📍 Hillcroft Park, Pooley Bridge, Lake District We had a quick stopover at Hillcroft Park on our way back down from the Isle of Skye. It was a short drive from the motorway and was near Ullswater and pretty Pooley Bridge. Here are some things you may want to know and some things we loved about it: ☀️ You choose your pitch when you book. We stayed on pitch C40 which was a hard standing with hedges, giving you your own private space. We had views out to the pods area and stunning views down Ullswater. We were quite close to the toilet block too which is handy for middle of the night trips! ☀️ The facilities block was modern with spacious showers with seats, hair dryers and even the sound track of birds playing. There is also a dishwash area, laundry, a games room, playground, recreational field and a pizza/breakfast van (check days and times). There was a chip shop van on site the night we stayed which was perfect as we arrived late with few supplies. ☀️ It is a larger and busier site than we would normally stay at but then it was a sunny half term weekend. Our more private pitch made it feel like we had our own space. The staff (family run) were so friendly and helpful and the site had all the facilities we needed on our travels. As it was a quick stop over we never had a chance to explore the area this time but it did bring back lovely memories of our previous time in Ullswater. We just spent 3 days on the La Maddalena islands just off Sardinia which was lovely and relaxing. We cycled 50km around the islands, went to many different beaches, paddle boarded around coves and had a couple of drinks on the campsite. The sea was lovely and cool and needed after cycling up some of the hills! Just over 2 years since our first trip in our self converted van and a few more followers so I figured time to stick our faces up again and give an update… We are Anna, Chris, Zoe (11), Erin (nearly 9) and Callie (6). We’ve just come back from our 3rd Lake District trip - having the van has been amazing. The site we stay at is very basic, no electricity, no showers, no kitchen facilities BUT gorgeous views and surrounded by friends ❤️ having the solar panel on the van has been a game changer, mostly because we can use the fridge! We’ve travelled across Europe a couple of times. Our first trip was 4 weeks across several countries (see the pinned post for more details 👀) and last year we travelled to France, visited the Alps, Ile De Re, Biarittz and a quick trip over the border into Spain. This year we’re chasing the sun again and heading back to France but this time with a simpler (and slightly cheaper! 😬) itinerary. We’re spending a few nights on Ile De Re again at the North of the island and a week near Biarittz on the same site we stayed at last year. It’s rare we go back to the same sites abroad but we felt we needed some familiarity this year and we LOVED the easy access to the beach, amazing waves and gorgeous sunsets ☀️ So in short… we’re loving our adventures! Campsite review 📍 Camping Vliegenbos - Amsterdam Pitch Review; We spent 3 nights here over half term and to be completely honest, it was ALOT better than I had expected. Yes, you are packed in like sardines (website pictures show this) and the largest regular pitch size, which we booked (10x5m) doesn’t really give you space for kids to play. In fact, the van and awning not opened fully were the full pitch width, so it’s definitely a ‘simple set up’ kinda place! And you definitely see your neighbours a lot if your doors open out to each other!! Luckily for us, our neighbours on both sides were lovely and we even had drinks with the one side on our last night! Despite the site being pretty much full, it still had an air of quietness about it and the kids found some new friends from Germany to play ball with on the quiet road through the site. Perfect location to explore Amsterdam and the surrounding areas … would I come back? Absolutely!! Have we broken our planet for good? 😥 If you’re destined for heat in your van this summer (firstly, let me know where you’re heading?) and secondly, how do you plan to keep cool in your van? We spent the summer in 35 degree heat last year and in a tin can van, at times it was unbearable. Make sure you are as prepared as you can be. We have been given this cute little portable EvaChill air con unit from @evapolar which is great for cooling the temp in your van. It is small enough to move around with a handy little carry handle, runs on both 12v (usb) or 240v (plug), and only uses 7.5w of power. Fill the cartridge with water to cool the air down for up to 9 hours. Break time… After a week of jam packed activities, and the kids still running at 100% you’ve got to find a balance. So for us to recharge we headed over to the Mermaid inn on Porth beach for a winner winner approach. The outdoor seating is on the beach, so you can rock up, find a bench with a beer, and let the kids crack on in the sand! Day 3 - Another brilliant day @vanlife_festival_uk . Started with fun on the dinky dubs, and we all had a go in the free circus on the diablos, the stilts, and even the uni cycles, lol. Then another walk around looking at more of the show vans that had turned up . Treated ourselves to tea from @mrs_patels, and it was absolutely delicious. Yes, we’re away AGAIN!!! Had booked a little Anniversary/Birthday (Hubster) trip before we left for Spain 🎊 3 nights at quiet Monks Barn Farm (super large pitches with hardstanding AND grass!) 10 minutes cycle outside Stratford. Gave ourselves a self-guided walk around town. Supper at the Rooftop Restaurant and Buddha of Suburbia (adapted by the brilliant, as always, Emma Rice) at @thersc The Swan 🎭 Beautiful free exhibition here during the day with costumes worn by RSC actors, many we have seen over the years. We used to live in this area and went to the theatre every season - about 30 years ago. We headed to the west side of the North York Moors today. Our first stop was at Sutton Bank. Walking along the ridge with fine views down on the Vale of York, and above us gliders were being towed. In the afternoon, we ventured down the 25% gradient hairpin Hill (where caravans are banned) and into the market town of Thirsk. There, we revisited the World of James Herriot, the former vetinary surgery of writer James Herriot (Alf Wight) whose books inspired 2 popular TV series of All Creatures Great and Small. From Thirsk, we headed north and hit the beach! Safe to say, changing wheel bearings is hell🤣 Still need to do the other, 3 new disks and 4 new callipers but one of the bearings completely disintegrated leaving koda stuck with a siezed wheel. 9 hours of work later I am COVERED in oil and crap but koda is driving again! A solo day off today.. We have been on the Isle of Mull for over a month now and have been lucky enough to have all our days off work together.. until this weekend ☀️ I've had today off while Scott has tomorrow off.
