Here in the garage freezing my ass off making gorgeous cuts of pork for the year from a local pig from Goulds (thank you Hector!). Im halfway done so I thought it’s the best time to have one of our brews #bogandbarrens Sweetgale & Cranberry made in collaboration with @quidividibrewery. Some of this pork will be mixed with this years moose and our beer to make the most juicy beer brats!. Read a post this morning about a group that are breaking down a whole cow for a year’s worth of local beef. I am in total agreement with them that we have lost touch with where our food comes from. It wasn’t that long ago our families raised animals and had gardens for the sole purpose to feed themselves for the year. A root cellar was in every yard or basement and most everyone who fished knew how to split, salt & dry it. Canning or bottling was a normal practice. I treasure the fact that I can source local foods such as this pork. And even more thankful that I know how to preserve it and share it with family and friends. Even if my wool sock and hat wearing ass is freezing off in my garage. It’s all worth it! Sweetgale, Myrica gale. I remember the first time I found this shrub, in the dormant season, and I was totally stumped. None of the twig keys at my disposal had included it, and I think it was some Pacific Northwest key that ultimately clued me in. These are the flower buds, which remind me of pupal casings - a characteristic that is mentioned in zero keys 😄. The whole plant is amazingly fragrant, but the fruits are especially spicy, even through the winter. It is a characteristic shrub of what some people refer to as “poor fens” but which others might call bogs or boggy shorelines or other acidic, bog-qualified habitats. The foliage has a distinctive bluish-green color that reminds me of saltmarshes (another useless idiosyncratic attribute unique to my mind).
