It’s always bittersweet for me when this Peony comes into bloom….after my Mom passed away in 2018, I dug up most of her beloved peonies when her house was sold the following year… I shared my Moms peonies with my daughters, sister, & sister-law….. Throwback to Easter time when we were putting eggs on our little hydrangea tree (it’s a family tradition going back 6 generations now!). These 3 children didn’t come easily into our lives and we have just as many babies in Heaven. I love Mother’s Day because it’s like having a half birthday of sorts (my birthday is in December, so I feel like it’s closer enough to count). My mom raised 8 of us, pretty much by herself. My dad was in and out of our lives and was very abusive. Usually, when he was physically abusive towards her, it was when she was protecting us. Childhood was freaking terrifying, and uncertain at times. But there were moments when I remember feeling safe. One of those times was right before bed. More times than not, no matter what was going on, she always managed to sing us to sleep. All 8 of us. When I spoke to her today, I asked her to sing me one of the songs. Of course she sang what she could remember. Cierrah and I enjoyed a gorgeous early fall day shooting, but the sun was so harsh that the exposures and haze were all over the place. For that reason, I never felt comfortable posting these photos. When I came up with the idea to post mothers I've worked with, it was a no brainer to finally share. Cierrah was already a mother to her first son when we shot, but shortly after this shoot she found out she was pregnant with TWINS!! 👶🏼👶🏼 How crazy is that?! I had an imperfect mother who spent her short time here being the most loving human person of all time. She was a Mom, capital M, who loved me so much and who loved my sister so much and who opened her heart to her stepson and loved him so much. I had the mom our friend groups loved, Mrs McDowell. She was a hoot and a holler and she was so adorably teenager-y when she wore her hair up in a pony and listened to her records. She was the very kindest, most giving, most wrapped up in their lives grandma. She could get so angry when someone implied she was getting old and it always made my sister and I crack up. She cried as much as me and was fiercely loyal. She wrote beautiful long form letters by hand. She was the best Avon Lady on the block and everyone’s favorite Sunday School Teacher, Pageantry Mom, and Campfire Girls Leader. She had amazing taste in music and movies. She was a reader and helped me fall in love with books. She was self-sacrificial and stubborn in equal parts. She was smart and interesting. She told great stories about growing up a Miller Girl in South Omaha, Nebraska. She loved when people told her she looked like Cher or Debra Winger. She was obsessed with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson but also with James Taylor, Carly Simon, Bread, Hall & Oates, Chicago, Journey, and Boz Scaggs. She drove, for a time, an old school Firebird Transam. She also loved the traditional. She made a mean apple peach pie and we loved when she’d make pie crust cinnamon rolls with the crust scraps. She loved very holiday and made them all special. She was the best and I miss her today like I lost her just yesterday, I love Mother’s Day even more now that she’s gone. Because I love the days I get to make space to think about her more and remember what it was to be a McDowell girl raised by a Miller girl and how I wouldn’t want, even with all of the incredibly hard stuff, anyone else’s life.
