【New on LIKE A FEVER! | Mimi Khúc, “A Pedagogy of Unwellness”】 What hurts? And how do we go on living while it hurts? Mimi Khúc’s latest piece on LIKE A FEVER begins to answer these questions while interrogating the myth of meritocracy, ableism in the academy, and mental health’s insistence on wellness. Rooted in too-big feelings and stories from her teaching, her words ask us to turn our gaze to the structures that keep us unwell—and to recognise that being unwell is not a failure. Excerpted from her creative-critical book, “dear elia: Letters from the Asian American Abyss,” Khúc opts out of the tenure book form that upholds the systems of value she aims to tackle—enacting the same kind of care she advocates for. 【Join our online talk introducing the Zahoor ul Akhlaq Archive】 Co-presented by Asia Art Archive and Hauser & Wirth Institute, this event brings together art historians Samina Iqbal and Simone Wille to share their research from the Zahoor ul Akhlaq Archive, AAA’s forthcoming Research Collection. Zahoor ul Akhlaq (1941–99) is one of the most influential artists and art educators from Pakistan. Comprising photographic materials, writings, correspondence, sketchbooks, and drawings, Akhlaq’s archive traces the artist’s development from his student years to his subsequent role as a teacher and administrator, showcasing how he combined modernist abstraction with traditions of calligraphy and miniature painting. Iqbal’s presentation investigates how Akhlaq conveyed his artistic vision through public projects, while Wille establishes an understanding of how different geographies, landscapes, and architectural details informed Akhlaq’s practice. This online talk is free and open to the public with registration via our link in bio. Digitisation and processing of the Zahoor ul Akhlaq Archive was made possible with the generous support of the Hauser & Wirth Institute. — Image 1: Zahoor ul Akhlaq, “Fish,” 1997. 【Join us for a lecture performance “When History Comes Alive”】 History is not simply a record of the past, bound by historical documents and archival materials—it remains a dynamic, ongoing conversation. 【New comic series! | Ai Ya Corporation Ltd.】 Check out LIKE A FEVER’s latest ongoing slice of life comic, “Ai Ya Corporation Ltd.,” by Jocelin Kee. In the comic’s first panels, a newcomer takes over the mundane upkeep of a museum after the passing of its previous caretaker. This uneventful routine is interrupted, one day, when the walls begin to grow teeth. Follow the comic’s story and read its editorial introduction “today, tomorrow, and the day after that” by AAA Assistant Editor Andrea Chu, who writes about the strange appeal of the slice of life genre. — Images 1-3: Jocelin Kee, “Lateral Incisor.” #AsiaArtArchive #LikeAFever #comicseries #sliceoflife

【Books to read alongside “Another Day in Hong Kong”】 Come visit our exhibition “Another Day in Hong Kong” and read books recommended by our Curatorial and Research teams! Here’s a reading list to broaden and deepen your understanding of the exhibition’s concept and context: 📗 Revisit photographs from Oscar Ho’s “One Day in Hong Kong,” the exhibition that inspired the concept behind “Another Day in Hong Kong.” These were photographs taken by Hong Kong’s public on a single day in 1990 to explore how the city’s visual culture is in embedded in daily life. 📙 By layering archival images with personal memories and anecdotes, the dream-like pages of “Hong Kong Memories” capture the spirit of Holly Lee’s practice and echo the curatorial concept of “Another Day in Hong Kong.” 📒 See how nineteen local photographers—including Lee Ka-sing and Holly Lee—explore the theme “On Hong Kong” in this 1997 issue of “NuNaHeDuo (Dislocation)” and offer distinct perspectives of a transitional moment in time. 📔 View the varied artworks included in “Portraiting Our CE 2017,” along with photo documentation of four previous instalments of the exhibition from 1996 to 2012, which invited artists to express their visions and concerns for the future of Hong Kong. 📗 “Para/Site 1996” pieces together the independent art space’s first five years through articles and archival images of artworks, exhibitions, and the local art scene in Hong Kong. 📕 Get a sense of the then-emerging local art scene in “Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 1996” that includes adjudicator’s reviews and highlighted artworks, such as an essay by Wucius Wong, and artworks by Jaffa Lam and Frog King Kwok Mang Ho. #AsiaArtArchive #AnotherDayinHongKong #readinglist #hongkongart #hongkongexhibition

