One of the nearer restaurants in Strandhill, but already a crowd favourite is @stoked_strandhill .With owner Shane being a true local, a true surfer (on any board!), I’m delighted he’s supporting Strandhill Surf Folk, and of course part of it also! This shot is how Shane got his start in Strandhill with food, operating out of the back of his van at the very first outdoor @strandhillpeoplesmarket with @almulrooney giving people a chance to get their own businesses in front of people. Fast forward to now & Stoked is well established above the Strand Bar & overlooks not only the village, but the north end of the beach with it’s amazing outdoor dining space! Although @thewetsuitcompanystrandhill , is pretty new to the village, having taken up residence at the front of the newly opened National Surf Centre last year, Paul who runs it is a former client of mine! I shot his wedding a number of years ago, and he’s from the village. I’m delighted to have the support of The Wetsuit Company Strandhill for Strandhill Surf Folk. It’s parent company you’ll all probably know, @callofthewild_ireland where Eoghan and his team have created one of the best outdoor stores in Ireland. My earliest memories of Call of the Wild is from their first store near Hyde Bridge, across from the old Ulster Bank! I had just got a junior photographer job with Sutton Images and was preparing to move to the UK. I knew I’d be photographing outside in all sorts of weather so I needed a good rain jacket! I remember getting a blue Berghaus jacket which lasted a couple of years, and then I replaced it with a black version, which you can see in this image..it made it’s way around the world covering F1 & typical when I really needed it at random wet races, I didn’t have it with me!! When I was photographing F1 & returned home for a visit in 2003, I headed to Strandhill for a function. There was a little cafe on the seafront, & my now wife, at the time said that was the most amazing location for a cafe & why is it empty? I have no idea who ran it at the time. Fast forward to now and Jane & Myles who own & run @shellscafe had the same epiphany & took up residence in that building and now run the laid back, awesome Shells Cafe! I think my earliest memories of the Walton’s is watching Mick (RIP) and Neil in the early 90’s taking part in Rosses Point’s triathlons. Going to those triathlons every summer was the catalyst for me taking part in triathlons from 2008 on. I got to know Mick & Neil then a little better when the reformed Sligo triathlon club only had 10 members! You don’t become a national surf champion like Shane from @stoked_strandhill here, by not being in the water every chance you can! “Along with the line up through the years, the sand banks are always changing , I remember missing my business studies leaving cert exam because there was a perfect shorebreak on the beach. I probably should’ve tired harder in that subject seeing I’m in business now, but that shorey was good as it gets”. If you ever listen to the local surfers here, one thing we always go on about are the banks! The sand here on the beach is part of the community! I think I’ve said this a couple of times already but Ray here really is the last portrait to be included in the forthcoming exhibition opening on May 29th in @nationalsurfcentre ! Ray has been on my list since day 1, not just because he’s Gearoid’s dad, not just because he’s become known as dad-cam for all his filming of his son! When I first started this surf portrait project in March 2023 it quickly changed into a community surfer project. Last autumn I was surfing the local point, on a good day, a busy day. Getting my fair share of waves already, a set rolled in, I took off on the peak & just in front on the shoulder a grom dropped in…the wave looked good & I knew this kid could surf so I shouted to stay on, he did & so did I, staying in the pocket watching the grom surf ahead of me on the shoulder all the way to the inside. As we both paddled back out, the grom apologised for dropping in…but I just said no problem at all, great wave & gave him a quick fist bump. That grom was Koa here! Surfing…it’s not like riding a bike! Exact words from Neil here as we chatted yesterday prior to getting some portraits for the Strandhill Folk project in glorious light! A born & bred local, one of the few I have photographed, Neil surfed before taking time out to pursue a life in the senior ranks of @sligogaa only to come back to the water again when he hung up the boots. He’s also one of the few people I’d meet kayaking in the bay around here, before some of the local spots became popular! . Back in 2007 when I started surfing, I got my board from Outerpoint but they didn’t have a wettie that fit me. So I ended up getting one online & it was a West brand one for some reason. Low & behold the only other person I’d see in the line up with a West suit was Clodagh! Turns out she used to be a West supported surfer I think! Our connection spans over a decade, and I am grateful for the impact he has had on my life. At times, I view him as the father figure I never had. Our shared experiences have been filled with countless adventures, from memorable trips to Hawaii and challenging big slab pursuits in Japan, to exciting journeys to Sri Lanka and some remote islands. Seeing him healthy and robust at 72 years old, now a father to a one-year-old daughter, brings me immense joy. Although our time together in Hawaii was brief on this occasion, we made the most of it—relieving the longing, sharing a few beers, capturing memories through photography, and engaging in deep conversations about life. I came into triathlon from a swimming background. Like a lot of other guys/girls around my age, I put my time in from about 5 years old, in the over chlorinated Summerhill college pool, with the legendary Sibil Higgins shouting at me until my technique was right! We then split to join the new swimming club and I stayed there until I had enough of the early mornings! My first ever sea swim race was in the 1999 Rosses Point triathlon as part of a relay with legends Daire Mooney on the bike & Dermot McDermott running the 10km...we finished 3rd, with no training or anything!! I swam the 1500m in a speedo as I didn't own a wetsuit at the time…I didn't surf yet so why would I have one!! These days the open water is full of swimmers, in the Point & in the safe spots around Strandhill. But the pool is still where the magic training happens!! The 90's era! I guess you could say this was my era except I wasn't lucky enough to start surfing then! Living near town you had to either have parents who didn't mind driving a lot to Strandhill, or know someone living in Strandhill who had parents picking up your mate in town so you could get a lift in & out! I was in the swimming club at the time so between that & school in Summerhill I knew some guys that surfed, @surferdavido and legend Paul Rennick (RIP). I never knew Colin at the time, but knew he ripped out in the water...& he still does! These 90's guys took what the Byrne brothers were doing & went next level with it! Surfers are very much like photographers…there’s nearly always something wrong with conditions/light! Too much wind, too much sun, wind from wrong direction, too much cloud, swell too big, location not great!! I’ve been lucky enough in my photography career that I’ve got to photograph some absolute young chargers in the lower formula racing. The ones that stand out are @lewishamilton @sebastianvettel @nicorosberg (12 F1 titles between them!). I shot them around Europe before spending time in Macau, Korea & Bahrain F3 races before they went to GP2 at the same time I had to cover it while also doing F1. (Seb Vettel by passed GP2!)
