The Dream Syndicate “Sketches For The Days Of Wine And Roses”, 2024 The Dream Syndicate "The Day Before Wine And Roses", 2013 WARNING: GRUMPY OLD MAN TEXT AHEAD... The first track on “Sketches For The Days Of Wine And Roses” is a rehearsal version of “Too Little, Too Late” and the chorus goes like: “I'm not gonna warn you It's gone too far for that I'm not gonna warn you” But I will be happy to warn you! I have been a Dream Syndicate fan since I brought “The Days of…” back in 1984 and I have followed the band and Mr. Wynn ever since. But in my opinion, this RSD release reveals NOTHING about the band or the process of making the fantastic “Days of…” album. By calling it “Sketches For..” is a joke , this is bunch of rehearsals tapes with a band trying to find themselves and which later became one of my most precious bands on the so called Paisley scene, but to my ears this has nothing to do with any sketches of anything… To me this is all what RSD is NOT about and I do not understand why there wasn't a grown up music love present at the office of Fire Records (@fire_records) that raised an eyebrow and said: Are we sure about this one? Next one up is “The Day Before Wine and Roses” released on BANG! Records from Spain. Nice cover, double album, and everything. The content is a little more interesting. Lots of communication from Wynn between him and the audience in this KPFK FM recording. The sound is like a bootleg, and it gives you a raw and interesting peak into this fantastic band. Do I recommend any of these releases? Well, if you are a die-hard fan or a grumpy old man like me, and (apparently?) want everything with the band this is the only reason to justify the purchase of these two "low calories" releases. Here is my Record Store Day 2024 post. I had to wait for some of it to get here in the mail because I’m not standing in some ridiculous line for the honor of handing someone my hard-earned cash. At this point in my life, if you want my money, you had better make it real easy for me to give it to you. After grabbing a pizza, we went to the local shop long after the line of Swifties had left victorious or broken-hearted I figured I would be able to find most of what I was looking for, and I was right. How there were still so many copies of Faces and Gene Clark records left in the racks is a sad commentary on our times. Anyway, here’s what I got:.. More live, Thin Lizzy; did I need it? The answer is yes! There were two records I wanted the most, and this Malfunkshun record was one of them, one of the first grunge bands, but these guys had some cock rock/arena rock leanings. The thought of Andrew Wood in full-face make-up and steinberger bass singing about making sweet love while opening for bands like Fang and the Circle Jerks does my heart good. Live Faces on the BBC, like Lizzy, you can’t go wrong with this band. It’s always a party on a platter. Spotlight Kid is one of my favorite Beefheart records, and this comes with a disc of extras, so I’m in. Gene Clark’s voice gets me every time. The guy was an amazing songwriter, and this is a double of “No Other” outtakes. In other words, a no-brainer. This is the second of my most-wanted RSD records. Los Hermanos Cosmico are Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes and @brent_rademaker of Beachwood Sparks, live at Pappy and Harriet’s. A triple album of greatness! Double album of Dean and Britta, playing some smooth, velvety tunes. Perfect late-night or early-morning music. Yes, I like Yes. Got a problem with it? I need to get my prog on now and then. So lovely to see @cultartist and @iamjasonvictor play the Betsey Trotwood yesterday, having missed their big 'Fire at 40' gig with @howegelb and friends. Also watched the compelling 'How Did We Find Ourselves Here' film about the Dream Syndicate, made by Emiel Spoelder. It features some footage from Sun Station Vadsø, she says proudly. It's a great view into the band's history and how the music transmuted over time and personnel. Recommended.
