I needed some inspiration today. I needed to be in ritual communion with art. For the past couple of months, my soul and my body have been moving in and out of dark places in and out of light spaces communing with the deep and unknown parts of who I am becoming . I spend a lot of time listening to people and holding space. I spend a lot of time observing people. And I spend a lot of time reflecting on the different ways in which people attempt to engage with each other in the world mostly because I seek to understand the world through the lens of human interaction. And I am coming to the conclusion that the ways in which were educated in the world, prepare us to be worker bees, but they do not teach us how to be in community. The ways we are conditioned force us to turn away from each other when we need more than ever to turn to each other in the spirit of community. Human beings, crave connection but run from each other. Human beings suffer from deep loneliness, yet push away genuine, and healthy people in their lives. Human beings are hurting deeply in the world yet cannot find it within themselves to express that. My heart hurts for the world tonight . I pray for the world tonight . I pray for all of those who are fighting battles that no one knows about, and that they can’t bring themselves to express or to ask for help. Revisiting a thought that occurs to me quite often; people in the music industry, who complain that they have always been shut out often times failed to heal themselves from that hurt. then when they do get opportunities, they simply perpetuate the same type of dysfunctional behaviors that they complain about it one point in their career. In the vocal wood shed this morning! Getting ready to embark on a different direction requires studying things that take us out of our comfort zone. Studying Hindustani music doesn’t mean that I am trying to become an Indian classical singer. What it does mean is that every time I introduce and work on things consistently over a period of time that are different from what I normally do, the possibility of introducing different colors into my musical palette are heightened/increased. Now the warning is that for those who are used to hearing you doing things one way they may actually rebel against you and say that you should sound the way you’ve always sounded . I love lots of different styles and music. Jazz is my first love. I love Latin music I love soul music I love world music I love symphonic music. I love hip-hop. Music is constantly changing. Some of those changes I love some of them I can’t stand. In order to make a living and to build a career, there are times where I do work that wouldn’t necessarily be my first choice in terms of creating. But gratefully, I have more moments where I absolutely love what’s happening in the creative space whether it’s the studio or the stage. But one thing for sure I’m always learning. And no matter how much work I do for others or to satisfy the market, I’ll always create music that I feel strong conviction for. on a sidenote, of my beloved mentors, Bob Ferrier an amazing guitar player and educator always plays with all these movements and gestures, and I think I probably also entertain people as much with my faces as what I’m playing! Every organ in the body has a specific frequency that it is supposed to vibrate at for maximum health and vitality and wellness. When the organs are exposed to frequencies that jar the organs out of alignment, when we are eating food that vibrate at low frequencies, they can pull the body into a state of dis-ease. We can restore our bodies to their required vibrational frequency in many ways. Entrainment theory teaches us that the stronger of two frequencies will pull the weaker frequency into alignment with it. I haven’t slept, and I wanted to finish this arrangement. I’ve been working on a series of short musical meditations/reflections called “Sonic Paintings” since last year. This one is called “Thinking of you”. Woodwinds, (piccolo, flute, oboe, bass clarinet, soprano and Tenor Sax) flugelhorn, piano, bass and drums. I may add strings, not sure yet. I’m contemplating deeply about the ways sound and silence work together to energize spaces for genuine healing to take place and for self awareness to be born. This is part of my practice to keep lazy habits away. Sometimes with the advent of technology, we slack on the skill sets that make us unique. Sometimes, in order to turn music around quickly for clients or projects, there isn’t sufficient time to chart things out. Sometimes we use notation software sometimes we he was our DAW. But I don’t care what anyone says, there is something to be said for maintaining the skill of being able to put pencil to paper. So I maintain this practice of writing out at least a page of music every day just to keep those chops up . An idea occurred to me as I was sketching this out just now.