【Weekend Read | But Survival Doesn’t Work Like That】 Written in the thick of his Winter 2023 teaching semester, Michael Leung’s essay “But Survival Doesn’t Work Like That” reflects on his week-long experiment of fully committing to self-publishing. 【Exhibition highlights | Florence Lam, “Who am I?”】 On 19 October 1996, Florence Lam was only a four-year-old toddler. Her memories of that day have faded, so she turned to her mother to find out what may have happened. During their interview, Lam saw how even adults couldn’t rely solely on their own memories to verify their experiences. Presented in the form of a children’s book, the interview’s stories are retold as conversations between Lam’s child- and adult-self, and in recorded form featuring her mother’s voice. The cow-shaped bookshelf, tailor made by our colleague, Isabella Chan, references Florence’s favourite toy. While children’s books appear to be simple, they shed light on how storytelling—whether personal or historical—inevitably contains elements of fiction. Through a child’s gaze, we may learn to question narratives that appear fixed and relearn stories with a restored open-mindedness. — All images: Florence Lam, “Who Am I?,” artist’s book, 2024. 【April new arrivals!】 New titles on memes, migrant worker creatives, filmmaking, and more are now available. Come spend a leisurely afternoon reading at our library! 📗 Edited by Cem A. of @freezemagazine, “The Meme Kit” gives context and tools for dissecting Internet memes and their makers. 📗 This two-part zine features “Biography of a Fish,” which looks at the lives of fish in India, and “Omehen,” which transcribes a discussion with displaced Lumad children in the Philippines. This zine is part of “How To Not Build a Nation,” a project from South and Southeast Asia on how nation states reproduce colonial and pre-colonial violences. 📙 Designed in the style of a balikbayan (“to return home”) box, “Ingat” is an anthology of literary and artistic contributions by migrant worker creatives in Hong Kong. 📙 “WMA Images: Perspectives” commemorates twelve years of the Hong Kong non-profit, and its dedication to archiving lens-based media and inspiring social change. 📘 The guidebook for “Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present” lays out the postcolonial principles that underpin the exhibition, and introduces participating artists, works, and venues. 📘 “History Has Failed Us, But No Matter,” challenges normative histories of modernisation in East Asia through the lens of gender and tradition in the work of three women artists, who first exhibited at the Korean Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale. 📒 “A Conversation with the Sun” records a fictional discussion between artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the Sun, and other fabricated characters. 【Meet AAA’s Try Try Zine resident Ning-Ning!】 As Try Try Zines nears its launch, we’re thrilled to introduce one of our 2024 zine residents Nicole M. Nepomuceno (Ning-Ning) and her zine “An Archive of Annotations.” In 2020, Ning-Ning, then still a student at the University of Hong Kong, made her first zine “where we come from, where we go next.” Noting a glaring absence of ethnic minority artists in Hong Kong art history, she looked through AAA’s entire database to look for them. In making her latest zine now, close to four years later, Ning-Ning recognises the limits of framing oneself as minority and as marginal, paying close attention to positioning the margin as an expanse, rather than a limiting periphery, where voices exist and permeate. She reached out to friends and collaborators, placing an emphasis on collecting stories that exist outside of institutional spaces. As indicated by the zine’s title, spaces for annotation abound—with the hopes that readers could, like herself, begin writing on their own terms. Learn more about our zine workshops via the link in bio. Kindly note that Ning-Ning’s scrapbooking workshop is by invitation only. Please contact [email protected] for more information. — Image 1: Zine resident Nicole M. Nepomuceno (Ning-Ning). Image 2: Ning-Ning, “An Archive of Annotations,” 2024. 【Weekend Reads | From K-pop Fan to Translator】 We are excited to share that Shanna Tan, whom we spoke with in LIKE A FEVER’s latest conversation, is releasing her English translation of Singaporean writer Wong Koi Tet’s “Dakota.” Read our interview with Shanna and learn about her work as a translator, the growing popularity of Korean healing fiction, and the dream of starting her own bookstore. From her teenage years, when she translated a Korean post about G-Dragon on the now-defunct microblogging platform Me2day, to her debut as the English translator of Hwang Bo-reum’s bestseller “Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop,” Shanna shares her journey in literary translation. Read more via our link in the bio, and explore other pieces in the “Afterlives” series, which delves into the politics of translation. — Image 1: Published translations and originals of “Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop.” Image 2: Portrait of Shanna Tan.

