Lick of Paint was established by Peachzz and Alastair aka @neckofthewoodstudio and will be making a number of appearances this year building up to a proper street art festival next year! Today they were at @alder_bar_sheff for @gettogetherfest and were joined by the amazing @ellespaint who was creating a beautiful mural live in the beer garden 🤩 Elle created the stunning painting of Joan of Arc that can be seen on London Road, one of the most popular murals I’ve ever posted, so it was a real treat to meet Elle and see her at work this afternoon 🤩 Alastair and Megan were also running a little screenprinting workshop where you could print a @gettogetherfest poster, it was great! Today @sheffieldtheatres are having a huge costume sale at the Crucible! The queue this morning stretched right up to the winter gardens, but it’s calming down a bit now! They’re selling so many costumes from so many varied productions, to create space and to raise a bit of money. There are clothes from every time period, military uniforms, Wild West costumes, shoes and boots, hats, and the prettiest dresses. Lily James’ beautiful dress from Othello (one of my favourite productions) is on sale at the bargain price of £150! There is a lot of stuff for only £1, everything is really cheap. I got a huge WW2 RAF style coat for only £20! There are costumes from Wizaed of Oz, Life of Pi, Annie Get Your Gun, White Christmas, Skys Edge. Something for everyone! Doors are open until 4pm so if you fancy owning a medieval wench’s outfit or an RAF flying jacket, maybe a tiny burlesque costume, then head on down! Our new exhibition, Sheffield Stories: Caribbean Footsteps has allowed us to collect stories from people from the Windrush era and the Windrush Generation before this firsthand testimony has gone. 💐 We worked with a group of co-curators from the African Caribbean community to pull this together and the exhibition includes stories and objects that the community co-curators felt needed to be told. The co-curators are all are community campaigners, historians, knowledge seekers, and sharers of Sheffield’s history and heritage: Ursula Myrie, founder of Adira, a Black-led mental health and well-being organization; Clinton Mckoy a community Trustee and community enabler; Leroy Wenham, photographer and local Trustee (photographed here); Simon Jones, Educator and family historian; Ruth McDonald, active community facilitator (photographed here); Zara Makinta, Marketing Executive, and the late Mark Hutchinson. 43 Collegiate Crescent is more than 125 years old and has been linked with one of the city’s oldest, amateur sporting clubs ever since. The Rustlings Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1883 at Endcliffe Park, named after the road where it was located. The club moved to Collegiate Crescent in 1888. It is Sheffield’s oldest lawn tennis club and a founding member of the Sheffield & District Lawn Tennis Association. Times have certainly changed since those early days. The five courts on the corner of Collegiate Crescent and Victoria Road have since been fully renovated to all weather courts, yet the ‘Lawn’ in the club’s name has been retained. They also have 3 floodlit courts. The club hosts Sheffield & District league games and offers coaching to players of all ages and abilities. Do you play tennis?

Henry Wigfall & Son Ltd. were dealers of all sorts. They sold televisions and radios from their store at Fitzalan Square, a shop which has sadly been demolished, furniture at Attercliffe Road and from here, at 34-36 Middlewood Road in Hillsborough, they dealt in cycles and parts. Wigfall’s had been trading here since at least 1947 and were still here by the late 1970’s. It wasn’t their only bicycle shop either. They also had premises on Rutland Road and on The Moor. Since then, the Halifax Bank has used this address as their Hillsborough branch, moving from across the road at number 57.

Another listed Glossop Road building is this former Lloyd’s Bank at number 340. Built in the 1840’s, it was restored in the late 1900’s, retaining its exterior brick and stonework, its wooden doorcase and eaves. These houses were built for the professional class and this is reflected in directory entries from the early 20th century. For example, in 1905, John Broadley B.S. Lond. F.R.C.S was living here followed by fellow surgeon John Stokes M.A., BSc, LL.B two decades later. A year after the war, Charles Parsons, an ophthalmic optician, resided here, continuing the medical link to the building. Many of these houses had links to the city’s hospitals, such was their proximity to the Children’s and Jessop’s Hospitals.

I had a fun afternoon checking out the 999 Day on @sheffieldmoor! Town was heaving, which is good! There were lots of emergency services vehicles on display, old and new (the old ones courtesy of @nes_museum), and displays from the police, fire and ambulance service, as well as others like the RNLI and Edale Mountain Rescue. It was great! So on Valentine’s Day this year I stole this little piece outside the town hall. I’ve just walked past it and seen that someone has actually taken me up on it and put there for love ones on the tree. I had a great evening with my dad seeing @martinsimpsonmusic performing live in Firth Hall 😊 Martin’s finger-picking guitar playing is so skilled and intricate, it’s a real treat to watch 🤩 He played a number of songs from his new album “Skydancers” including the title track about hen harriers that was commissioned by Chris Packham! Last night was such a celebration at Weston Park Museum! 🎉🎉🎉 We were really delighted to welcome the guests of our brilliant community co-curators to mark the opening of the new Caribbean Footsteps exhibition, which they’ve created in the museum’s Sheffield Stories gallery. Over the course of the evening the co-curators took to the stage to introduce the exhibition, and we were also really pleased to be joined by @colinmcfarlaneofficial from the @j4windrush campaign and Councillor Dawn Dale. There were also performances from the brilliant Sheffield Community Gospel Choir, who raised the roof with their beautiful voices. A HUGE thank you to our community co-curators and everyone who spoke, performed and joined us on the night. Urumchi Uyghur Restaurant at 255 Glossop Road serves Uyghur cuisine, food from the ethnic group native to the northwestern province of Xinjiang, China. Replacing Jin Ding, another Chinese restaurant, the eatery occupies a grade II listed building that dates to around 1820. Built of iconic red bricks, synonymous with Georgian architecture, the corner property was formerly residential before being used as a commercial unit in the 20th century. Directories from 1947 show that Maurice Parkin, a merchant tailor, was listed here, whereas it was the Associated Heat Services (Central) Limited in the 1970’s. Presumably, the introduction of Chinese restaurants to Glossop Road came decades later! Have you eaten here?

