Yesterday was a very special day for me! I finally had a close encounter with a black throated diver/loon. I've seen them from a distance several times but they never swam close to me. This week I went with a friend first and we had them swimming towards us for a while but turned before they got close up and personal so the next day I went with my gf as a quick stop just before our moose evening drive. Once we saw it swimming towards us we layed down next to the shore and just kept quiet as it got closer and closer until this very moment. . Nothing is more unique than the loon's voice as if Nature herself is speaking - full of unrestricted freedom and beauty, full of raw emotions, a powerful primordial song that touches the soul… The gifts of Nature do not end with the voice - you are mesmerised by the loon's look and fascinated by its underwater abilities. Sturdy and elegant, this bird is built for life on and under the water (unfortunately, it is "clumsy" on land because its legs are at the very back of the body). The loon can stay submerged for at least 2 minutes and swim up to 400 metres underwater - a master of its element! So, one sunny April evening, I am lying on the shore of a quiet lake, watching a couple of loons diving nearby. The larger bird (presumably the male) disappears from the water's surface without a sound - it has dived. I am waiting with bated breath to see where it will emerge... After a good minute - and it seemed to take much longer - the male emerges in all its beauty right in front of me! Just as he disappeared without a sound, so without a sound, he emerged back - wearing the "necklace of the lake". In the evening light, the drops of the water glitter like crystals, shimmer like stars in the darkness on the loon’s plumage - the bird dived to the green depths of the lake to gather stars. The surface of the calm lake is like a mirror glass, through which the reflected evening light runs and colours the black feathers of the loon - from bluish pine green and purple violet to night blue. I lie covered with camouflage net and wonder - a black-throated loon?... The black throated diver is even rarer than the red so I was incredibly fortunate to see both at the same offshore location. This bird seems more cautious than the red so these pics are really pushing the limits of my camera. As with the red they will hopefully be breeding by nearby lochs so be careful not to disturb if you are in the area. #blackthroateddiver #btobirds
