One year ago today āœˆļøšŸŒ The journey beganā€¦ May 30th, 2023 : I set out on the adventure of a lifetime with my family and my camera, totally unaware of how my life was about to be changed. I never imagined in a million years that a vacation to South Africa would turn into the opportunity I have now to break into outdoor and wildlife photography. May 30th, 2024 : I am so excited to return to South Africa in just one month from now to work with my new friends in the Eastern Cape and capture some epic hunting safaris. I will be posting about my journey every step of the way, so strap in and stay tuned. #Wildlifephotography #outdoorphotography #naturephotography #wildlifevideo #safari #southafrica #southafricasafari #safariphoto #easterncape #texaswildlife #documentary #texasphotographer

A hammerhead shark off East Hampton shores takes in the sun, surveying for its next meal. This encounter yesterday might be the most profound marine life experience Iā€™ve had to date. This species has been on the bucket list for a while now, I couldnā€™t believe my luck finding it, especially with such calm and sunny conditions. Better yet, the timing was perfect with last night marking the beginning of Shark Week. One of nine hammerhead species, the smooth hammerhead is on the larger end of the spectrum averaging 8-11ft long. Given that the pilot fish cruising next to it is on average 12inches my guess is that this shark is around 13ft long (or larger). Hammerheads have small mouths that are suited to eat prey like squid, eels, and rays, so even if provoked they are highly unlikely to bite humans. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #HammerheadShark #MontaukNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #SharkWeek #SharkVideo #OceanPredator #DJIshots #UnderwaterWorld #CoastalScenery #ExploreMontauk #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #SharkEncounter #montauk #DroneMagic #SharkConservation #DJIfootage #OceanAdventures #SharkWeek2023 #DroneSurveillance #sharks #DronePhotography #MarineConservation

Two days ago, a school of Menhaden abruptly fled from a horde of predators causing a wake on the waterā€™s surface. Iā€™ve filmed blitzes before, but this was something else. The fish swam nearly 2 miles within 20 minutes, ending in a boil so intense that oxygen levels became exhausted, leaving fish unconscious or worse. It was over before I could even comprehend what was happening. _ I donā€™t know if I would even call this a bluefish blitz, considering the mass of dolphins, sharks, and whales that caused such chaos. ā€œFauna feeding frenzyā€ feels more appropriate. The last few shots demonstrate a quintessential bluefish blitz, but everything else about this morning bewildered me. Choosing one subject to film amidst all this simultaneous action was tough. _ Whether it was intentional or opportunistic, itā€™s not often I see so many different species cooperate at this scale. Humpback whales in the Northeast rely on the abundance of menhaden fish. When the populations of these fish are threatened, humpbacks and countless other species also face risks. Menhaden (aka bunker) play a significant role in the well-being of the ocean. Not only are they prey for many species, but are also omnivorous filter feeders, creating a vital connection between the top and bottom of the food chain. Menhaden consume both zooplankton and phytoplankton, which absorb essential nutrients and carbon from the water and atmosphere. By filtering out and consuming these organisms, they help purify the water and contribute to long-term carbon sequestration, supporting local and global ecosystems. Protecting these fish is essential to a healthy and safe future for marine and human populations. _ _ _ _ _ Fully zoomed and cropped _ _ _ _ _ _ #HumpbackWhale #MenhadenFish #EastHamptonNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #WhaleFeeding #OceanBeauty #DJIshots #UnderwaterWorld #CoastalScenery #ExploreEastHampton #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #WhaleWatching #FishFeeding #EastHamptonVibes #DroneMagic #MarineFeast #DJIfootage #OceanAdventures #DroneSurveillance #MarineConservation

When I really think about whether or not sharks are dangerous, it feels like thereā€™s little reason to be fearful. The sensationalized stereotypes surrounding sharks have drastically shaped the way theyā€™re perceived, often undeservedly and irrationally. As a drone operator, I see at least one shark a day, and more often than not, I spot 20-50 sharks. _ Iā€™d be lying if I said all these shark sightings havenā€™t changed the way I interact with the ocean. My friends and I used to play this game; we would swim to the outer bar, dive down, and grab sand, then swim 10 strokes further out and dive down again. We would repeat this until only one person was left with sand in their hand. As we got older, we started playing this game with fins on, allowing us to go farther out and deeper down. I remember times when we would look back at the shore and only see a sliver of land. I havenā€™t played this game in years. _ Sharks are apex predators, theyā€™re wild animals, and the ocean is their home. They certainly can be frightening, but itā€™s important to remember that humans pose a much greater threat to them than they do to us. As with so many other animals, sharks are overfished, pushing countless species closer and closer towards extinction. They are incredibly important to the health of our oceans, and if we donā€™t begin to change societal prejudices, it wonā€™t be much longer before species start disappearing. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #Sharks #MontaukNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #SharkWeek #SharkVideo #OceanPredators #DJIshots #UnderwaterWorld #CoastalScenery #ExploreMontauk #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #SharkEncounter #MontaukVibes #DroneMagic #SharkConservation #DJIfootage #OceanAdventures #SharkWeek2023 #DroneSurveillance #MontaukNature #DronePhotography #marineconservation

