In this quote, A. W. Tozer (1897–1963), addresses the common skeptical question, ‘Where did God come from?’. Or as it is often put, ‘If God created everything, who created God?’ But the question is illogical, since only created things need creators, and God is not a created thing. Rather, God—by definition—has no origin. If He did, He would not be God! This thought is both difficult to comprehend, and at the same time inescapably logical. Tozer goes on to say: “The human mind, being created, has an understandable uneasiness about the Uncreated. … We tend to be disquieted by the thought of One who does not account to us for His being, who is responsible to no one, who is self-existent, self-dependent and self-sufficient. “Philosophy and science … are dedicated to the task of accounting for things and are impatient with anything that refuses to give an account of itself. The philosopher and the scientist will admit that there is much that they do not know; but that is quite another thing from admitting that there is something which they can never know, which indeed they have no technique for discovering. “To admit that there is One who lies beyond us, who exists outside of all our categories, who will not be dismissed with a name, who will not appear before the bar of our reason, nor submit to our curious inquiries: this requires a great deal of humility, more than most of us possess, so we save face by thinking God down to our level …” Yet God is not a creature like us. He is GOD—the uncreated Creator, the First Cause to which all of the rest of the universe logically points. It is understandable that use of the word ‘replenish’ in Genesis 1:28 (in the well-known and respected KJV Bible) would cause some people to think that God was telling Adam and Eve to ‘REfill’ the Earth with descendants—since that’s what ‘replenish’ invariably means these days. But, as this post explains, the meaning of ‘replenish’ has changed over the last few hundred years since the KJV was published. Most importantly, the underlying Hebrew text uses a word that clearly means ‘fill’—not ‘refill’. Now something extra for those of you who are history / language buffs: 🙂 While 'replenish' was a suitable word choice when the KJV was published, even then most translations used the word ‘fill’. These included: • Tyndale Bible (1526) – ‘fyll’ • Coverdale Bible (1535) – ‘fyll’ • Matthew’s Bible (1537) – ‘fyl’ • Geneva Bible (1587) – ‘fill’ Those that used ‘replenish’ were: • The Great Bible (1539) • Bishops’ Bible (1568) • King James Bible (1611) There is, in fact, a clear connection between the three: When the King James Bible was commissioned, its translators were instructed to use the Bishops’ Bible as a guide (with reference to others, of course). The Bishops’ Bible, in turn, used the Great Bible as its guide. So, it appears that the word ‘replenish’ in Genesis 1:28 was first used in the Great Bible, then from there carried over to the Bishops’ Bible, and from there to the King James Bible. It has, in turn, been used in several Bibles that have been based on the KJV—such as the ASV and ERV—while nearly all other English Bibles (before and since) have used the word ‘fill’. We need more scientists who are Christian. In a world where the lines between faith and science seem starkly drawn, it’s essential to remember that these two fields aren’t enemies but allies in uncovering the mysteries of our universe. Many believe that studying science might diminish our faith, but history and logic show us that it often deepens our understanding of the divine. Great minds like Sir Isaac Newton, who formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation, saw his work as uncovering the orderly and majestic system that God set into motion. In modern times, Francis Collins, leader of the Human Genome Project and a committed Christian, has spoken extensively about how his scientific work enhances his faith. Both perspectives argue that the complexity and beauty of the scientific world celebrate divine creation, not negate it. Consider the laws of thermodynamics, such as entropy, which states that all things move towards disorder. Rather than contradicting the creation, this supports the notion of a universe that, without divine intervention, tends to chaos rather than order. Science shows us a universe finely tuned for life but inherently unable to sustain perfect order on its own, suggesting the necessity of a Creator’s guiding hand. Moreover, the progression from single-cell organisms to complex beings poses significant questions. The absence of intermediary two-cell or three-cell organisms in nature as we observe today hints at a sophisticated design rather than random evolution. This complexity points to a higher intelligence behind life’s design. Our faith is enriched, not threatened, by scientific inquiry. As we delve deeper into the physical laws that govern our cosmos, we peer into the mind of the Creator, finding not conflict but confirmation. Why the hippo’s tail is an epic fail … … when referring to Job 40 Here is the full description of Behemoth, as related by God in Job 40:15–24: “Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like cattle. Look at the strength of his back and the power in the muscles of his belly. He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together. His bones are bronze tubes; his limbs are like iron rods. He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. The hills yield food for him, while all sorts of wild animals play there. He lies under the lotus plants, hiding in the protection of marshy reeds. Lotus plants cover him with their shade; the willows by the brook surround him. Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains confident, even if the Jordan surges up to his mouth. Can anyone capture him while he looks on, or pierce his nose with snares?” Now consider the following description of a type of sauropod dinosaur called ‘Dreadnoughtus schrani’ (the description comes from the lead discoverer of an exceptionally complete skeleton of the dinosaur): “So, everything about this dinosaur is giant. The femur [the longest, thickest leg bone] is six feet tall. … The tailbones are gargantuan with huge muscle scars that show us that it essentially had a weaponized tail that was 30 feet long. … this incredibly large and muscled individual that would have feared nothing in its landscape … And this is an incredibly bulky, massively muscled tail—everything about this speaks to its power.” Yes, I think we may have found a match for Behemoth! 🙂 P.S.
