🌿 It's time to prune your Type 2 and Type 3 Clematis! 🌸Type 2 Clematis flower on last year's growth in early May-June and may repeat in late summer. ✂️Simply cut back lightly to a strong bud and thin if needed. 🌸 Type 3 Clematis flower in late summer on new growth made in that season. These varieties, including Clematis viticella, C. tangutica and C. texensis, produce new growth from the base each year. Pruning encourages new growth and promotes a healthy, vibrant plant. If you don't prune them hard, all the flowers next summer will be at the top with very few at the bottom and there will be a mass of tangled growth. ✂️Use sharp, clean secateurs. ✂️Cut all the stems back to just above a healthy bud, 15 to 30cm above the soil (as shown in image below). 🌸Type 1 Clematis flower in winter or spring and are often evergreen. They require little pruning except occasional thinning and should be pruned after the frosts in mid-late spring. 🌿 #ClematisCare #GardeningTips #PruningSeason 🌼🌱

Clematis are divided into distinct pruning groups, each with different requirements. It’s important to know your group to properly care for your #clematis. Group #1: This group bears flowers on stems produced the previous season. Only remove the dead or weak stems after flowering. Group #2: These plants produce 2 flushes of blooms. Prune back old flower shoots to encourage rebloom. No pruning required except to shape the plant. Group #3: This group bears flowers on new growth yearly. All old growth must be removed completely in February - March before new growth begins. Prune hard 3-4" above the crown of the plant. #knowyourgroup #pruning #newbie #clematiscare #localexperts #shoplocal

Plant name: Sweet autumn clematis 🌼 . . ✔️ Perennial flowering vine. ✔️Blooming time: Summer to fall. ✔️Requires direct sunlight. ✔️If growing in a pot, feed them once in a month. (We use cowdung compost) ✔️Water when the top soil becomes dry. ✔️Prune them after flowering finishes in the late fall. ✔️If growing in a pot then choose a large pot. ✔️They will want to climb, so installing a support in or near the pot is highly recommended. . . Clematis ‘Blue Angel’ covered with pale blue flowers this year after pruning in late winter, organic feed and a couple of inches of fresh compost in spring, and occasional weak tomato feed solution in early summer. #containergardening #clematiscare #inapot #clematis #blueangel #mygarden

Clematis ‘Nubia’ (rather surprisingly Group 3) was planted just last year to tumble down a wall and it is beginning to do so rather gracefully. In early spring it will be cut back to about 6” from the base to a pair of buds, fed and mulched (mulched around it rather than over its crown). Its fabulous red I first saw at Chelsea in 2018. #clematisnubia #clematiscare #clematispruning #group3clematis #redclematis #strongred #redclimber

Clematis ‘Wedding Day’ romping away at the top of a tripod - it is such a very pretty one with its green streak on the petals. It will reflower in September if I tend to it kindly. The strength of its stems have always enthralled me. We are having an arbour made and we are using these stems as the model for its decoration. (It will be a while yet!) It is a Group 2 clematis so in early March we tidied up last year’s abundant growth removing a lot of damaged stems so that there was a good sense of tidiness about it but it was still more or less at the top of its stand - just less congested. Then it got fed and mulched and was left to its own devices. I give lots of advice on clematis in my book The Apprehensive Gardener - advice that was led by the wonderful Thorncroft Clematis nursery who should be exhibiting at Chelsea this very day. There is lots of other white in the bed - Crambe coridfolia and Eremurus himalaicus all looking well. #clematisweddingday #clematis #clematiscare #thorncroftnursery #clematispruning #grouptwoclematis #theapprehensivegardenerbook #gardeningadvice #pimpernelpress #strongstems
