9 Mental Models that Instantly Improve Your Decision-Making: 1. First Principle Thinking - Rethink the problem from the ground up. Separate the underlying facts from assumptions made based on them. 2. Second-Order Thinking - Instead of thinking about the immediate consequences, think about the second-level consequences. 3. Inversion - Look at the problem at hand from the endpoint instead of the starting point. Don’t ask: “What do I need to do?” Ask: “What must I avoid?” 4. Opportunity Costs - Think about the costs that arise because you decide in favor of one option and thus against every other option. 5. Randomness - Keep in mind that there aren’t always cause-effect relationships. Lots of stuff is random. 6. Leverage - “Give me a lever long enough and I shall move the world.” - Archimedes 7. I wasn’t sure what to title this picture of the Appalachian trail, other than “my why.” Getting debt free is a huge life altering goal for me… I could have a million reasons why it is important. But if you ask me what I WANT to do, well for starters I want to hike one of America’s long trails, specifically the Appalachian or Pacific Crest trail. It doesn’t mean that ten years later it’s still the right goal for me or anything. Maybe at this point it’s purely out of spite that I’m gonna do what I said I was going to! I just think life shouldn’t be so hard that I can’t do it. Everyday when I go to work I haul myself through the problems and challenges like I’m being carried by an invisible fist. I’m highly motivated to push through my debts and bills to save money for this trail. Right now things feel like I’ll never reach my goal. Not before my health goes, or I get too old. I’m on the track anyways. And it’s why I’m going to cook my lunch for tomorrow even though I’m tired. I know that this motivation is strong but I also know it wanes sometimes and I am left feeling like everything is impossible. A real kick in the pants! Anyhoo. I’m going to keep trying to saving money, not spending it, and getting by. It’s the summer of saving, but we will get back to debt payoff soon. When saving money for the long run, there are 2 paths that most people take. . The first path is to put your savings in a high-interest savings account. Yuni chose this route and put all of her money in a savings account with an interest rate of 1.5% (which is higher than most). . The second path is to put your savings in low-risk investments. Robyn spent some time learning about investing on YouTube and by reading a couple of books. She puts all of her savings in a self-investing account and every month she uses the money to buy some very low-risk index funds or ETFs. This takes her about 5 minutes, and her investments grow on average 8% per year. . ➕ Two months ago, the company announced the amount of profit-sharing everyone will get for 2023 and it just reached my pension scheme last week. As I only worked half a year last year, I got a portion of that but I am still grateful to get almost 2 000€ as a bonus. 💍 In France, there are several options available when it comes to profit-sharing. The simplest solution is to get it paid but it can be highly taxed, depending on your band, which for the majority of people corresponds to 30%. That means that on 2 200€ gross, only 1 540€ will reach your account. Another option, if you do not need money right now, is to get it invested in your pension scheme with ETFs where it gets only taxed at 9.7%. That is the option I personally selected to profit from the tax exemption. ⏬ The only downside is that this amount is blocked until retirement, or particular scenarios (principal residence purchase, long-term illness, prolonged unemployment…). Alright I’m not gonna lie, I’ve done all of these in the past but they’re now things I won’t spend my money on anymore 🙅🏻♀️! Lesson learnt ✨ 1. Uber eats is so easy, especially when they deliver it straight to your door but the cost of the meals on the app are few $’s more than if you were to go into the shop. On top of that there are delivery fees too! It just all adds up overtime. 2. Snacks from the gas station are a fat no from me! I wanted an ice cream during my night shift last night and checked the price. My mouth dropped! It was $5 for a Rocky Road stick ice cream. It just wasn’t worth it 😩. 3. I always carry around my debit card with me to avoid paying surcharges. Why be lazy and tap & go when you can save a few dollars by using your debit card? Ps. Yes… I know the card in the pic is a credit card 😂. 4. Parking tickets are so darn expensive and half the time the car parks aren’t even that secure… so why bother?! $10 is my cap and I think even that is so much just to park your car. 5. Sparkling water is a trap. It’s funny as restaurants always ask if you want sparkling but never tell you how much it will cost. Here are six things I don’t regret splurging on this year! ✨ 1. I am OBSESSED with my kindle. I love the fact I can take my kindle everywhere and it saves space in my bag and at home. I can purchase almost any book I want whenever, usually for cheap too as e-books are cheaper than paper books. 2. My Kodak Pixpro FZ55 is my bestie! 😍 I love the quality and it just makes your photos look that much better! It’s perfect for taking to events and catch ups cause with the flash, it makes you look bomb! 3. I needed a new bag for work as I sold my old ones and I’m loving my new Lulu tote. It has a water repellent fabric and super spacious. 