"Photographs shock insofar as they show something novel. Unfortunately, the ante keeps getting raised - partly through the very proliferation of such images of horror. One's first encounter with the photographic inventory of ultimate horror is a kind of revelation, the prototypically modern revelation: a negative epiphany. For me, it was photographs of Bergen-Belsen and Dachau which I came across by chance in a bookstore in Santa Monica in July 1945. Nothing I have seen - in photographs or in real life - ever cut me as sharply, deeply, instantaneously. Indeed, it seems plausible to me to divide my life into two parts, before I saw those photos (I was twelve) and after, though it was several years before I understood fully what they were about. What good was served by seeing them? They were only photographs - of an event I had scarely heard of and could do nothing to affect, of suffering I could hardly imagine and could do nothing to relieve. When I looked at those photographs, something broke. Some limit had been reached, and not only that of horror; I felt irrevocably grieved, wounded, but a part of my feelings started to tighten; something went dead; something is still crying." Feliz 25 de Abril! This date is celebrated in Portugal as a national holiday – it is the date of the Carnation Revolution, the revolution that led to the fall of the Estado Novo dictatorship in 1974 and resulted in a democratic Portugal. As the soldiers and the population took to the streets to celebrate, carnations were placed in the muzzles of the guns. Luís Branco @lfilipebranco and I made this image on the 25th of April, 2019 at the Obras Art Residency @foundationobras in Evoramonte, Portugal. On Photography by Susan Sontag This originally was not on my book list. I added it last minute, as I was going through my bookcase I pulled it out and it stuck with me. I have an interest in religion and history but I also majored in Photography, have a consistent photo practice, and work in the arts currently. Sometimes it is so engrained in my everyday that I forget it as something I choose to engage with, to learn about, and continue to do. Which is why I’ve chosen On Photography by Susan Sontag. We interact with photo and video now more than ever, and photos are almost never, quite the truth. This is a hard psychological fallacy to shake. To be critical of what we view,and how we view is paramount. Sontag’s book has gone from just being a seminal text of photographers to being something I would recommend to everyone. "Guns have metamorphosed into cameras in this earnest comedy, the ecology safari, because nature has ceased to be what it always had been - what people needed protection from. Now nature tamed, endangered, mortal - needs to be protected from people. When we are afraid, we shoot. But when we are nostalgic, we take pictures." Sontag's peculiar comparison between guns and cameras (pun intended with the reference to both gadgets being used to "shoot") is eerily on point and couldn't have been any truer today, nearly 50 years after the publication of On Photography. In an age where the art of photography is accessible to anyone and everyone with a smartphone, it is interesting to observe how we approach our subjects has transitioned from a meer artistic expression to more of a hunter targeting a prey. The thirst to capture more, the way we sometimes dominate a natural landscape exploiting it en masse for our consumerist expressions, how we have turned everything - from the coffee we drink to the most intimate moments with our loved ones - into a materialistic statement...All of these make photography feel more like a hunter trying to get the maximum out of its kill. I was a bit disappointed in Sontag's writing style, as I felt she sometimes tends to miss that poetic catharsis towards the art (as you would see from writers like Patty Smith) and instead tends to write in a more mechanical, scholarly tone because she looks at it from the viewpoint of a critique and not an artist herself. But I am still impressed in her foresight and deep understanding about the complex dynamics of the subject. On Photography - Susan Sontag During those “stay at home” times I used to listen to several podcasts. One of them led me to Susan Sontag “On Photography”. Thank you, Professor @mundoaureo for so many incredible episodes on @literatura.viral and for talking about Susan Sontag. If you love photography you definitely should read “On Photography”. While reading her book I found out who I am as a photographer. Sontag made me understand why do I photograph. She helped me realising what truly motivates me while photographing. Her words left me overwhelmed. But I really would like to talk about one of the many photographers Sontag cites on her book. I’d like to talk about Diane Arbus. Her intentions on photography caught my attention and I felt desolate when I realised she killed herself when she was 48 years old. Her sensibility made it possible for her to capture the same energy in every single image she made. As her audience, we always have the same feelings when we look to her art. It’s like you can feel her digital there. She photographed pretty different subjects, but her eyes and her camera captured and showed similarities in every single image. Sontag and Arbus are incredible (art is somewhat eternal, this is the reason I used ARE). “the ultimate wisdom of the photographic image is to say: ‘there is the surface. now think—or rather fee, intuit—what is beyond it, what the reality must be like if it looks this way.’” — On Photography, Susan Sontag i’ve had this book by Sontag for quite some time but have just had the opportunity to read it this month. i thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, i finished it a couple of days ago, and i keep coming back to some passages. Sontag’s prose is definitely one of a kind, the kind you may ceaselessly aspire towards (i read this for a class and my professor had the same opinion). her interest in photography is clinical, but it’s obsessive, it’s a vigilant investigation of photography as an art and as an activity. and it’s fitting since making a case for photography doesn’t seem to be Sontag’s intention in this book. Sontag would seem to evaluate one instance, and then refute her previous appraisal the next. in this book, Sontag explores the realism and the surrealism of the photographic image, its edges and its discontents. she invokes Whitman to posit photography as a populist art, a populist way of seeing, and finally (and in turn) as an “American” art. her writing is neither final nor definitive, but rather highly suggestive. you can pause and ponder over every paragraph, it invites you to revisit it sometime, but also it begs frequent and long visitations.
If February is when the real year starts then March is probably when MY reading year starts... I’m on a book-buying ban because of my overflowing physical and digital tbr yet somehow still unable to get through them... these were some books I started on a whim and ended up loving. Especially ‘Essays in Love’; an insightful and very relevant look at the various stages of love and understanding portrayed through the progression of Alain’s own relationship. I also enjoyed ’In Memory of Memory‘ a lot—was completely taken by the idea of putting together someone’s life and history through the objects they leave behind and to have it told in conversation with ideologies such as those of Barthes and Sontag (whose On Photography I also enjoyed and annotated dearly) was very poetic and an incredibly bold exploration of culture and personal memory. I’m trying to get over the ick of my own recorded voice to do video essays for certain books by themes, since I can’t really cram it all into captions or a carousel–let’s see how that develops. This month’s tbr looks promising too! Currently finishing This Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno and also started Rouge (finally) by Mona Awad, so hopefully those are my next reviews.
