Was in Chinatown to run errands, Capt'n Hookk asked if we're having lunch at Lai Foong. Straight away replied him No cos I want to go Tang City Food Court 😅. Very determined to try this old school Sam Kan Chong Pork Ball Noodles that Sifu @andytwc had recommended. He mentioned that his late dad said deep fried pork intestine were served with this type of noodles long long ago. Forgot to ask my parents about this. So we ordered 2 bowls (RM25) with intestine added. First off, soup is peppery & didn't hit with MSG sweetness. Dry style noodles hv the right balance of saltiness with slight hint of sweetness. Rectangular pork balls of correct texture of not overly bouncy. The siu cheung, wahhhh, not mushy kind but only gave one slice 😔. It was thickish though. The crunch from the deep fried intestine is really something. Totally unexpected but it's a nice texture to go with the noodles. Will I eat this again? Definitely a yes!!! If only they were served in proper 8 corners cockerel bowls 😆 then it would hv been 10/10! Meet the team behind Forgotten Greens! __ Shruti Tharayil (@shrutitharayil ) is the founder of Forgotten Greens, an initiative that works on reviving the fast disappearing traditions of consuming uncultivated greens. She is a freelance writer and educator. Shruti has a penchant for weaving stories at the intersection of biodiversity, caste and food systems. Her world-view is shaped most significantly by her experiences of her journeys with the Indigenous, Dalit, and pastoral communities across Southern India, which has strengthened her narratives and collaborative work. In the beginning of 2024, she did a solo cycle yatra across South India, cycling 700 kms across 3 states, documenting uncultivated greens from different communities and lesser-known food stories. Shruti spends most of her time learning and day dreaming about plants and can be often found squatting on roadsides foraging or clicking pictures of them. __ Mahika Mor (@backpackinguides ) manages Forgotten Greens’s social media. She recently finished her post graduation and is taking a year off from academia before starting her PhD. Her research interests include popular literature, food studies, modern mythology, and feminist literary criticism. I remember, just about a year ago, when new flavors would come with some sort of pomp and circumstance and now, they seem to quietly find their way into the freezer section without even the faintest of a toot toot. I found just a couple of reviews on the Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake, they were meh. I found a single Reddit thread and one @tiktok review on the Ice Cream Cake flavor (apparently a @wholefoods exclusive), described a birthday cake flavor with dark chocolate cream filled cookies and a thick layer of blue frosting on the top. Reviews were expectedly mixed. I'd like to encourage Van Leeuwen to put out those small taster tubs like their friends, B and J, I definitely grabbed several of those before I invested in the full pint. 8.5/10 - CUT by Wolfgang Puck, Bahrain. Some of the yummiest comfort food I’ve had in a while. The grilled cheese with caviar was delish, as well as the Philly cheesesteak sandwich 🤤 the confit duck cones were light and moorish. The dishes were a tad too greasy for my liking, and wine is served in what can only be described as, as a “goblet”. Great service, and shoutout to my fav waiter, Bruce.

4/10 - Roka, Bahrain. Meh, mediocre at best. Such a shame. I’ve had wonderful experiences at Roka in London etc but this one just doesn’t cut the mustard. Had a tuna tartare that tasted just a bit too fishy (abnormally so) and most of the food was just quite bland and boring. The outdoor rooftop terrace is lovely, but that’s about it. Also asked about 3 times for extra wasabi and it never replied. I think it’s just a place where people come to hangout as there isn’t anywhere else really to go.

This arguably the BEST Shakshuka Egg I had in my life (and trust me I had quite a bit). You know how when you’re exhausted and tired- you just want to eat something for sustenance and crash to bed and I choose shakshuka because it wasn’t going to be too heavy. I did not expect all my senses and taste bud to come to life! It just exploded on my palate- that rich tomato sauce, the hint of garlic, onion and all the well balanced spices! The egg was poached to my liking- a perfect pair of texture and taste. It was hearty meal and I had to stop myself from ordering it again! I don’t have the right words to explain how amazing it was and it just melted in my mouth. After having that meal- I was so “awake”, energized and inspired. Good food really does feed your soul. So if you’re at Store Street (central London) - please please drop by @honeyandco and order this! Have you ever had PUMPKIN AND BLUE CHEESE pizza before? It’s my time trying pizza at @lapizzaiolasg with pumpkin puree, mozzarella, gorgonzola, and parma ham slices ($26.90)! And I loved it. I think it’s an acquired taste but honestly the blue cheese wasn’t very overpowering. It added this salty and crumbly element to the pizza. We started the meal with Gamberetti e Bianchetti Fritti ($20.90) which is deep-fried whitebait and baby prawns. The batter was light and delicate, without oily aftertaste. Also, it’s pleasantly salted, so it was nice to munch on. Besides the pizza, we ordered Risotto ai Gameri, Zucchini e Limone ($24.90), which came with prawns and zucchini, cooked in lemon-zested prawn bisque. Very yummy umami flavour. Concluded the meal with creme brûlée, which mum polished off very quickly before telling me she’s usually not a fan. We were supposed to share and I ended up eating a third.
