VCUarts Qatar will be in Venice on June 6 for an alumni panel discussion, titled, “A Home Anew - Art as a Refuge: The Contemporary Creative Scene in Qatar.” Hosted by VCUarts Qatar and featuring alumni Othman Khunji, Sara Al Shafai, and Majdulin Nasrallah, “A Home Anew” will explore the power of art in shaping and experiencing the notion of home and cultural identity. It will highlight the significance of the past in shaping the future through diverse narratives from artists who, whether national or foreign, call Qatar home. The theme is responsive to the 2024 Venice Biennale, titled, “Foreigners Everywhere” - and the event is part of the Art for Tomorrow 2024 program. The panel is an extension of the work presented during VCUarts Qatar’s 25th anniversary alumni exhibition at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, titled, “this Sand is made of Stars/this Sea is made of Pearls” which sought to emphasize the importance of the past in shaping the future, focusing on elements of Qatar’s unique landscape and heritage. The Moderator will be Dr. Hesperia Illadou, the Director of the Museums & Exhibitions Study Society in Venice. Named after a passage in the Book of Isaiah calling for leadership, the generation ship serves humanity in the face of the man-made environmental and political destruction of Planet Earth. The dimensions of the ship allow for controlled population growth, ensuring the survival of future generations. This grand, open-ended journey will continue for eons, encapsulating utopian and dystopian elements in equal measures. The ship’s creator, Yael Bartana, works within the framework of Jewish mysticism, the Kabbalah. Julien Creuzet presents an immersive installation that initiates a dialogue between the imaginary founders and myths of our hybrid societies. In his work, water, seas and oceans serve as vehicles for his vision of history, movements of people, ideas and forms. The references he draws from different geographies, around the Caribbean, Latin America and West Africa, have their echoes on the European continent and in Venice. Julien Creuzet invites us to broaden our focus and see the French Pavilion as a space of mobility, visibility and rediscovery. NATHAN COHEN - for BEYOND THE SKIN Through our skin we sense the world at large and also what is contained in our body. This includes the brain, the organ that processes the stimuli we receive and enables us to make sense of our environment. Beneath our Skin explores what happens in the basal ganglia of our brain at the neuronal level as a stimulus generates a momentary impulse. It also reveals what we can see through an electron microscope that extends our ability to observe details at high magnitude of the intricate structures of the neuron cells and how they connect. Through a process of layering of multiple images taken at different fractions of depth within the brain tissue it has been possible to create a video sequence of this journey. Venice Biennale 2024 Day 1, so many amazing, mind-bending, colourful, dark, beautiful, scary, educational…works of art to see! I visited the two main exhibition places, Arsenale and Giardini and my mind was completely overflowing by the end of the day. Back for more tomorrow!

RAFI CARASSO - for BEYOND THS SKIN Rafi pierces human skin and looks inside. As a neurologist, he often treats pain with acupuncture. The skin reflects an inner mental image of the person, emotional experiences and history. Some diseases of the nervous or the mental systems manifest themselves in the skin. In diseases such as polyneuropathy, neurodermatitis, autoimmune disorders and in stressful situations, there are hair loss, discoloration of nails, appearance of rash and sores. Sometimes the skin hairs are standing up or the face blushes due to hormonal changes. In medicine, Rafi confronts the problems of pain or suffering of his patients, while carefully guided by the anatomy. In art, he breaks free and challenges the formal order of therapy. He sculpts diverse works of the body, with an emphasis on the skin in particular. On June 22–23, I went to the Venice Biennale for the first time. Since there wasn’t much time, we visited the Giardini and Arsenale areas and the Estonian pavilion, which was outside the main Biennale area. Overall, those two days were incredibly inspiring and interesting! I saw so many different techniques and styles and of course, discovered more of Venice as well! Most memorable pavilions were definitely German (2,10), Japan (3), and Estonian (1,8). The most emotional the Ukrainian pavilion and I just loved Xiyadie’s paper cutouts (7). However all the artworks at the Biennale were amazing! I could have spent hours watching the videos and admiring the installations!
