Prompt 7 of the #wildlifewednesdaychallenge highlighed the Endangered Chacoan Peccary, and tho I'm late, after finding such a cute picture, I just had to participate😍🤭. The Chacoan Peccary, locally known as Taguá, has a body similar to a warthog, and a bristly-looking coat. They stand at about 100cm high and weigh between 30-40kg. They are currently listed as Endangered on the Red list and have managed to have their name added to the list of Lazurus Species. That is a list of animals fortunate enough to find themselves brought back from the dead. Long thought to be extinct by Western scientists, this pig-like mammal was rediscovered in 1971. However, numbers are critically low due to habitat loss (deforestation/illegal logging), disease, and overhunting. Lifespan- on average 17yrs Golden lions are known for their bright reddish hair and the extra long hair around their face. They spend most of their day eating fruits, nectar, bird eggs, insects and small vertebrates. Females can have up to four babies. Other females will give up their chance to breed to help raise bigger liters. Meet Notiomastodon platensis. Despite its appearance, this is no elephant, but rather a gomphothere, a lineage of proboscideans defined by enamel-coated tusks in many species, cusped molars (similar to mastodons), smaller foreheads, and tusks in their lower jaws (for older species). Notiomastodon ruled nearly all of South America, with fossils being discovered from as north as Colombia 🇨🇴 to Brazil 🇧🇷, to Argentina 🇦🇷 and Chile🇨🇱. This huge range tells us that this was a very successful and adaptable species. They lived from the middle Pleistocene all the way up to the early Holocene, with indisputable dates of 8-11,000 years marking their extinction. These animals stood up to 2.8 m (~9 ft) at the shoulder, and had a weight of anywhere between 2-7 tons. Their tusks were straight or slightly curved upwards, and thiq, probably weighing close to, if not more than, 45 kg (100 lbs). Their teeth were the secret to their success. Being generalists allowed them to enjoy nearly all of South America’s rich greenery. Their diet shifted regionally, and possibly even seasonally; grasses, flowering plants, ferns, weeds, etc. They lived alongside so many other faunas at the time, including sloths, Smilodon, bears, pampatheres, toxodons, liptoterns, glyptotheres, caimans, anacondas, macaws, storks, and literally thousands of other birds; capybaras, tapirs, etc. Notio was probably that one guy that everyone knows or has seen, and is cool with. I felt that.
The family Megatheriidae was a pretty interesting family of sloths. It hosted not only some of the largest, but one of the smallest of the ground sloths. 1-2 : Eremotherium eomigrans and its huge hand. This species is currently only known from Florida in the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene. The second largest of thr genus. It also had 5 fingers on its hands, a primitive trait in sloths, as usually one or more digits are absent in the later sloths, like in E. laurillardi, which only has 3 digits (3-5). 3-4 : Eremotherium sefvei and speculative hand. Only known from a femur described in 1997, it might just be a juvenile or subadult of Eremotherium laurillardi. The smallest of its genus. 5-6 : Diabolotherium nordenskoldi, the smallest of the family. This species had arboreal adaptations such as joints and limbs capable of a greater range in motion than other ground sloths and hooked claws. Meet Megatherium americanum, arguably the most famous and recognizable ground sloths. * They lived from the Pleistocene up until the Holocene, with some of the youngest dated fossils being around only 11,000 + years old. They inhabited the temperate grasslands, woodlands and other open habitats of southern South America, including the beautiful Pampas region. * They reached similar sizes to Eremotherium laurillardi. However, some finds of individual Eremotheres flat out trump other sloths and represent some of, if not the largest Xenarthrans ever. * Man, check out the hands on this thing! When drawing and studying sloths, one of the strangest things about them to me are their hands and feet. Megatherium is missing its “thumb” (digit I), but retained 2-5, with digit 5 being reduced to a clawless, vestigial pinkie. On digits 2-4 sat ~8-10 inch-long claws that were no joke. Curl-crested Araciri - Another cute bird that I had not heard of before and immediately loved it as soon as I saw its photo to paint it for #birbfest2024 challenge. This bird belongs to the toucan family and has beautiful curled glossy feathers on its crown. These birds are found in parts of Bolivia, Brazil, Peru in the tropical moist forests. They are omnivores and eat mainly fruits but sometimes eat eggs and nestlings. They are social birds and quite popular as pets. I really enjoyed learning about this pretty bird!
