For a few years, every time I went into a bookstore I’d scan the shelves for Margaret Atwood’s first novel The Edible Woman. I could have ordered it online at any time, but I like the tradition of picking up books as they appear, and last October, I found this copy at a @barnesandnoble near me! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Published in 1969, The Edible Woman is an extended metaphor on women’s roles in the midcentury, and how men and women operate under societal expectations. The protagonist is a woman named Marian who gets engaged and then can no longer stomach food, as a kind of allegory on emotional cannibalism and how she feels like she is being consumed by her fiancé. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Edible Woman was published in 1969 but it was written a few years earlier, before second-wave feminism made these issues mainstream. Christine . I’ve got three daughters – my eldest is 22 and then twins who are 18 and leave for university this summer. After 20-plus years all together, it’ll just be me and the dog from autumn, which will be quite a change! . Our family life has always worked around this room and the sofa. We’d have lovely evenings all squashed up watching television together. This room was just full of toys, a tip! The twins were like bear cubs, rolling around. I’d have to pretend a horse was going by to get them to stop. . They still sit down for a hug and kind of just dump their problems like they always have… but now suddenly there’s this full-grown adult sitting on you! I got home the other evening and the house was empty. But as usual they’d done a really funny thing: one of them had opened all the kitchen cupboards just to be cheeky. We have quite a jokey family life. . I've always tried to be the safety net with all the chaos that goes on. Living at home is coming to an end, but being a parent doesn’t end. I get texts like, ‘Can you lend me some money?’ or ‘I’ve got this ache, am I dying?’ You always question if you’re doing the right thing, particularly when it’s just you. But they’ve all independently come to me and said, ‘Some of our friends’ parents are nuts, we’re really glad we’ve got you’. That is lovely. They’ve given me affirmation that I’ve done an okay job." . This series was commissioned for the newly released book "On Family" by Alain de Botton for @theschooloflifelondon , with essays looking at the problems families in all forms face and how to potentially work through these issues, coupled with portraits and interviews with people who have experienced such challenges themselves . Ever experienced that nervous feeling when facing something new? Yeah, it can be pretty uncomfortable, right? But you know what? Pushing through it is often worth it in the end. Recently, I found myself feeling super nervous about moving my whole business from the place where I’ve been for over 5 years. I thought it was going to be very challenging (which it was ahah) with all the things to do, plus I was also shooting everyday apart from two days off… which I used to move out-in 🙈. With so many emotions swirling around, I almost burned myself out. It took me nearly three months to finally re-balance everything when I finally did, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and whispered to myself, "It's going to be okay, Ale. You've got this." Sharing these feelings feels a bit vulnerable, but hey, we're all human, right? I know that many of my clients may feel a little jittery before their photo sessions, and that's totally okay and normal. Sharing some special portaits for my 'Humanities' project. All images are made in a number of imaging techniques from digital imaging, tintype, crystal print, direct positive (+++) and then crafted on vellum, Japanese washi papers, photogravure and even glass prints.