It was an absolute treat to see the iconic Saharan Sand Viper (Cerastes vipera) in the deep south of Morocco again! Thanks to a sharp-eyed @naturetrek_wildlife_holidays group, which I hosted with @matthewclarkewild, we managed to observe three individuals in this amazing desert environment. Although all three were absolute stunners, this individual was particularly beautiful, boasting pale blue eye-stripes and blotches over his body. This patterning is typical of C. vipera along the Atlantic coast of Morocco, whereas inland populations tend to be more of a sandy brown colour. #snakes #reptiles #herpetology #herping #herpingworldwide #herpingtheglobe #nature #wildlife #wildlifevideo #viper #BBCwildlifePOTD #desert #sahara #morocco #desertreptiles #cerastes #cerastesvipera #desertwildlife #NGPhotographerChallenge #nikonz6ii #nikonz6iiphotography #herpphotography #fieldherping #herps #herpetofauna #reptiles #reptile #niffeature

Sometimes in the early morning, before people start swimming and playing in the surf, dolphins take the opportunity to come close to shore. This dolphin in Amagansett was at times less than 5 yards from the sand. I usually get to the beach around 6:30am for a few reasons, the air is still and the whales are more frequent, but mostly because itā€™s quiet and I get to see the ocean with less human disturbance. Iā€™m not sure why this dolphin got so close; maybe it was following some fish, or seeking safety, or maybe it was just as eager as I am to see the beaches in the morning light. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #Dolphin #AmagansettNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #CoastalLife #BeachEncounter #OceanBeauty #DJIshots #CoastalScenery #ExploreAmagansett #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #BeachDolphin #AmagansettVibes #DroneMagic #BeachAdventures #DJIfootage #OceanEncounters #Drone #marineconservation

Itā€™s a hard feeling to describe, somewhere between euphoric and giddy. I was a junior lifeguard the first time I saw a whale breach, I mustā€™ve been eleven or twelve. It was out on the horizon, fully leaping out of the water while the entire beach stood still to watch. This was long before the menhaden returned and humpback sightings became a daily occurrence. The second time was in 2018, it was the first summer I had a drone and right when marine life activity started to flourish. At that point I wasnā€™t able to get the drone up fast enough to capture any good footage. The third and only other time was this week, and I was definitely ready for it this time. Ever since I started filming marine life on the East End Iā€™ve wanted to get this shot, Iā€™ve wanted to reclaim that feeling of reverence and awe from when I was a kid at juniors. - On Long Island, most of the time when we watch humpbacks break the watersā€™ surface theyā€™re lunge feeding, launching themselves horizontally or at an angle to engulf as much fish possible. Reaching speeds of 18mph to propel 90% of its body above the surface, whales need deeper water to breach than to feed. From my experience, seeing this from shore is incredibly rare as theyā€™re usually far past the horizon where the ocean is boundless. I donā€™t know when Iā€™ll get this opportunity again, but for now Iā€™ll appreciate this experience and the privilege to finally share it with others. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #HumpbackWhale #WhaleBreaching #EastHamptonNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #WhaleWatching #OceanBeauty #DJIshots #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #WhaleEncounter #ExploreEastHampton #DroneMagic #BreachingWhale #DJIfootage #OceanAdventures #WhaleBehavior #DroneSurveillance #EastHamptonNature #DronePhotography #whalesnation

Marine life activity has been picking up lately, it seems like every day something new and exciting happens. Itā€™s been like nothing Iā€™ve ever seen and it wasnā€™t just in Amagansett. Friends from Montauk to Wainscott told me the humpbacks have been feasting near constantly all day, every day. At times within 30 yards of the beach. - After watching this whale feed for over 5 hours, it eventually made its way to deeper water where it breached for 30 minutes straight to then return to shore and feed for another 3 hours. Whales use roughly 1.5% of their daily energy per breach, so when a humpback like this breaches 20 times within an hour you might question whether itā€™s worth it. Itā€™s an expensive endeavor. - Breaching is thought to be a form of communication, but my guess is thatā€™s not always the case. After eating thousands of pounds of fish I also would want to try and work up an appetite before going back for round two. I really wasnā€™t expecting to see breaching again this summer, itā€™s been incredibly rare for me in the past but our ocean is changing so quickly the whalesā€™ behaviors have become increasingly unpredictable. Itā€™s one of the most exciting things I get to watch, and the past few times Iā€™ve been lucky enough to film it, nobody on the beach seems to take notice. Be sure to keep a lookout next time youā€™re at the beach, splashes like this are hard to miss. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #HumpbackWhale #WhaleBreaching #EastHamptonNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #WhaleWatching #OceanBeauty #DJIshots #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #WhaleEncounter #ExploreEastHampton #DroneMagic #BreachingWhale #DJIfootage #OceanAdventures #WhaleBehavior #DroneSurveillance #EastHamptonNature #DronePhotography #whalesnation

