First Nations is excited to announce that Delores Churchill, a 2021 Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellow, has written a new book scheduled for release this October. The 95-year-old Haida Native reflects on her life’s journey as a basket weaver in “From a Square to a Circle: Haida Basketry — Delores Churchill’s Memories of Learning to Weave.” Part memoir and part how-to guide, the book shares stories of her life and culture, and her passion as a dedicated teacher to pass on Haida basket weaving to the next generation. As she says in her Luce profile, “My students are keeping this art alive so it will continue long after I am gone. It belongs to all of us.” . . . . . #FirstNations #FirstNationsDevelopmentInstitute #SupportNativeLed #NativeNonprofit #IndigenousLed #Native #NativeAmerican #Indigenous #IndigenousPeople #NativeArt #NativeArts #NativeArtist #NativeArtists #IndigenousCulture #Haida #HaidaArt #HaidaArtist #HaidaCulture #BasketWeaving #HaidaWeaving #NativeAuthor #NativeAuthors #NativeElder #NativeElders

There There .. I chose this book by Tommy Orange based on my participation in the broader bookshelf challenge with Richland Library. This challenge has been an amazing way for me to diversify my reads as an adult. I was able to read a book that I normally wouldn’t have picked up, and learn so much about the complexities, history, and lived experience of natives. .. 10/10 recommend .. #DiversityEducation #SodaCity #SodaCity #AdultReader #mombookclub #mamaknows #ConsciousFamily #ConsciousParents #ConsciousParenting #nativeauthor

REVIEW | WHISKEY TENDER 4.25✨ memoir cw: alcoholism, racism, suicide attempt a compelling memoir that explores the personal accounts of the author and her family, with a weaving of relevant historical events, giving the reader a chance to comprehend the practical impacts of the racism and oppression inflicted on Native communities. it’s a meditation on the push and pull of assimilation, the reckoning of indifference, but also the power of family and culture, and how necessary it is for us to be educated on the realities of the harm that white people have inflicted, and continue to inflict, on Indigenous communities #memoir #bookstoread #nativeauthor #diversespines #bookstagram #bookreview #diversityacrossgenres2024

My memoir, Thunderbird Rising, a story of Resilience, Reconnection, & Empowerment, is the story of my transmutation of the darkness of this life into a magnificent awakening - this is my "how" I made it work for me, despite having to overcome seemingly impossible challenges that began in my childhood. I wrote this book from my own experiences as a mixed Indigenous woman who has had no choice but to walk in two worlds, and often alone, but through that isolation, I discovered the multidimensional aspects of myself and this world, through powerful dreams, visions, and "visits" from my ancestors and our Star Relatives. My story is intended to help others navigate the chaos and confusion that has now become normal for all of us. In it, I hope that you realize that you are not alone - not in this world or in this universe. A limited number of signed copies, paperback version only, are now available directly from me (personalization is possible and encouraged). Order your copy here: www.stephbigeagle.com/thunderbird-rising-book or visit linktr.ee/stephbigeagle. The link is also in my bio. Be aware of scammers. The ONLY way to order this book is from my website, from Amazon, or from authorized retailers. I’m going backwards on this one, but after having consumed #WanderingStars, I had to check out #TommyOrange’s debut novel - which was a #PulitzerPrize Finalist: #ThereThere. In 2018, Obama also put this one on his own reading list - which was amazing! Fascinated by the idea that this first time author who’s essentially my age wrote a novel that garnered all this intrigue and attention. Tres, tres cool. Can’t wait to dive into this one! . . . . . . #nativeamericanauthors #indigenousauthors #indigenousbookstagram #indigenouspeople #indigenous #indigenouswriters #nativewriters #nativeamerican #nativeamericans #nativeamericanwisdom #afroindigenous #bookreview #nativebooks #nativeauthor #nativeauthors #nativeamerican #nativeamericans #nativeamericanwisdom #nativeamericanheritagemonth #nativeamericanhistory #nativeamericanculture #tellthetruth

