On May 8th, 2024, Goalkeepers South Africa gathered for a Planning Event at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation offices in Johannesburg. This hybrid gathering marked a significant stride in our mission to build a cohesive, impactful community dedicated to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in South Africa. Our objectives were clear: foster meaningful networking among members, provide updates on community progress, gather valuable insights on planned activities, and brainstorm innovative ways to honor #SDG champions. #SDG on Thursday let's talk about Goal 2: Zero Hunger. You'll find a lot of information about the goal in the slides but I'd like to add a personal element. The Zero Hunger goal is perhaps the one that I have the hardest time figuring in, I have never known hunger. I am a privileged person, I live in a wealthy country, I live in a context where I often find myself using the expression "I ate too much" I could afford the "luxury" of wasting food. This condition, the world I live in, the country I live in, are conditions that I did not deserve, they do not depend on my efforts, it is something that happened to me. When you read the data in the slides think about this, today's goal and the zero poverty goal we were talking about last weeks depend a lot on facts you cannot control, on conditions beyond your will. They are the flip of a coin. The city of NY has been buzzing in the last couple of weeks; first it was #newyorkfashionweek2019 and this week the #unitednationgeneralassembly.
