The female grebes will often lay some of their eggs in other pairs’ nests. Giving their offspring and genetics another chance if their own nest fails. Not the greatest day, overcast and raining sun did made a brief appearance. Did manage to get a load of shots of Cormorants at Weir Wood Res, with them sitting up in the dead trees at eye level. Not everyones favourite bird but very effective at catching fish. They have to dry out there feathers everytime they come out of the water as they are not waterproof. Day 2, and unfortunately the cygnets haven't fared terribly well in their first 24hrs; there appears to be only four of the eight remaining. There's a whole host of reasons this can happen, but the fact there were two super confident little babies trying out their water wings hours after hatching yesterday (mama couldn’t see them over the steep bank and I had to calmly ‘show’ her where they were; she retrieved them, but they soon toddled back down there) makes me think predators is the most likely explanation. There was no sign I could see of bodies anywhere, but I did keep my distance so I may have missed something. I know there are some pretty gnarly pike in their territory. I can only hope a smaller brood helps mama and papa to keep the remaining ones safe. I’ve never known them to lose so many so quickly. What is interesting is: the pictured cob is not mama's usual partner. Dale Dyke sits in beautiful surroundings on the western fringes below the Derwent Moors: second down in a chain of 4 dams. Scene of a disaster in March 1864 when the wall of the nearly finished dam breached sending 700 millions gallons of water raging down the steep- sided Loxley Valley thro Lower Bradfield, Little Matlock, Malin Bridge & Hillsborough to the River Don & then on thro Sheffield & Attercliffe towards Rotherham many miles distant. Remarkably only 1 person was killed in the nearest village but altogether over 250 perished not to mention 100’s of livestock. Homes, workplaces and bridges were destroyed. All serene today: the mallards had ten tiny ducklings. Keeping🤞🤞🤞for them. The geese seemed to be shepherding them too. The path round the dam is in excellent shape, wind having dried muddy patches.
