This amazing functional artwork connects two cliffs located on the north side of Wissahickon Valley Park. Created by artist Jody Pinto (see all 4 photos). The 59-foot long steel "Fingerspan Bridge" is shaped like a finger, with its dark brown hue harmonizing year-round with its natural surroundings. The enclosed bridge stands 9-feet tall and 4-feet wide giving it a tunnel-like appearance. Thousands of half-inch holes perforate the “skin” of the finger, allowing air and light through, and the bridge's grated bottom allows those passing through to view the wooded ravine 40-feet below. Installed in 1987 with the assistance of a helicopter, the bridge was inspired by Michelangelo’s "Creation of Adam" in the Sistine Chapel. The bridge symbolizes Adam’s slightly bent finger as God gives him life; a metaphor for touch, and the connection between body and land. A “fingernail” is even placed atop the lower side of the bridge (see the last two photos). Fingerspan can be accessed by following the park's Orange Trail, not far south of the historic Glen Fern homestead. SEPTA now has two heritage units, both 1974 Silverliner IV railcars in the Regional Rail network. A heritage unit is a train painted, wrapped or stickered with the scheme of an old railroad that doesn't exist anymore. Heritage units are railfan magnets. The 280 is for the Reading Company, formerly serving their lines as 9018. Another Silverliner, 401, has the Penn Central logo 1, 2 Fern Rock Station. 3: Ardsley Station (Warminster Line). 4, 5 Wayne Junction. 6, 7 Suburban Station. More Silverliners are set return as heritage units soon. Now part of Eastern University in St. Davids, the “Walmarthon” estate was completed in 1913 as a summer home for leather tanner Charles Walton (see all 10 photos). The stunning campus is peaceful and picturesque, with a lush, hilly landscape containing lakes and a number of spectacular Spanish-Renaissance style buildings that feature vaulted medieval-like interiors along with terra-cotta roofs designed by famed tile maker Henry Mercer. Beside the main mansion is a beautiful terrace that leads to Willow Lake, which was originally the Walton family swimming pool constructed with a concrete foundation. Also located nearby is the "Eastern Waterwheel." One of the few working waterwheels in the country, the wheel was built in 1912 to irrigate flower beds and power fountains adorning the estate . The wheel was restored in 1972 and is on the National Registry of Historic Waterwheels. Other structures from the original estate also remain including the one-time greenhouse, gatehouse (first photo), horse stable, and mansion billiard room, which now serves as the university prayer chapel (see last photo). This is truly a beautiful campus and one of our personal favorite "relaxation" spots.
