As many as 988 million birds die each year in the U.S. from window collisions. BirdSafe Maine—a partnership between @maineaudubon, @universityofsouthernmaine, and the Portland Society for Architecture—honors companies, schools, and individuals working to protect birds from window strikes. While no laws require companies to build or retrofit their buildings to make them safe for birds, some Maine companies have taken it upon themselves to invest in bird safety. Along with @llbean, @teammemic, and others, Maine Audubon has recognized Saddleback for excellence in bird safety with the inaugural Bird Safe Maine Award. Saddleback is home to the rare Bicknell's Thrush, a small bird that inhabits dense alpine forests at high elevations. In constructing the new mid-mountain restaurant, The Nest, Saddleback worked closely with Maine Audubon and @daviestoews architecture to design innovative bird deflection screens. From my first encounter with an Indigo Bunting back in 2007 to 2024, this bird will always take my breath away. His blues cascading from deep indigo on the top of his head, falling and running into hues of ultramarine, cobalt, and hints of warm cerulean—magic manifesting a painter’s pallet every spring with his arrival. He only stays for a day or two, visiting my garden feeder before venturing off to raise a new family of heavenly blues. Ever since I first saw an indigo bunting, I have wanted to capture all three primary colored birds that visit in one photograph—bunting, goldfinch, and purple finch. I definitely had a Liz Lemon moment at the Kennebunk plains last weekend - so many different types of sparrows! I ventured out in the evening looking for grasshopper sparrows, but instead was treated to two other life birds - the pictured vesper sparrow and the field sparrow. The little vesper even decided to pose for me in a bush at ✨ golden hour ✨ Vesper sparrows are known for singing into the evening or the “twilight of vespers” hence the name. I think they’re kind of cool, singing lullabies instead of wake up calls. “Can you just uh… scooch over a little that way?” Isn’t it interesting how some totally different creatures are content to exist in the same space? This double-crested cormorant is totally welcome on Turtle Rock™️, it is seen often sunning with the turtles of the pond. However, just across the pond a black-crowned night heron was observed eating a small painted turtle. The corm is a bigger bird, so in my eyes it would make sense that the turtles would fear it. Rare non-cropped bird photo for your feed 🖼️ Instagram bird photography is definitely dominated by closeups of the subject. We want to see the detail of the features, the pupil, individual scales on their legs. I certainly strive for getting as closeup of a shot as I can when taking pictures. That being said, these closeups are kind of unrealistic if you think about it. Rarely do we ever see birds so close in the real world, especially little guys. I think there is value to showing the whole picture, it captures more of the essence of the bird- where it lives, what it eats, who it is. Last week I took a trip to the Caribou Bog in Orono. 1. Osprey. While watching 4 goslings with 2 adult Canada Geese, I spotted this Osprey sitting high in the tree line. It was pure luck to catch him/her diving into the water for dinner! 2. Yellow-Rumped Warbler. Thanks to another birder (@eatbirdlove), we identified this warbler as being of the Myrtle subspecies. According to Merlin, Myrtle” Warblers have a white throat that wraps around below the cheek. It was a joy to capture these little critters on camera. 3. Red-winged Blackbird. They generally stay in lush areas filled with bright green and yellow leaves, so it makes sense the female would be more camouflaged as she will be incubating eggs. Scarlet Tanagers have been exploding onto the scene in Maine over this past week. You've probably heard a neighbor or fellow birder excitedly mention that they've seen one recently. They're more abundant across Maine this year than they have been in the past, with eBird and the MaineBirds Facebook page full of excited posts and pics. We've been lucky to have one male and one female coming to our feeder for the first time ever. Scarlet Tanagers are medium-sized songbirds with fairly stocky proportions. They have thick, rounded bills great for catching insects and eating fruit (which is why I recommend offering mealworms and oranges at your feeders if you'd like to attract one). The head is fairly large and the tail is somewhat short and broad. Males are an unmistakable brilliant bright scarlet red with black wings and the females are a more drab olive/yellow with darker wings and tails. Nonbreeding males may still appear molting from yellow to red. Sir, you’re going to need an interior renovations permit for that 🚧 As listeners of the chickadee episode of the WBB Podcast know, chickadees like to nest in cavities. Usually these cavities are made in dead trees, but may also include old woodpecker holes and man made nest boxes. After picking a spot they’d like to settle down in the interior renovations begin. Chickadees will use their beaks to carve out an ideal home for their young, flying the construction debris a little ways away, then dispersing it. This can be particularly useful when they take up residence in an old dead tree that may not already have a perfectly chickadee sized hole. Even when they’re fixed-uppers dead trees can be quite cozy for these little guys! If you would like to attract nesting chickadees to your yard using nest boxes try adding some sawdust or little wood chips. In Flight Meal // Coastal Maine. This year I finally got to see a natural spectacle I've been hearing about since moving to Maine: the alewife run. Alewives are a species of herring that live out in the ocean but make their way into freshwater lakes and ponds to breed in the spring. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first went to see them, but I definitely wasn't prepared to see the entire stream stuffed full of these fish, all facing into the current and fighting to make their way up and over a small series of cascades that were the last major obstacle before they could get into their breeding pond. Well... it turns out there was one more obstacle. The ospreys, bald eagles, and gulls also got the memo that it was the alewife run, so they were all constantly circling the winding stream in the marsh and occasionally diving down to catch an unsuspecting alewife. It was quite the sight to see at least 4 ospreys, two adult and two juvenile eagles, and a ton of gulls all overhead while thousands of fish made their way through the water in front of me. Warbler or tit? 🤔 Per American Bird Conservancy: Parula is a diminutive form of Parus, which refers to the taxonomic family Paridae — which includes chickadees and titmice. So, Parula effectively means “little titmouse,” even though the Northern Parula is a member of the family Parulidae — the wood-warblers. (Note: Paridae (chickadees) versus Parulidae ie (warblers)). So this is definitely a warbler, the name is just kind of… confusing? A piping plover today on Ferry Beach in Scarborough, Maine. Despite ample signage indicating dogs are not allowed on the beach this time of year, I saw several people with dogs there. Piping plovers are classified as threatened under the endangered species act. Birds view dogs as predators, no matter how friendly we might think they are. And even the mere presence of dogs can scare these birds off of their nests, even if the dog isn't chasing or otherwise acting threatening from our perception. This can cause birds to leave their nests and even abandon them in fear, resulting in nest failure for that season. I watched these two go at it for a solid 10 minutes --- the eagle here is performing a maneuver called wiffling. Wiffling requires two parts: RAPID DESCENT: The eagle dives quickly in a zig-zagging or side-slipping motion. TWISTING THE BODY: During the descent, the eagle may twist its body with its head and neck craned around 180 degrees to maintain eye contact with the osprey. An early morning on the trail... well, close to the trail -- this was along the shore. I love his "pudding" coated beak. This is a Killdear. Funny thing about these guys: The killdeer is famous for its dramatic "broken-wing act." When a predator approaches its nest, the killdeer will pretend to have a broken wing, fluttering away and drawing the predator away from the vulnerable chicks. House finches’ short, sturdy beaks are great for grinding up vegetation and opening seeds.
