I find that I'm often influenced by the light levels and prevailing weather conditions outside the studio when I'm painting especially in the winter months. Another tornado study! This one is studied from Pecos Hank's video: it's from Texas in 2022, showcased in 'TOP 10 CLOSE TORNADOES'. With licensing and all, I hope it's okay. I didn't include the fence posts, poles, a truck etc. I put it on the back burner for about a year because I had doubts about how good it looked. Thankfully, I picked up some rake brushes from Devin Elle Kurtz's Gumroad and it helped everything along! I would be at a loss without them and the foliage brushes. I loved painting the clouds! I had a lot more trouble with the foreground grass. I still don't think it looks perfect but it's fine for now. I can always come back to it, as I often do. I honestly don't remember if I eyedropped the colours when I first worked on it. It's tornado season as of the time of writing. I've been watching lots of videos on them. Their raw destructive power and the devastation they leave behind is at odds with their beauty. I've always been fascinated by them but find them terrifying. Overall, I'm very happy with this! It would be nice to paint some more tornadoes soon. “Fathomless” Acrylic on Board 77 x 57 cm A painting created in the Spring yet inspired by Cornish coastal storms of the Winter months. I’d say this painting was a joy to create but that would be a bit of a lie … As an artist you definitely have to trust in the creative process …. there were definitely points in the painting of this piece where I had to chant that out loud to keep going and not throw it out the window! I was experimenting with a dark base layer to make the glacial tones of the waves pop and it just wasn’t playing ball. I initially mixed the paints far too quickly so was left with a flat grey / blue mess of paint that looked like a toddler had been loosed on the canvas! A bit of perseverance and a willingness to start over with the painting paid off in the end and I am more than happy with this dark and stormy painting. “The Bedlam Ballet” 11”X14” Oil on board. . I am an Okie. Born and bred. I have an extra strand of DNA for weather sensitivity. Until you experience or witness this chaotic ballet, you’ll never understand the magnitude of violence a Red Dirt dancer performs. It’s captivating. It’s horrific. The beauty of it all gut punches you and raises the hairs on your arms. . My first vague experience, brought into detail by my mama, when i was 4 years old, whilst playing a 45rpm of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” by Elton John and Kiki Dee all morning. Apparently there was a tornado in our neighborhood and mom was trying desperately to pry my body from the little white and orange plastic GE record player to take cover in the hall bathroom tub. Our neighbor to the south lost their roof during the struggle. That’s the power of music. . Second time, probably at age 8, we were visiting Grandma Blair in Coffeyville, KS. My pop looked out the backdoor and the most beautiful funnel was framed in the doorway. The whole family peacefully watched, what felt like eternity, as it teetered in one place. Which way was it gonna go? Taking cover wasn’t a “thing” until last minute. It was an opportunity to play chicken. It was an opportunity to cheat death. . 7 years ago, my wife on a dive trip in Palau. as she was heading back she called me from Hawaii. It must’ve been around 11PM CST. Sailor, my daughter, was asleep. Thunder and lightning ensued during the call. No big deal. Except when our 1950s single pane widows started to breathe heavily in and out. Ended the phone call quickly to check outside. I could not see past the front porch. The rain was coming down that hard. I scooped up my kid and we crammed our bodies with our cat into a hall closet. That was the most scared I had been with a tornado. We took a direct hit. Lost a back patio. The area of town looked like a bomb exploded. I heard the train coming. Could not get out of the way. . I am an Okie. I’ve been baptized in cyclones. Or should i say, dunk tanked in funnels. I know bad weather. Expect to see more “bad weather” from me.
