ISABELLA FORTUNA ⛵️ We are delighted that the Isabella Fortuna will return to the festival this year! Always great to welcome the crew from Wick, back to Portsoy! Built by James Weir in Arbroath, traditional sailing Fifie, the Isabella was launched in 1890. With an overall length of 45 feet, 13 feet 9 inches beam and a draught of 6 feet, she was powered by two big lug sails, a jib and five oars and was intended for line and drift-net fishing. Skipinnish will celebrate their 25th Anniversary next year and alongside two flagship shows, will perform at a select number of smaller events in 2024, chosen by the band for special reasons. Our library! I've not shared this side of the library before. It's filled with some of my favourite books and Nick naks. I wanted to create an eclectic mix of books and things I cherish. Quite a few of the nick naks are gifts from my mum, hubby, Granny's, or much missed Grandma. I also picked up things from @peapodaberdeen @vinted, #portsoyboatfestival The shelves old scaffolding boards in walnut and the fittings are industrial L shaped spray painted black.
Our amazing History at Durn House! If you didn't see we shared a part of our history here a short while ago and we thought we'd share some more with you to show the vast stories behind these grand doors. We would like to tell you about Sir Thomas Menzies, as he was the second owner of the original Durn Estate, and his son (also called Thomas) succeeded to Durn in August 1593, and became provost of Aberdeen. Sir Thomas has been credited with finding the famous ‘Kellie Pearl’. The Kellie Pearl is the largest freshwater pearl ever discovered in the 2,000-year history of the Scottish pearl industry, and it was later presented to King James VI, who got the rare jewel incorporated in the Scottish Crown, together with other pearls, rubies, diamonds and amethysts already on the crown. The crown was subsequently used for the coronation of Charles I in 1633 and Charles II in 1651. The Crown was also used at the late Queen Elizabeth 2 laying in state in Edinburgh. GLENGLASSAUGH WHISKY LAUNCH 📍Portsoy We had the most magical evening with @glenglassaugh a wee while back to celebrate the launch of their new whisky portfolio 🥃 We were welcomed onboard the legendary Reaper who was up north for @stbfportsoy and enjoyed an evening of food and drams ⚓️ @kiltedchefcraig cooked up an absolute storm from Thai spiced Cullen skink and langoustine to marinated beef cheek, with each plate paired perfectly to one of the new whiskies 🍴 Our favourite dram was the Portsoy - which was fitting given our location - and I actually ordered Aidan a bottle for his birthday last weekend so that we have a wee momento from this perfect evening ✨ Craaaazily, my grandad worked on this very ship when she was up in Shetland in the 60s, so it was incredible sharing stories with the crew and delving into my family history ⛵️ Thank you so much again to @glenglassaugh and @wearespey for having us, and to @conorgaultphoto for the incredible photos, slainte 🥂 . . . #press #glenglassaugh #portsoy #portsoyboatfestival #reaper #whisky #dram #scotland
SPIRIT OF THE FESTIVAL 🥃 If you missed out on getting your very own bottle of the festival 30th anniversary whisky in the food Fayre, it is still available to buy on the Spirits Embassy website https://thespiritsembassy.com/products/portsoy-boat-festival-2023. This blended Scotch Whisky has been matured in Bourbon/American oak casks and is fresh and fruity, with lots of apple and pear notes, praline and milk chocolate with a hint of orange zest. It is smooth and vibrant on the palate with a lovely fruit burst, creamy and soft. Just a slice of our history here at Durn House. With many more amazing stories to come in the future! ... From an almost derelict state, Durn House was transformed over a six-year period in to the seven-bedroom Guest House you see now. Much of the original architecture can be seen throughout the house including the stunning delicate ceiling rose in the hall along the original plasterwork and fireplace. You may be interested to know that the date stone cemented into the rear door stairwell was taken by the Duke of Cumberland in 1746 on his way to the Battle of Culloden. The stone was a trophy from the Episcopalian Chapel which was an ancient church near the bank of the Durn Burn.
