Yesterday afternoon we caught the “Spring Dances” program at #LADanceProject. One piece by #JanieTaylor (which included music by the wonderful #CarolineShaw and #SoPercussion) and two by #BenjaminMillepied with music by #NicoMuhly. We were both just blown away by the entire program. Everything—choreography, music, the AMAZING dancers—was just stunningly good.
After Red Cat we were off to see the Spring Dances of Los Angeles Dance Project for a fantastic suite of dances then a great dinner at Berera. A perfect way to end the day. #ladanceproject #springdanceperformances

@wearethebeatfilm inspiration Slide 1 For a long time now, I have desired to make a film with movement as the main vehicle of communication. I took an experimental dance class @jazzo and it changed my life. It was amazing because for someone who has two left feet, I always thought I just didn’t know how to dance, and that is still unfortunately true. However, taking this class, I realized that it wasn’t about how pretty the dancing was, as much as it was about finding that inner freedom that unlocked an emotional vocabulary. Suddenly, I wanted to share this feeling with all Black men and boys. Experiencing this as a Black man is an experience I won’t soon forget. Slide 2 John Baloy When it came time to start pulling pictures, I was on the hunt for pics that would lean into our theme of Afrofuturism. When I discovered @johnbaloy’s work it was very clear that his work beautifully illustrated the words I’d written in the script. Slide 3 Black Male Mental Health and Uncle Daniel Back in 2009, my uncle was preventably murdered in front of his kids over a bike dispute. This shook me to my core in that I started to believe that I too would be killed. This belief took root, ultimately developing into PTSD and severe anxiety. As I have navigated my own mental health journey, I began to share my journey and developed a desire to help other Black men and boys who might be silently struggling find a way out. Slide 4 Intrinsic Value / Jewelry Adornment Another of the themes in WATB is the embracement of the innate intrinsic value in Black men and boys. An exciting way we plan on showing that is through the adornment of statement jewelry. My goal is to show that the jewelry is not only an outward expression of the inner gems we carry as Black men and boys but also pays homage to the motherland and shows the unique correlation that Black people share with all these sacred gems deep beneath the earth. @wearethebeatfilm is based on my uncle Daniel, and the unfortunate nightmarish phenomenon of Black rappers like Pop Smoke, Nipsey Hussle, XXXTentacion, and countless others dying young due to violence and in some cases death by suicide. I believe there is a direct correlation in the erosion of our mental health and the uptick in Black boys and men dying by suicide, which is what the aerial shots in the script represent: The subtle, yet overbearing omnipresent “monster antagonist,” that is society. In many ways, Daniel discovering - by way of his mentor - that he has intrinsic value and then deciding to dance in pure jubilation throughout the film, is a way of artistically addressing Black Male Mental Health. It’s a proclamation and affirmation for all Black men and boys to remember the intrinsic value that surges through us, and to express it by any means necessary. In physiology pain, stress, anger, sadness, and loneliness are emotions that if not properly excavated, can trap themselves in one’s body. This is why our protagonist, Daniel, finds a way to eventually express himself, first through his Body by way of Tai Chi, (a meditative healing martial arts) then, through the “letting go,” of his Mind by way of idiosyncratic dance movements, and finally through his Spirit by way of a spiritual experience where we get to witness him beam up to another galaxy. In essence, we observe and track Daniel physically form and express an emotional vocabulary through dance as he embarks on his mental health journey. This is Divine alchemy. He does what my Uncle Daniel was tragically unable to do, and what I and other Black men and boys are learning to do: Express ourselves.WATB has the potential to help close that gap. For this year’s avidly anticipated Spring Dances, L.A. Dance Project presents the world premiere of Janie Taylor’s Sleepwalker’s Encyclopedia and the Los Angeles premiere of Benjamin Millepied’s Me.You.We.They. Choreographed on Lorrin Brubaker, Jeremy Coachman, Courtney Conovan, Daphne Fernberger, David Adrian Freeland Jr., Shu Kinouchi, Peter Mazurowski, Audrey Sides, Hope Spears, Aidan Tyssee, and Nayomi Van Brunt, Taylor’s work is performed on a set designed by painter Ben Styer. Millepied’s Me.You.We.They premiered at the Philharmonie de Paris in March 2024. Danced to “One Speed, Many Shapes,” a new composition by Nico Mulhy, the work marks the seventh collaboration between the two artists. I performed “Nonlinear Groover” yesterday at @ladanceproject as a part of @welcometolace’s ABUNDANCE. This performance is a love letter to the underground, DIY, and community led scenes that transformed my life, paving the way for me to become the artist I am today. It features hard house beats, generative art, digital animatronics, psychedelic indigenous futurist imagery, songs of belonging, queer and trans rage, and celebratory respite. Sharing some more documentation from my performance in my stories as well as some documentation I was able to get of some of the other performances.