Beautiful example of a shark utilizing its dorsal fin to make pinpoint turns. Like a rudder on a boat, the tall fin of a shark allows for efficient and agile movements. I came across this sandbar shark yesterday when I noticed some splashing just past the break, and was surprised to find a species Iā€™ve never seen before. Although theyā€™re one of the most common species along the western Atlantic, this is the first time Iā€™ve properly filmed one. These sharks can grow up to 8ft long and typically swim at depths of 30-200 feet, rarely coming to the surface. Theyā€™re known for their tall, triangular fin that prominently sticks above the surface when pursuing prey. Due to its preference for small prey these sharks arenā€™t considered a threat to humans. Iā€™m perplexed and awed with how smoothly the fin cuts through the water, producing a glassy wall of water in its wake. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #SandbarShark #AmagansettNY #SharkHunt #MarineLife #OceanPredator #CoastalAdventures #SharkVideo #OceanBeauty #WildlifeVideo #SharkEncounter #NatureCapture #CoastalScenery #ExploreAmagansett #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #UnderwaterWorld #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #NatureInAction #SharkBehavior #AmagansettVibes #MarineMagic #SharkConservation #OceanAdventures #DJIfootage #PredatorPrey #SharkDynamics #NatureEncounters #CoastalLife

Turkey stones! Do you save them? This is fairly new to me. I saw @fromfieldtoplate and a couple other guys do the same thing with theirs and I loved the idea. Something very unique to each individual turkey. Here are the stones from the bird I killed in South Carolina and the bird I killed in Georgia. South Carolina bird is almost all quartz. Georgia bird consists of larger, darker stones. Even found a piece of bird shot with the stones of the Georgia bird. . . . #ThePartTimeHunters #huntingphotography #try #huntingthings #trysomethingdifferent #rocks #huntingphoto #trysomethingnewtoday #bigbird #bird #gobbler #hunting #jake #easternturkey #southcarolina #southcarolinaturkey #video #wildlifevideo #turkeyhunting #turkeyfeathers #huntingvideo #shotgun #rifle #turkeystones #stones #turkey #sitka #remington #winchester #vortexoptics

A few weeks ago, I had one of the most incredible experiences to date, my first encounter with a finback whale. I had been filming humpbacks lunge feed all day long, mostly within 100 yards of shore, when I finally decided to head home. As I was walking off the beach, up and over the hill, I turned my head for one last look. I was surprised to see an oddly shaped dorsal fin led by a pod of dolphins. Something looked off, so with my last remaining battery I set myself up near the parking lot and launched the drone. - As soon as I could see the whale I knew it wasnā€™t a humpback. Itā€™s always difficult to comprehend the scale of something without a reference point, but when the dolphins swimming just ahead finally surfaced, I could tell this animal was enormous. Finback (aka fin) whales are the second largest whale species in the world, growing to an incredible 70-80 feet. I had heard they were in the area, but never imagined such a large creature would ever get so close to shore. They are normally found in deep waters at least a few miles offshore. This whale was a mere 300 yards from the beach. - The finback surfaced for a few breaths, then completely disappeared. My battery still had 60% life remaining, roughly 15 minutes of flight time, nevertheless I wasnā€™t successful in finding the whale again. It was a brief, but profound experience. I was glad I turned around for that last look, and felt incredibly lucky to have witnessed such a rare sight. After moments like this I often wonder if they will ever happen again and why they happen in the first place; Did weather patterns change the whalesā€™s habits? Was there a food source close to shore? Were the humpbacks or dolphins communicating with the finback? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ #finwhale #finback #EastHamptonNY #DJIphotography #DroneCapture #MarineLife #CoastalAdventures #finbackwhale #OceanBeauty #DJIshots #AerialPhotography #MarineBeauty #DJIartistry #OceanDiscovery #WildlifeVideo #DroneLife #WhaleWatching #EastHamptonVibes #DJIfootage #MarineConservation
