Here’s another faculty highlight to brighten this rainy day! Today we are thrilled to announce that Jim Viera will be returning this summer to teach MT Dance and Repertoire. Jim Viera joined the Conservatory in 1982 and is an associate professor of dance, specializing in modern dance technique and jazzdance technique. In addition to teaching at Boston Conservatory, Viera has been on the faculty of the Harvard-Radcliffe Dance Program, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and the Jeannette Neill Dance Studio, where he was founder and artistic director of Boston Youth Moves, a not-for-profit dance program for teens. Viera has taught as a guest instructor or choreographed works at Wheaton College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Harvard Summer Dance Festival, the Boston Summer Dance Festival, and the School at Jacob’s Pillow. As a choreographer for ACE Entertainment, Viera has staged opening numbers for benefits featuring Rita Moreno, Gregory Hines, Grace Jones, and Harry Connick Jr. He has choreographed commercials for Digital Equipment Corporation and the National Endowment for the Arts and staged live industrials for Intellution, Champion Sportswear, Pioneer Investments, PUMA, Jordan’s Furniture, EMC Corporation, and the New England Aquarium. As director of Boston Youth Moves, he has choreographed tributes to honored guests Chita Rivera, Mitzi Gaynor and Donald McKayle for the organization’s annual fundraisers. Viera studied dance at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst under the direction of Richard Jones and holds four certificates of pedagogy in Lester Horton Technique from the Alvin Ailey Extension program in New York. As a performer, Viera has danced with the Danny Sloan Dance Company, Jazzdance: The Danny Buraczeski Dance Company, and Marcus Schulkind Dance Company. He has performed the works of Lynn Simonson, Thom Molinaro, Sara Yarborough, and Miguel Lopez, with whom he collaborated on the solo CRAWLSPACE, which was later featured on tour with the Joyce Trisler Danscompany. #bostonconservatory #bocomtdi #dance
Happy Wednesday! We’re so excited to introduce more of our amazing faculty for this year’s intensive. Today we are featuring the incredible Rachel Catanzariti who will be returning this summer to teach Ballet. Rachel Catanzariti joined Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2017 as Assistant Professor of Theater, specializing in Ballet. Catanzariti trained with Harvey Hysell and Vincenzo Celli in the Cecchetti technique, and with Natalia Krassovska in the Vaganova technique, and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and the San Francisco Ballet School. During her international career as a member of the New Orleans Ballet, Ballet Mississippi, Cincinnati Ballet, and the Basel Ballet of Switzerland, she enjoyed a wide ranging repertoire, from the pure classics of Petipa and Fokine, to more contemporary works, including those of Balanchine, Paul Taylor, and Nils Christie. She worked closely with such notable choreographers as John Butler, Hans van Manen, Peter Anastos, Heinz Spoerli, Frederick Franklin and Maurice Béjart. She has been principal guest artist with Uptown Dance Theatre, the Portland Ballet, North Shore Civic Company, Boston Dance Company, and DanceVisions. During her thirty years as professional teacher, Catanzariti has been on the faculties of the South Shore Conservatory and Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre of Boston, and has guest taught throughout North America and Italy, where she was acting Ballet Mistress for the Rondine Balletto di Assisi. In 2019 she received The Teacher of the Year Award by Boston Conservatory Theater Division. Following a severe injury early in her career, Catanzariti sought a more organic, freeing approach to ballet, which she found with Maggie Black and Finis Jhung. This profoundly transformed her relationship to dance, and continues to inform both her dancing and teaching today. Her priority moved from insisting the individual’s body conform to a rigid sense of classical ballet, to honoring and cherishing the body through the discipline of classical ballet, and thereby finding freedom and expression. #bostonconservatory #bocomtdi #dance #ballet
We’re just 3 weeks away from the start of MTDI ⭐️💙Today we’re highlighting our very own Tommy Coye, who will be returning this summer to teach MT Dance and Repertoire! Tommy has been a well-known and respected dance educator in the Boston area for more than 35 years. Teaching jazz, musical theatre dance and video dance classes for teens and adults, and has taught at some of the areas most prestigious universities, studios and dance programs. Tommy is currently on the dance faculty of Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s Theater Division, and has been training and adjudicating students on a professional track since 2009. He was also a long-time faculty member of Boston’s renowned Jeannette Neill Dance Studio (JNDS), where he served as the studio’s Managing Director, directed bi-annual repertory concerts and was Program Director for their annual Powered by Dance summer training intensives. He has also taught musical theatre dance at Emerson College as well as master classes and workshops throughout New England. Within JNDS, Tommy was also Associate Director, lead dancer and choreographer for ACE Entertainment, a Boston-based entertainment production company specializing in dancers and choreographers for corporate