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Finally finished reading this #WanderingStars book by #TommyOrange. Took a minute - life’s been busy with new puppies by @thesilkiestmillie and trying to take @theadsagency into its next chapter; however, I’m glad to have so randomly come across this book and saw it through to the end. This is the tale of a native family through generations since the #SandCreekMassacre (1864, Colorado) to present day (even including the pandemic) - its struggles with identity, connection to its own “nativeness,” #addiction, suicide, homelessness and all the other trauma that comes from being a people displaced, stripped of its culture and pride. Besides its magnificent storytelling and style, what I appreciate most about this book is the feeling of knowing I’m not alone when it comes to being so very disconnected with our own #alaskannative heritage. The awkwardness and shame that comes from not knowing the language, the customs. Of not even having grown up in Alaska, on #triballands or a #reservation like so many natives at #RES2024 apparently have. I can appreciate the realness expressed of how hard and meaningless life can feel - without resources, without direction or purpose. Especially grateful for the native tidbits shared - like the Indian in the moon story, healing practices through smoke and ceremonies and more. With so much trauma and life stories shared, I wasn’t sure how Tommy would manage to lift us out of that despair into some higher, more enlightened space at the end, but he managed to do it artfully with a letter from one of the family’s youngest. I’ll leave it there for any who decide to pick this book up for themselves. . . . . . . #nativeamericanauthors #indigenousauthors #indigenousbookstagram #indigenouspeople #indigenous #indigenouswriters #nativewriters #nativeamerican #nativeamericans #nativeamericanwisdom #afroindigenous #bookreview #nativebooks #nativeauthor #nativeauthors #nativeamerican #nativeamericans #nativeamericanwisdom #nativeamericanheritagemonth #nativeamericanhistory #nativeamericanculture #tellthetruth

This is literaturally the best thing ever. 💗 As shared last month, @ndngirlsbookclub is going on tour (in a "Big Pink Truck!") and they plan to give away 10,000 free books from Native authors to youth. 👏🏼 We finally have a photo of the truck - SWIPE! Yiłta!, meaning I read it! in Dine Bizaad (the Navajo Language), aims to increase literacy and literary opportunities for Navajo (Diné) people. ✊🏼📖 We are days away and there's plenty to look forward to - Will you be attending any of the stops? Happy Tuesday Church Family, Have you ever heard of Lee Maracle? Just in case you haven't she's an indigenous Canadian writer from the Stó꞉lō nation (pronounced STOH-lo). In her seventy-one years of life, she sought to empower native women by calling out the deep-seated patriarchy and white supremacy within the structure of our modern-day world. #NativeAmerican #Authorspotlight #NativeAuthor #TheBLENDChurchFamily #Community #March #Poet #LancasterCA #AntelopeValley #LACounty #OpenAndAffirming #TraumaInformedChurch #SaferSacredSpace #AllAreWelcome #AllMeansAll #WomensHistroyMonth

This month Author Spotlight goes to 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 #NotYourPrincess While this book is short that does not make it any less impactful. This amazing book lifts up a plethora of Native American women's voices (many of which we will be showing throughout the next week). It's a book we would recommend for children to read, as it doesn't shy away from the reality of struggles and the history these women and the many before them have been through, however, it is made digestible enough for a younger audience to understand. It is absolutely jam-packed with bold beautiful statements, art, history and so much more. We truly can't wait to show you some of the things this book has to offer in the coming week and strongly encourage you to read it. #NativeAmerican #Authorspotlight #NativeAuthor #TheBLENDChurchFamily #Community #March #Church #LancasterCA #AntelopeValley #LACounty #OpenAndAffirming #TraumaInformedChurch #SaferSacredSpace #AllAreWelcome #AllMeansAll #WomensHistroyMonth

BIRCHBARK BOOKS & NATIVE ARTS in Minneapolis, MN 🪶 Spending time in this native bookstore on a sunny March afternoon was so lovely. Instantly a favorite indie bookstore for the airiness of it, the native-made goods such as jewelry and bookmarks being sold, abundance of native authors, and cozy nooks and crannies. I asked the two girls at the counter for recommendatios and they couldn’t have been nicer. I purchased Tommy Orange’s newer book (after enjoying his book, There There) and also was interested to read a memoir, so found Carry by Toni Jensen. Both have such good covers!! Really recommend this unique bookstore if you come to town! Has anyone been? Or have a book by a native author you recommend?

Here are just a few random things about my tribe I thought I’d share with you!! Another tidbit is through the photos I shared. All of these are important plants and foods to my tribe. -Collards: might as well be our official food. Can’t go to any Lumbee event without a collard wrap. Collards are also an important crop as it grows locally in territory. -Dogwood: State flower of NC# -Yellow Squash & Zucchini: More important crops grown by many Lumbee families -Pinecone: Not just through the history you learned about but our tribe’s seal resembles the bottom of a pinecone too. -Tobacco: Sacred medicine. Also common crop grown in territory. My elders grew this too! I hope you found this educational!!! Bookish Necklace no.16: Scars & Stars Czech and Japanese seed beads, paracord, nylon thread, beeswax, buckskin ⭐️💫🌌🌟✨ It’s been some time since I’ve shared a new Bookish necklace! This one was created for Jesse Thistle’s poetry collection Scars & Stars. Like its title, this book is jarringly profound and beautiful inside and out, and it was such good medicine to match beadwork to the gorgeous color palette. In its expanse of starry sky, it also features some hidden glow in the dark beads ✨ This is the first necklace set that I will be making available in my shop, and I’m excited to see where it lands! 📚 Linked in stories Modeled by the lovely @cinnamonkillsfirst 🧡
