Great Cumbrae from the ACP. Great Cumbrae is the larger of the two islands known as The Cumbraes in the lower Firth of Clyde in western Scotland. Glaswegians though more commonly just refer to the island as Millport, after its main town. There is a curling pond near the highest point on the island, in January 2010 it hosted the Dumfries Cup for the first time in 14 years, and in December of the same year it was also available for public use. -Museum of the Cumbraes occupies part of the Garrison, built originally for the captain of an anti-smuggling revenue cutter. -FSC Millport – has an aquarium of sea creatures from the Firth of Clyde, and a museum which tells the story of the sea and of the Clyde area, which is open daily. Cumbrae has a marine climate and can experience gale-force winds from the Atlantic at any time of year; these westerly or south-westerly gales can be severe and destructive. Local wildlife includes owls, polecats, rabbits, common kestrels and the occasional golden eagle and sea eagle, as well as a large seabird population: northern fulmars, great cormorants, Eurasian oystercatchers and many more. Other marine life includes seals, basking sharks, porbeagle sharks and dolphins. The Guardian reported that Cumbrae was no. 8 in British online property searches when lockdown was in force. Largs Pier info along the ACP. It was completed and officially opened in 1834. The cost of the pier was £4275 and was built by the Largs Harbour Company Ltd. The Largs Prom from the north of the pier to Aubery was completed in 1902 and was officially named the Victoria Esplanade. The beach, which is a mixture of sand and shingle, curves gently around Largs Bay, from which there are views out over the Firth of Clyde towards Great Cumbrae Island and the Isle of Bute. The Gulf Stream is said to run nearby and the town has a relatively mild climate. Parts of the seafront are lined with palm trees. The distance between Largs and Millport is just a few miles. No advance booking is necessary on this ferry service. Along the ACP in Largs the huge metal statue of Magnus the Viking awaits. Celebrateing the defeat of the Vikings, the statue was erected in 2013 on the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Largs when the Scots saw off the Vikings who did not return thereafter to Scottish lands. In 1266, following their defeat, Magnus, the King of Norway signed the Treaty of Perth which resulted in the Western Isles and the Isle of Man being surrendered to the Scottish Crown. There are numerous references to Vikings in the town of Largs including street names, the amusement arcade and the of course the Viking who stands outside the Main Street chippie the giant metal statue of Magnus the Viking! There is also more serious commemoration such as the Vikingar, which is an interactive exhibit with storytellers telling Viking tales and myths and the yearly Håkon Håkonsson Lecture (which was inaugurated by the late Magnus Magnusson in 1980). At Vikingar you are entering a troubled time in the history of Scotland. Fierce warriors with fast ships are preparing to slice through the waves towards Scotland.... Along the ACP at Largs. Sir Thomas Brisbane led a local brigade of thousands in the removal of sandstone pillars in the lands of Broomfields which had been erected by private houses to stop all traffic but this was met unfavourably by the town and caused a great "hulla-bullo". Brisbane originally donated Broomfields to the people of Largs and was aghast at the pillars as were many others. Many years ago everybody knew the great citizens of Largs and they were stars and celebrities in their own right around the world. In fact, Lord Kelvin was arguably as well known globally as Stephen Hawkings or Simon Cowell is today. Notable people from Largs include: Daniela Nardini actress was born in Largs. Graham Lyle was brought up in the town. John Sessions, comedian, most known for regular appearances on Whose Line is it Anyway? and QI. Along the ACP on the Largs promenade the war memorial commemorates those from the area who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The war memorial contains lists of the local heroes who fell in the battles of both the First and Second World Wars. Dedicated on the 19 Sept 1921, this impressive memorial stands by the shore in a prominent position overlooking the sea. Sculpted by William Kellock Brown, it is topped by effigies of three men. In the centre of the group stands a kilted soldier with a rifle in his right hand. To his left kneels a sailor, while to his right sits a colonial soldier looking out in another direction. There is also an image of a broken wheel, which may simply represent the battlefield, but is possibly symbolic of the loss of life. A bronze band around the plinth contains the dedication and lists the casualties of the First World War, beneath which is another listing those who died in the Second World War.
