‘Cliffe Creek’, screenprint, 77cm x 77cm, two versions, each an edition of 4. This is a picture looking across Cliffe Creek (near Gravesend) at low tide with London Gateway container terminal on the horizon. The inter-laced valleys of mud weaving across the creek are amazing. In version 1 (first picture) I’ve deliberately lightened the tones of the mud flats and in version 2 the tone is close to what I saw. Uí Néill (Tullyhogue Fort)'. Tullyhogue Fort, in Co. Tyrone is the inauguration site of the powerful Uí Néill clan. A large inauguration stone once set in the centre of the rath. The new king would be seated on this stone, while a shoe was either thrown over or held above his head. For good fortune?! The stone was smashed by English forces, to symboliclly end the Uí Néill authority. This is meant to be a winter print, dark blue in colour. With snow. But Im not feeling very festive with the great weather we've been having here. This week’s @funfridayartclub prompt is “SEASIDE!” This was a mega quick one tonight, but I work in a seaside town and this prompt really resonated with me. The town has a small run of beach huts but the council are currently building some public toilets just off the beach that are designed to look like beach huts… best looking public toilets I’ve ever seen. This print isn’t a portrait of public toilets… but they certainly put beach huts firmly in my mind 😅. For those of you who are not British, beach huts are a tradition… they’re basically little sheds by the beach used to get changed, chill out, have a cuppa tea etc. I believe that they can be rented in some places… in other places these little sheds can be bought, often for thousands of pounds 🤯. They tend to be very brightly coloured hence the colour gradient of the print. Today’s @dailyartchallengebylou prompt is “PEACOCK!” One day I’ll do a print of a full peacock, tail and all 🦚 but in the meantime I thought I’d try reprinting this block which I did back in November ‘22, this time on heavy rag paper. I surprised myself with the colours on this print, first time round. I took a punt on a blue green colour gradient in an attempt to capture the peacock’s iridescence and I was chuffed at how well it worked. Animal ABC - I purposely made sure I included plenty of marine creatures in this, and that there was a mix of obvious creatures as well as a few slightly more unusual ones too. This lino cut actually became one of my most personal designs to date. There is a lot of significance to me for each of the creatures I chose. (I have just restocked these!)

Day 87 of the #100day project. Today's print has been made on dry paper which is something I rarely do, but it was late. This print is from inked up bits of papery rubbish that were lying around in my studio when I realised I'd not made anything during the day, and I'm pleasantly surprised given my haste and it's simplicity. It has definite map like qualities. And once again I've learned something as being able to create that deep dark black so simply could be useful in the future. I love seeing how some of my older prints look on different papers and I’ve been meaning to see how my “DAVE” print looks on the antiqued rag paper. I thought the combination would work quite nicely and I’ll be honest, I love how it looks 😅. I made the original print nearly three years ago and it’s based on a little watercolour picture I did the year before during the first lockdown for a daily drawing challenge. I’m quite fond of my pictures during that time, I rediscovered art and experimented with different techniques which eventually led to me discovering linocut. I’m probably in a minority but I’ve been so busy lately that I’d welcome another lockdown… though preferably without a pandemic sweeping the world. Today I have been printing starlings and wrens. Both of these have been out of stock for ages now so it feels good to have them back again! I have also realised that I am coming to the end of the starlings edition. I can’t say I’m too sad to think I will probably only ever print them one more time. I’m quite relieved actually. They’re a bit of a pain to print, hence why they are always out of stock for so long!

A theme that runs through all my work is my interest in connecting with nature by bringing out the unique qualities of the natural materials I work with. The foraged pigments I often work with have a depth of colour and physical texture that one can’t achieve with synthetic pigments. The grain of the woodblocks, or here the tiny granules within the textured limestone that I use to create the image leave marks that hint at the history of how the image was created. My work focusses on human experience and identity, and these marks remind us that we ultimately all share a common origin and connection with nature. I’m particularly enjoying the mark of the vein in the stone in this lithograph. Many printmakers would discard this stone as imperfect, but I love this wee reminder that it is all our own little imperfections and insecurities that make us beautiful.