An image to strike fear into every Sheffielders heart! The Snog, has gone 🙈 @petemckee’s iconic artwork on the side of @faganssheffield has been completely removed 😭 The artwork was painted in 2013, but over the years the wall has deteriorated, Photo 3 shows the condition it was in last month. So the wall has been completely re-rendered and repainted. Fear not though! Redmires Reservoir on the edge of Sheffield is a haven for wildlife. I’ve seen lizards and lapwings up there before, and this time I was lucky enough to see curlews (Photos 1-2) and oystercatchers (Photos 3-6) 😍 According to the RSPB: “the Curlew is the largest European wading bird, found on estuaries in winter and moors in summer. Look for its down-curved bill, brown upperparts, long legs and listen for its evocative, bubbling, call.” Sadly curlew numbers have been declining: “In 2015, Curlews were added to the Red List on the UK Conservation Status Report. Red is the highest conservation priority, with species on this list needing urgent action. Curlews are struggling, with big declines in breeding populations and ranges. They urgently need our help.” The Oystercatcher is a large, stocky, black and white wading bird. It has an orange-red bill and reddish-pink legs. The RSPB says “Because it eats cockles, the population is vulnerable if cockle beds are overfished. They breed on almost all UK coasts. During the last 50 years, more birds have started breeding inland.” I was surprised to see them, but I think they eat worms and things too. No it’s not a rat, it’s a water vole! Yesterday at Redmires Reservoir I spent some time watching the beautiful water voles that live in the area 😍 They’re an endangered species these days, and Redmires is one of the few places you can see them thriving in the area. The water vole is the UK’s fastest declining mammal. The population fell from its estimated pre-1960 level of around 8 million to 2.3 million in 1990, to 354,000 in 1998, and to around 220,000 in 2004. The decline is partly attributed to the American mink, an aggressive predator of the vole, together with unsympathetic farming and watercourse management which destroyed parts of the water vole’s habitat 😔 In 2008, the UK Government announced full legal protection for water voles. This makes it an offence to disturb, damage or obstruct their breeding places. It's not been a great season for Sheffield football, despite Wednesday's great escape. The Blades have been relegated from the Premier League with a record total of goals conceded and Wednesday endured the worst ever start to a Championship campaign. Fortunately, they turned this around and ensured their survival on the last day of the season. On a more positive note, Sheffield's two professional teams averaged more than 56,000 spectators between them despite their lowly league positions, a credit to the city and its footballing traditions. Furthermore, we can all look forward to a Steel City Derby next season. The question is, who will finish the higher of the two clubs?

I had such a gorgeous walk around Redmires Reservoirs yesterday 😍 They’re still well within the Sheffield boundary, just 15 minutes drive from my flat (and some people think Sheffield is ugly!). It was so beautiful and peaceful. I saw some water voles, curlews, oystercatchers, and the cutest little goslings, photos will follow! But I have included a couple of canine friends that I met 🐶 The three reservoirs at Redmires are named Upper, Middle and Lower and were built between 1833 and 1854 to provide clean drinking water to Sheffield, via an open water course to the Hadfield Dam in Crookes, following the devastating Sheffield cholera epidemic of 1832. I think it’s safe to say that @evpregbros are in safe hands with their new singer Kieran Wardle! He absolutely smashed his first gig with them last night at the Hallamshire Hotel (@petemckee: “it’s a rehearsal not a gig!”) Previous singer Big Shaun (an absolute legend) left some very big shoes to fill, but if Kieran was nervous it didn’t show at all. Everyone in the room was on his side, and anyone who’d seen him fronting @hot.soles.uk were confident that he would fit into the Brothers just perfectly 😊 They ran through all the old classics like Chip Pan, Hendos, 69 To Rotherham, No Oven No Pie, plus some great new songs including “You’re Yorkshire” which I’m sure will be played at all of their future gigs as it was an instant classic 🕺🏻 The Brothers play a second rehearsal/warmup gig at the @hallamshire_hotel tonight which I’m sure will be just as successful. Incidentally, the drummer in the band is @realnickbanks who last played that venue with Pulp in 1991!