4. My old NB shoes broke so had to get new ones! I got them in white cause I don’t actually have white running shoes and they’re still cute for casual wear. I’ll definitely be making lots of use of them. 5. I 🩷 my car so much because it’s got a modern and sleek design, comes with cool features, and a mini SUV. I appreciate that the car is fuel efficient, like I can put in $80 and not have to fill up for two weeks even though I’ve been driving it everyday. ✨ 6. My drink bottle is elite! I had to sell my Frank Green and replaced it with a Lulu because of the size. 1L are great but it doesn’t fit in the work car and I’m on the road 70% of the time so it’s important I have a bottle that I can bring with me all the time. I’ve spent a lot this year so from May onwards I’m going to look into spending a lot less and budgeting more. It’s my birthday month ✨🪩! In all honesty this year I didn’t really want to do anything for my birthday, mostly because I’ve been so busy but I realised I’m only gonna be 27 once 😂. Another month done! We’re now going into 1/3 into the year 👀. This month has been a wild month for me. I started my new dream job which I LOVE. It was an incredible first day. Everyday, work for me is different and I love that! 🤍✨ I also managed to stick to my running plan, launch my e-books for me, save over $1,000 for my emergency fund so I am happy with my overall achievements this month. It takes me a while to focus on a book (especially with ADHD) and so yup… still not done reading 😂 but I am just over halfway through. I haven’t done this kinda post in a very long time 😅 but this is my usual monthly budget right now. After reflecting on this graph, I’m hoping to lower my groceries by meal prepping more and dining out way less! I’m currently teaching myself how to be more disciplined with eating the same food often… With my petrol and travel, I’m actually able to save a lot more than I used to since I’ve moved houses as I now live basically less than a 10 minute drive to work. Ok I know I’ve like re-uploaded this post twice but I just didn’t like the way it sat on my gram so changed the design up completely 😂. The past month, my emergency fund got hit pretty hard! It was definitely sad seeing all the hard work go away right before my eyes 🥲 but the good thing is the fact I had one so I didn’t need to touch my actual savings at all. It’s a new year which means new goals! Ok I’m aware I am a month late but I’ve been in college so had to put my life on pause and so for me, my year really starts in February 😅. This year I’m all about cutting down the things I own and focusing on what I can do to build my finances while creating a better life for me. ✨ A minimalism lifestyle is when you live with fewer possessions, focusing only on the things you need. I’m also all about buying quality and being able to use/wear the item repeatedly for a long time rather than buying a new item of the same kind over and over again within short periods… hence the saying “quality of quantity” 😏. As much as I love paper books, I do want to start using a kindle and buying digital books to save space. It’ll also be easier for me to carry it around! The last two months, I’ve been focusing mostly on building my savings and I’ve been able to save $5K in 2 months because of that. This post shares some things I did to make sure that I was able to accomplish my $20K challenge that I set up for myself. 1. I cancelled all unused subscriptions, even the B&M Stan Store because I knew I wouldn’t be able to focus on it while in college. It was a hard decision to make but I will be back properly when I graduate in 2 months ok 🥹🫶🏼 2. Stopped eating out and getting takeaways as often as I did! This helped me save significantly as it was my worst spending habits. 3. As soon as I got paid, I sent a chunk of money to my savings account to avoid myself from digging into it! Once I put money into my savings account, I can’t take it out due to it being in a locked term so I like to do it first thing once I see my pay come into my account. 4. Stopped looking at my fave stores online to prevent any temptations 😂 5. Sold a bunch of things I no longer used or needed, or donated them 🩷 6. Budget my money strictly before I got paid and stuck to it! Hey pals 🫶🏼✨! Just thought I’d do a wee update post of my life since I’ve been SO inactive since I’ve arrived at college to train for my dream job. College so far has been crazy! I’ve met awesome people, made good friends and been studying basically 24/7. Physically I haven’t been that active since I’ve gotten here, and I also sprained my ankle in the second week 🫠😂… I’m such a worry lol! But it’s being medically cleared hopefully in a week so I can do my fitness test in college. My routine basically consists of eating carby food (not by choice, it’s just what they serve here), and studying. There is literally SO much study to do everyday because we learn like 10-30 pages of info on the daily. I do get some fitness in during the day at some of my classes, otherwise I sometimes run or gym after 5PM when class finishes, or on weekends. I didn’t include that in the post though because it’s so inconsistent. While I’m training here, I got a pay cut but since I was able to reduce as many expenses as I could before moving here to the new city, I only need to pay for my phone bill, Spotify, Apple storage, and insurance. Accomodation + food at the college which is VERY cheap! And even better… a win for me is that I don’t need to make food and do dishes everyday too. The last two weeks have been INSANE in a good way! I’ve done so many things out of my comfort zone and saved so much money… I feel super excited for what’s to come 🥹. This month, I didn’t end up running as much as I wished as I’ve ended up gymming more than running (not by choice… the weather has been horrible here) 🌧️. At college, I spoke in front of like 60 people and even though it was short, that was massive for me and I’m proud of myself for at least doing that. I won’t be posting as often while I’m in training/college pursuing my dreams because of the study load and no wifi in the dorms, but whenever I have breaks I’ll definitely spend time spitting yarns on this page and posting content. It’s so easy to slack off and feel unmotivated sometimes. