My grandson wanted a mouse house for his birthday, and we've been working on this for several weeks. The bark strips, pine cones, and moss are ethically "raised" [as in already d.o.a. when we found them out treasure hunting; no live plants are taken and dried in our projects. [The mice, sadly, are ordered from Amazon, but we NEEDED realistic tiny mice.] He wants a bunch of mica I've collected over the years and acorn caps for the roof, so that's what he'll have. If you want to make similar "faux" birch bark base on your wood, like mine? Use glops of building paste on top of gesso, and a toothed rubber "art spatula" for texture in rounded wavy-shapes. Dry several days. lightly use sides of charcoal stick to color the raised surface. Selectively scribble and rub charcoal in for random markings. [Hands will be FILTHY, and this won't work with gloves, so it's a committment.] Set with spray fixitif. Dry. than a few shots of Tim Holtz brown Distress Spray ink. Dry. Obviously don't let kids do the fixitive and distress spray. There's probably an easy way to do this, but after a few years of faking birch bark, this is what works for me! Last week got very messy, but that’s ok when we have fun! 😉 We made our own marshmallow slime- puffy and stretchy and in the loveliest sweetie colours… and scents. We had cookie scented and peach, strawberry and apple. It was great creating the slime from glue and shaving foam and to watch it transform from sticky to stretchy… Once our slime was perfect, we added some sparkle or pearls at the slime bar and then found or created our very own logo to stick on top. Here’s a super easy, seasonal homemade game that Cosmo and I played in the park yesterday and that you and your little ones can conjure up from from nature’s playground this weekend. Tic Tac Toe/Noughts & Crosses is upgraded to Spots & Smoothies when you play it with conkers.. Things you could do to extend the activity for children of different ages.. 🌰 Wash, dry and polish the conkers (set them up at the table with a bowl of warm water and some cloths/brushes) 🌳 For kids that like counting/stacking, have them arrange them by size, count them, see how many they can stack on top of each other etc. 🌰 Paint/decorate their conkers – sticks could be bound in wool/thread or painted, and conkers could be decorated with acrylic pens, chalk, or stickers. 🌳 Turn them into characters – if you’re feeling really creative then it could become a version of the game with two different sets of people – ie. one set with blue hair, the other with yellow. Stick on some wool, or make a hole in the conker to secure it more firmly. Add faces! 🌰 If you prefer animals to people, do a little creature version of these teams instead. Turn them into spiders, snails, turtles or hedgehogs by using things like pipe cleaners or air dry clay. 🌳 Make a little box to keep their game in – depending on their age/ability they could make an origami box out of paper/card, or simply find a basket/pot and then design a label for their game. If you’ve got more than one kid, get them each to come up with their own designs and name for the game. I bet it’ll buy you at least an hour (and cost you nothing!).. Another completed make! A not so little angler fish. I made the teeth and eyes using the cricut rather than crocheting them as I thought the teeth would look better. I wasn’t keen on this to begin with, but I think the teeth change the look and it looks a lot better. Junk modelling - "pride rock" This is an activity we don't do often enough, but the kids absolutely LOVE it....and it's FREE! I save up empty cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, yogurt pots, packaging material and anything else that's clean and safe for them to use. Then literally give them the box of junk, some glue, scissors, tape and paint and let them loose! Their initial reaction is literally "what do you expect me to do with all this junk?" But within a few minutes the creative juices start flowing and it's lovely to observe their creativity and watch their ideas come to life. Obviously I'm there to help if they need it too. The boys decided to make "pride rock" for their toy lions and they were both so excited to make them and proud of their final result. What will your kids make? We've also recently made a trip to the local scrap store and picked up some bits and bobs which we're hoping to make dolls houses with.
