Joy Harjo (born May 9, 1951) is an American poet, musician, playwright, and author. She served as the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold that honor. She was also only the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to have served three terms (after Robert Pinsky). Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Nation (Este Mvskokvlke) and belongs to Oce Vpofv (Hickory Ground). She is an important figure in the second wave of the literary  Native American Renaissance of the late 20th century. I lived half my life in Hawai’i and the other half here in New Mexico spending much of my time with my grandma and my cousins in Taos Pueblo. One of my main reasons I started painting the Pueblo and Pueblo style architecture was because I missed it. It brought me a little closer to home and my family. Recently I haven’t been able to visit as much as I would like because I have two jobs plus having my own work to do. I work seven days a week 50/60 +hrs sometimes but when I paint the Pueblo it reminds me of things I hold dear to my heart and why I do what I do. I’m very thankful for my family both here in New Mexico and in Hawaii. I on the other hand live in a space where much of what I make and see in my work comes from dreams that are ever present. Many come when I am doing my morning walks and being in a calm space of beginning my day. I work at finding calm and peace and begin to create what brings this to me. So, I find that sharing this part of me brings good into the world. I share it in my work and try hard to focus on balance. Leading into Fritz Scholder’s famed “Indian Series”, the artist explored abstraction depicting the natural world. “New Mexico #42” is part of a sophisticated, desirable and finite body of work that Scholder began after moving to Santa Fe, NM to begin teaching at IAIA (Institute of American Indian Arts) in 1964. The stark topography and crisp environment of the Southwest provided a rich creative reservoir for Scholder. He was not alone. New Mexico served as an artistic refuge for many American art legends in the 20th century. Georgia O’Keeffe, Agnes Martin, Marsden Hartley, Richard Diebenkorn and Raymond Jonson were just a few to have discovered immense solitude and inspiration within the cascading vistas of the ‘Land of Enchantment’. Scholder’s abstract artworks evoke a sense of visceral dynamism, blending vibrant colors and bold shapes that transcend the confines of traditional representation. With gestural brushstrokes and a keen eye for composition, Scholder captured the essence of the natural world while imbuing it with a surreal, otherworldly quality. Created a background pattern with a painting I did then found a picture I took of the Pueblo and cropped out everything but the building and layered that on top. I then took a couple colors I liked and sandwiched them in between the two layers. Not sure which color I like more. Deborah shares how memoir writing is a form of familial and historical preservation, and offers advice on having difficult conversations with the real people who appear in our creative nonfiction. Plus, she discusses the value of the low-res IAIA program for both indigenous and non-indigenous writers, offers strategies for sustaining creative energy, and describes methods to avoid falling into a common misstep for MFA students: social comparison. A citizen of the Quechan (Yuma) Nation and Laguna Pueblo, Deborah Jackson Taffa is the director of the MFA in Creative Writing program at the @instituteofamericanindianarts. She is the author of the memoir WHISKEY TENDER and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa.