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good lazy day every now and then but it’s important to not get too comfortable with them. Here are six things I do to keep myself in check ✅ so that I stay on top of my game. 1. I use Notion everyday and created a to do list on it where I make sure I tick off everything I’ve planned for the day. If I’m unable to, then I’ll drag the task to the next day or another day in the week that I can do. 2. I can’t function if I’m dehydrated so I make sure to drink as much water I can. 3. If my skin is feeling dry and gross, my productivity level is LOW. I feel myself the most when I’m moisturised with facial and body lotion 😂… surely I’m not the only one? 4. When I’m exercising or working on a task, I always put my phone on dnd. My focus then becomes solely on whatever I’m doing and the chances of me getting what I need to get done is higher. 5. Getting any form of exercise is crucial to me if I want to be productive. Even doing something simple as push ups or stretching. 6. I always set an achievable goal for the day, and it can be super simple such as “do all my laundry” or “clean my wardrobe”. The finance was set for me to pay back the car over a 6 year period, which meant that I would’ve had to pay thousands in interest if I had stuck with the given timeframe. I feel like Emily in Paris but the not so glam version since I’ll be training for my dream job and not in high fashion clothes away in Europe! However, I’m still happy with this option too 😆. For the first time, I’ll be moving away from Auckland alone to live in a different city… okay it’s for four months only but still a big deal for me! And it is cheating a little because I do get to come home a few times but for the most of it, I’ll be away! ✨ I’m lucky because I get super cheap rent and meals while at college and so I’ll be saving money while there since I’m moving out of my current place and storing my furniture at my mum’s. When I return from college, I’ll have to find a new place but that’s for the future. Hey friends! I am sick… AGAIN! This time with a cold and achy head plus a chest infection 😪. I had to take unpaid sick leave today and was so close to going into work but my head was pounding. I ended up sleeping for most of the day 😅. I’ve got annual leave tomorrow so these are the things I’ve been and will be doing while sick. 🤧 • l think I slept for a total of 18 hours in the last 24 hours… that’s wild 😂. And I will continue to sleep more. 😴 • Yesterday, I felt myself getting run down so I went grocery shopping and meal prepped. I even got a lemon, ginger and honey syrup because I had a feeling I’d get worse today. Today, instead of buying food because I didn’t have the energy to cook, I got to enjoy the meals I made. • I get Netflix for free as I use my sister’s which I’m very grateful for 💕🥺 • I spent some time creating my budget for next month, and because my financial situation will be looking a little different in a few weeks, I’ve been planning for the change. • Keeping myself hydrated while sick is a must so I’ve been drinking more water than usual and sipping on tea. • More bed time means more cuddle time with Piper & Jupiter 🥺. And another month is done and dusted! 👏🏼 Yes, I’m reposting my goals review for three reasons. 1) Because I made it pink and pretty 😂, 2) I thought my $20K challenge deserved its own page, 3) I wanted to reflect on how many free/low-cost things I did this month and share it with you. This month was good. Super productive but I also had my lazy days. However, I’m feeling a little burnt out so in August, I’m going to chill out more and learn to enjoy each day again. Going back to the first page, all the pinks are the goals I’ve achieved. The grey is a goal that didn’t become relevant to me anymore because when I set it, I thought I’d have my final fitness test (I needed to complete two for my dream job) more towards the end of July but it was at the start! Since the test, I focused more on endurance running instead. This month, my $10K term deposit also matured so I put it towards my $20K challenge which is how I was able to build the fund fast. Now I’ll be earning higher interest income so I’m stoked as the fund is in a notice saver account. Every month, I always make sure I do 6 things. This is what they are. 🤍 I take myself out to a nice cafe once a month. I’ll drink a yummy smoothie or hot drink, eat delicious food and work on content along with life admin things. 🤍 I at least make sure I have a lazy day once. This means doing nothing productive and living the same lifestyle as my cats for one day 😂. I don’t even cook… I eat my meals I’ve already prepared the day before or get takeaways. It feels AMAZING. 🤍 I used to clean my car multiple times a month but I’ve cut down to only once. It just makes me feel happy getting into a clean car, especially because I drive a lot. 🤍 Managing my finances every month is crucial for me. Making sure I achieve my monthly goals and budget efficiently is an absolute month! And I enjoy it too. 🤍 Making sure my room is super tidy is a definite. I already do some of these, but I really want to push for eating out less! It’s been my worst habit recently, especially with being a shift worker and having a busy schedule 😪. I’m going to focus on eating at home more, finding my love for cooking again, trying new dishes and snacking less. I’m also gonna make it a thing if I’m catching up with a friend, instead of eating out, I will replace it with a coffee date instead so I can save around $20-30! ☕️ Oh, and if I do go out for food, I’m gonna make it a thing that I will try a dish I haven’t tried before.