Do you still remember what happened on October 19, 1996? Upon flipping through the calendar, the calendar for 1996 happens to be the same as that of 2024, except for the differences in holidays. How did people in the past imagine the future? With a span of 28 years, is there a disparity between memory and reality, or is it merely a patchwork of vague impressions and imaginations? In the linear flow of time, can memories be influenced and distorted? Every grain of sand represents a world, and history is shaped by the lives of countless individuals. The exhibition “Another Day in Hong Kong” by Asia Art Archive seeks to recreate the artistic history of that day. It showcases paper collections, archival documents, newspaper clippings, publications, songs, and advertisements. Through these documents, the exhibition extends and reinterprets the past, inviting six groups of artists from different age brackets to engage with the theme and collectively rediscover the significance of that day. 【Exhibition highlights | A Call from 2024 to 19 October 1996】 One of the first works you encounter at our latest exhibition, “Another Day in Hong Kong,” is a three-channel video work titled “A Call from 2024 to 19 October 1996.” Compiling films, television shows, and advertisements, the montage serves as a time machine that takes you back to Hong Kong of the late 1990s—one that straddled pagers and landline, and nascent mobile and Internet technologies, suggesting the seismic shifts that were underway. The creators of this video work—our research team members Aki Kung and Pun Tsz Wai—offer you a small glimpse into the past. What memories can the archive activate? How do memory and imagination intersect to create personal or collective narratives? Find out more at our library exhibition, open Mon–Sat, 10am–6pm. 【Thank you for supporting LIKE A FEVER】 Earlier this month, we welcomed new faces and reconnected with old friends at LIKE A PARTY, a night celebrating the launch of AAA’s revamped publishing platform, LIKE A FEVER. Our panellists Michael Leung, Eva Wong Yi, and Emily Wong Chun Ying shared their personal attachments to writing and publishing, leading to a thoughtful round of questions from the crowd. A special edition DIY zine, featuring LIKE A FEVER’s “greatest hits,” was also a crowd favourite. As Ani Phoebe from Bad Times Disco stirred up the room with her radiant vinyl set, participants customised their own zines to bring home and wrote postcards to their future pen-pals. We hope that LIKE A PARTY marked the beginning to something—a query, an idea, a friendship—that spurs meaningful connections. In the meantime, check out new pieces on LIKE A FEVER and feel free to pitch to us anytime! — All images are from LIKE A PARTY, March 7 2024. Photo: Dory Cheng. Asia Art Archive | Another Day in Hong Kong Reactivating archives, activating a reimagining of history, is essentially activating a new approach to thinking about the future. In this exciting new exhibition at the Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong artists are invited to reconstruct a day in history, October 19, 1996. This day serves as the median date for all archived documents in the Hong Kong branch of the Asia Art Archive, a day of absolute rationality, an ordinary day in Hong Kong's history. The intervention of art brings forth a vibrant sensibility from what seems like cold archives, imbued with a hauntological melancholia as described by Mark Fisher. This reconstruction is also political, challenging the progressive narrative of the so-called victors. As Derrida suggests, the memories preserved and replicated in archives are not given but rather a "gift" that always demands a response and bears responsibility, thus its haunting presence is almost ethical, especially in the here and now where justice urgently requires restoration. This is undoubtedly one of the best exhibitions in Hong Kong this March, and perhaps one of the best of the year, as it confronts and responds to the very things saturating the reality around us and the future which are being cancelled slowly. #島聚 #asiaartarchive #baselhongkong #contemporaryart #hongkongart #hongkongartist #artreview

