Photo Commentary: The sandworms in Frank Herbert’s Dune create spice Melange on the Planet Arrakis -a critical component for space-faring. Long story short, the universe cannot function without the existence of the great worms. Although I am not very well versed in Dune lore, it’s hard not to associate worm like creatures with the sandworms in the Dune universe, or Shai-hulud as the Fremen calls it. When I approached this Graeffe’s Sea Cucumber, it sort of reared its head up. At first I thought I was lucky enough to catch one releasing its gamet in a spawning event (the money shot). Then I thought there is a chance the display was a threat-response, and it might desiccate itself - as sea cucumbers are known to do when under stress, so I slightly backed away. But it was neither, and when it started to lower its head down, I took the shot. Sea cucumbers play a crucial role in our oceans. They filter out organic matter and poop out clean sand, effectively cleaning the seafloor and preventing algae blooms that radically alter the water composition, thus keeping the reefs healthy. And the more we learn about the underwater world, the more we understand that reef health is critical to the health of everything else. Graeffe’s Sea Cucumber (Pearsonothuria graeffei), these sea cucumbers are quite common in tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean. Juveniles are brightly coloured to mimic the toxicity of sea slugs.
