G if for the gift that keeps on giving: our sensory experience. I’m twinning with @chocoluck2021 this week with a #tttt_g and the gift that is the taste experience resulting from Guido Castagna’s mastery of cacao and hazelnuts in his Giuinott and also in this MES (Metodo Naturale) Cuyagua bar -with no hazelnuts but with gloriously, central chocolate, cream and hazelnut notes. They recall the Giuinott experience, but have an added walk through the garden, with green grassy notes bringing light, air and colour to the performance. G is also for Guitar, a reminder of the gift of synesthesia and how when I am tasting my memories are guided by music and colours which I have learnt to associate with taste, maybe due to my early love affair with John Williams and Villa-Lobos and my mastery of the classical guitar - now long gone sadly, along with my youth - but I still have the guitar and those sensory memories, and a brain that often routes my taste through them. This makes my ability to articulate flavours a little slower but I am forever grateful for the recall of this music and the feelings that come with it. I know I am not alone here! Sheeprise. 2024. Gouverneur, NY. My sleep schedule is all sorts of jacked right now. Whenever my ADHD decides to be a dick, I don’t get to sleep. This isn’t always terrible. I went to sleep this morning at 2AM and woke up at 4:30 AM. Yep, 2.5 hours of sleep. As soon as I saw a little light outside, I figured I’d get a good sunrise photo. And man, I could not have been more right. The sky was so confused. There was steam coming off of the lake, making it look a weird upside down tornado. I took a LOT of photos and this is one of the better ones. Mainly because of the sheep. They come and visit every morning. It’s pretty great. This art is my interpretation of this beautiful Peabody estate, our Summer family business with a bar, restaurant, and B & B. We would travel from Rockville, MD, To spend magical summers here. I have many teenage memories of this beautiful home and know I was too young to appreciate it. I was charged with giving historical tours to busloads of tourists and doing some chambermaiding for guestrooms. My older brothers and sisters bartended and did other jobs. My mom worked tirelessly, and my dad was king of the castle, driving between NY and MD and running his Ham radio electronics business. Forever entrepreneurs! Great memories, but genuinely underappreciated by me! I was off to the US Army a day after my 18th birthday, so my Lake George summers ended there and my family eventually sold the home. Usual morning. Running to appointments. I get back to the car and I can't find the parking ticket that I'd need to get out. The usual question surfaces, "Where did you last see it?" That's when this realization struck me. That question is such a failed opportunity. Sight is one of the 5 classical senses that we posses but knowing myself I know that I rely on touch and sound more than sight. So instead I asked myself 'When do you remember last touching the cardstock parking ticket with my finger?' I thought about it and that was a much cleared memory to recall. As I was leaving the appt office and the automatic doors opened I recalled flicking the edge of the parking ticket with my finger in cadence with my walking pace. So I only had a 30 ft (10 m) to contend with which was a much easier problem to solve. Turns out it was laying flat in one of my short pockets. Lesson here is... next time walk to the appointment? 🎶 🎻 Last week when I was at my parents’ house, I took my old viola out of its case. I hadn’t touched it in about 25 years (I know, I know— it needs some TLC and I’m on it!). But this was oddly appropriate if you’ve read my latest book, The Color of Sound. 🎻 It needs new strings and the bow needs a complete overhaul as well, but it’s still there. It has stories yet to tell and songs yet to play, just like the instruments in The Color of Sound. 🎻🎶 This #viola was used when I got it in the early 1990s… who knows what adventures it had already been on before I played it!? Once I get this one back in shape, I plan to donate it to someone who can play it regularly. Instruments need to be played. Song: Six Shots Artist: Sam Smith Album: Gloria (Apple Music Edition) [2023] Genre: Pop Composers: Sam Smith, Loshendrix, Nez, Ray Keys & nami Six Shots This song has a very smooth and seductive progression, with deep cyan blue hues in the strings (linework) and the vocals (phthalo blue). The beat has a resonance with a certain sonic viscosity that generates the drippy forms depicted in the bottom left. The guitar creates much of the visual friction which is the cobalt blue atmosphere that drives the more prominent blues aesthetic on this track compared to the other tracks I’ve painted on this album this so far this year. It has a similar form in it to SZA’s “Love Language,” which looks like a swaying rope bridge, and not surprisingly they have the same subgenre of R&B, slow tempo music with guitars and strings driving the more prominent forms in the composition. I will be finishing both albums this year, so stay tuned. *synesthesia? Synesthesia is a rare neurological phenomenon where the stimulation of one sense/cognitive function triggers that of another separate and unrelated sense/cognitive function. I have grapheme-color synesthesia and Chromesthesia, meaning I see color through letters, numbers, and sound frequencies.