【Another Day in Hong Kong | The story behind the chosen date】 AAA’s March exhibition, “Another Day in Hong Kong,” takes October 19, 1996 as its focal point. A seemingly arbitrary drop in the ocean of time, this date is the median in the timeline of AAA’s Hong Kong event database, representing the breadth of our Collections. Not much appears to have happened that day—flights continued to land and take off at Kai Tak airport, Tsing Ma Bridge underwent its usual day of construction. On this ostensibly uneventful day, over seventy arts and cultural events took place. Here, the provocations of the exhibition unfold: What happens when we look deeper into one day? What happens when we challenge the past as a settled record? What art histories emerge? — Image 1: Reproductions of lunar calendar entries for October 19, 1996 and 2024. 【Sign-up for this year’s Annual Artist’s Lecture】 We are thrilled to welcome Raqs Media Collective as our guest speakers for this year’s Annual Artist’s Lecture. Formed in New Delhi in 1992, Raqs Media Collective explores the intersection of contemporary art, philosophical speculation, and historical enquiry through films, publications, gatherings, lecture performances, and curatorial projects. In this lecture, Raqs Media Collective will reflect on their long-standing commitment to “kinetic contemplation,” especially regarding interruptions, distortions, shifts, twists, and flows in the perception and representation of time in daily life, archives, and imagined timelines. Before the lecture, a brunch reception will be held from 11am to 12pm. The reception and lecture are both free and open to the public—register now via our link in bio! — The Annual Artist’s Lecture is generously supported by Mimi Brown & Alp Erçil, Mimi Chun & Chris Gradel, and Wendy Lee & Stephen Li. 【Announcing AAA’s March exhibition】 We are thrilled to announce AAA’s upcoming exhibition, “Another Day in Hong Kong.” Opening on 18 March, the exhibition meticulously reconstructs one day from Hong Kong’s art historical past, examining what a day in and of art history might look like. The exhibition borrows from precedents established by Oscar Ho’s 1990 exhibition, “One Day in Hong Kong,” which photographed a diverse set of people and events in a twenty-four-hour span. “Another Day in Hong Kong” expands upon Ho’s exhibition by exploring new dimensions. Archival materials from AAA’s Hong Kong Collections and other local archival resources will be displayed, alongside newly commissioned works by six groups of Hong Kong artists and collectives. Stay tuned for more posts about the exhibition! — “Another Day in Hong Kong” is generously supported by the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mimi Brown & Alp Erçil, Mimi Chun & Chris Gradel, and Wendy Lee & Stephen Li. 【Last week to view “mould the wing to match the photograph”】 Our exhibition on the Mrinalini Mukherjee Archive, “mould the wing to match the photograph,” closes this Thursday, 29 February. Seize your last chance to view rare archival materials and Mukherjee’s 1986 hemp sculpture “Pari.” Over the last six months, the exhibition brought about an exciting series of public programmes. We have been delighted to see visitors enjoy our curator-led tours with thoughtful questions. David Leung’s somatic movement workshop engendered heartfelt reflections on improvisation and instruction. Our Inter-Archives Conversations explored how researchers, curators, and editors approach instructions that artists leave with care. A knotting workshop allowed for a hands-on experience of the exhibition’s themes, and an online conversation dove into the multifaceted relationship between photography and sculpture. Tomorrow brings the exhibition’s final programme, a performance by artist Movana Chen and dancer Francisco Borges. Register via our link in bio! — “mould the wing to match the photograph” is generously supported by Mimi Brown & Alp Erçil, and Virginia & Wellington Yee. The Mrinalini Mukherjee Archive was made possible with the support of the Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation and Godrej Seeds and Genetics Ltd. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, for loaning us “Pari” (1986) for this exhibition. #AsiaArtArchive #MrinaliniMukherjee #sculpture #performance #artexhibition #arthistory

body container: questioning the line join our performance @movanachen @awakedanceflow this sat, 24 Feb 2024 11am to 12:30pm Asia Art Archive Library 11/F, Hollywood Centre, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong How does sculpture respond to changing landscapes? In what ways can audiences connect with a performative sculpture through stillness? In this performance, Movana Chen wears a double-container sculpture knitted from maps, and in collaboration with dancer Francisco Borges, activates it through movement and stillness. The performance will explore AAA’s library as a landscape, which expands on Chen’s practice using books as knitting material to create sculptures. more details @asiaartarchive 📷 rebecca tso AAA #performanceart #questioningtheline #movanachen #hongkong #asiaartarchive