events, product presentation, film and video. He was also the Associate Director of The Boston Summer Dance Festival, which brought national and international dance luminaries to city of Boston. Additionally, Tommy was also significantly involved with Boston Youth Moves (BYM), a non-profit pre-professional dance training ground for teens, since its inception in 1990. In addition to serving as guest choreographer and teacher, he was actively involved in virtually every aspect of the BYM organization. Most notably he served as Board President for over 15 years and was longtime Chair of Fundraising/Development. As a performer and choreographer, Tommy’s work has been seen nationally and internationally: most notably The Heat, with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and Black Mass, with Johnny Depp. More recently, he served as Associate Choreographer for Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s renowned production of Swing!. #bostonconservatory #bocomtdi

We’re getting closer and closer to the start of MTDI 2024!! Who’s ready for some more faculty highlights? Today we’re featuring the fabulous Janelle Gilchrist who will be returning this summer to teach ballet. Janelle received her early training in ballet, modern dance, and jazz at the Harriet Hoctor Ballet School, Boston Ballet School, José Mateo Ballet Theatre, Broadway Dance Project, Concord Academy, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. She earned a BFA in Dance Performance at the Hartt School (University of Hartford) and a Master of Arts in teaching from Mount Holyoke College. Gilchrist apprenticed with the Hartford Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, and was a company dancer with José Mateo Ballet Theatre and City Ballet Boston. She performed in Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker, where she debuted as the Sugar Plum Fairy. In addition to her performance career, Gilchrist served as the principal and lead teacher at José Mateo Ballet Theatre’s Dorchester School. She also taught ballet in several local programs, including Tony Williams’ Dance Center, Step By Step, and Boston University’s Reach Program. Vietnamese American principal dancer John Lam (@johndilam) of the Boston Ballet is bidding farewell to the stage and embracing new opportunities. Lam’s journey began in central California, where he started ballet at the age of 4 and later joined the Marin Ballet under the mentorship of Mikko Nissinen. When Nissinen moved to Boston in 2002 as the artistic director of the Boston Ballet, he invited Lam to join the company. Lam’s time in Boston has been marked by personal milestones, including meeting his husband and raising two sons who find inspiration in their father’s dedication and discipline. He became a finalist in international ballet competitions in Seoul and Helsinki and won the Princess Grace Award. In 2006, he received a proclamation from the mayor of San Rafael, California, for his artistic achievements. Sarah is a performer, director/choreographer and proud alum of The Boston Conservatory. She was seen in the Broadway First National Tour of Mean Girls and The Prom. Recent Director and Choreographer credits include Legally Blonde, Chicago, Bright Star and Hairspray. She is a teaching artist at many studios and schools in NYC and the surrounding areas. Coming back to Boston to teach is one of her greatest joys as many of her skills as a performer and choreographer were honed at BOCO and MTDI thanks to Michelle Chasse. Today we’re featuring the incredible Ramone Owens who will be returning this summer to teach MT Dance and Repertoire! Ramone joined the Conservatory in 2020 and is an assistant professor of theater specializing in musical theater and jazzdance. Prior to the Conservatory, Owens served on the faculty of the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts (NYCDA) and Long Island University (LIU), and was a guest instructor at the American Music and Dramatic Academy’s High School Summer Conservatory (AMDA, New York). Owens has been associate choreographer at North Carolina Theatre, Pace University, and the University of Michigan. Owens spent twelve years as a performer. Highlighted credits include Broadway and touring performances of Beetlejuice, the Musical (world premiere, original Broadway cast) and Motown: The Musical; an off-Broadway production of Finian’s Rainbow at the Irish Repertory Theater; and regional productions of The Sting at the Paper Mill Playhouse (world premiere) and The Prince of Egypt at TheaterWorks Silicon Valley (world premiere). His regional credits also include productions at Sacramento Music Circus, Musical Theater West, and Tuacahn Center for the Arts. A proud alum of Boston Conservatory, Owens holds a B.F.A. in musical theater with an emphasis in dance. ☀️☀️The weather is heating up in Boston this week, and so is our excitement for MTDI! Today we’re highlighting Candice Brown, who will be returning this summer to teach acting. Candice Brown joined the Conservatory in 2004 and is an associate professor of theater. She teaches acting, voice, and speech for the graduate and undergraduate musical theater programs, and acting for the Musical Theater Dance Intensive summer program. Brown is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, and is a Boston-based actor, director, and voice and dialect coach. Regionally, Brown has performed with Gamm Theatre, Lyric Stage Company, Cape Rep Theatre, Actors’ Shakespeare Project, New York Theatre Workshop, American Repertory Theater, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Bristol Valley Theatre Company, and Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival. In addition, Brown has directed several productions for the Conservatory, including the Boston premiere of Theory of Relativity in 2017. Prior to the Conservatory, Brown taught at Wheaton College, Brandeis University’s M.F.A. acting training program, and Wheelock College. Brown earned tenure at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where she taught voice, movement, and scene study. Brown also directed productions at SUNY for five seasons. She is the owner and operator of VoiceWorks in Milton, Massachusetts, and coaches acting and voice privately in Boston, New York, and abroad. #bostonconservatory #bocomtdi #acting

We are just one month away from the start of MTDI! Today we’re featuring the fabulous Eric Anthony Johnson who will be joining us this summer to teach MT dance and repertoire. Eric is an alumnus of the Boston Conservatory and a Broadway veteran who is currently touring North America with Beetlejuice the musical. Eric was in the original Broadway production of BEETLEJUICE the musical. Upon graduating from The Boston Conservatory, he moved to NYC and, within a month, was cast in the first national tour of WEST SIDE STORY. Other credits include the touring productions of EVITA (1st national), ELF (1st National), R+H’s CINDERELLA (1st national) and MISS SAIGON. He has performed at dozens of regional theaters including The American Repertory Theater, The National Theatre in D.C. (BEETLEJUICE pre-broadway engagement), Kansas City Starlight, Sacramento Music Circus, The Kennedy Center, Lone Tree Arts Center, and Northern Stage. Eric has performed on Television in Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO, HBO’s the Gilded Age, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 2019 Tony Awards. Eric was also featured in the feature film Spinning Gold. However, Eric’s journey is not confined to the stage and screen alone. As a sought-after choreographer and teacher, he has shared his wisdom and expertise with aspiring artists at Broadway Dance Center, The Boston Conservatory, The Berklee college of music, ArtsBridge, the Musical Theatre Dance Intensive at Boston Conservatory, Camp Broadway at the Cleveland Playhouse, The Growing Studio, Broadway Workshop, Broadway Classroom and various other institutions. Next up in our faculty highlights is our very own Lori L’Italien who will be joining us to teach voice this summer! Ms. L’Italien is an Assistant Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at Boston Conservatory and has been on the voice faculty since 2017. She specializes in musical theater and pop/rock styles, and working with singers to develop a versatile, flexible, and healthy technique that allows for freedom of expression and storytelling throughout a broad range of musical styles. A versatile and in-demand performer, L’Italien has been seen on both opera and musical theater stages across Boston and New England. Recent highlights include: Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder with Lyric Stage Company, Magenta in Rocky Horror Show (Moonbox); Lisa in A New Brain(Moonbox); Acid Queen in Tommy(Maine State Music Theatre); Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls (Reagle MT, for which she was nominated for both an ARTS IMPULSE Award (Best Actress in a Musical) and an IRNE Award (Best Supporting Actress in a Musical); Lucille Frank in Parade (FUDGE), for which she was nominated for an IRNE award; Gabby/Bobbi in City of Angels(FUDGE); Sally Bowles in Cabaret, and Betty Haynes in White Christmas. Ms L’Italien can be seen as a frequent soloist with the Firebird Pops Orchestra. As an educator, Lori has served as an instructor and administrator for the Metropolitan Opera Guild in their Boston Urban Voices Program and for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. She is the former Program Director of Performing Arts at Lasell University where she directed the theater productions, the choir, taught voice, music theory, acting for the stage, and musical theater history and helped oversee the creation of a Performing Arts minor. Chip is a director, choreographer, and dancer based out of New York City. Chip made his broadway debut in On the Town as assistant choreographer, swing and dance captain to the Emmy Award winning Joshua Bergasse and was the associate choreographer to Denis Jones on the first national tour of Tootsie the Musical. Performing credits include: Broadway/NYC: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Rockettes. 1st national tours: R+H’s Cinderella, Andy Blankenbuehler’s Joseph... Dreamcoat. TV/Film: The Gilded Age, Saturday Night Live, Isn’t it Romantic, The Tony Awards on CBS, The Today Show, Avon’s “Boss Life,” British Vogue, and MAC Cosmetics. Chip’s choreography has been seen at DanceBreak NYC, Holland America Line, and ACT of CT. As a director, Chip has directed at Transcendence Theatre Company, RWS Entertainment Group, Hersheypark, Azamara Club Cruises, and MSC Cruiseline. Chip was associate director/choreographer of the Kennedy Center 50th Anniversary Concert, and the YoungArts Gala 2017. Additionally, Chip was associate choreographer of On the Town at San Francisco Symphony, Bernstein at 100 starring Misty Copeland at Wolf Trap with the National Symphony Orchestra, and at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
