An interpretation by Dagmar Fischer Full performance video : link in bio 🗝️ This project was an absolute dream come true for me and I am incredibly grateful for Daggy asking me to take part in it. I find all of her compositions insanely touching, they really touch my soul. I love how she managed to give this work a fairylike fragility, while at the same time it holds that deep archaic power. Those who know me know that I have always been into languages. Especially the ones which have a fairy-ish/elf-like sound to them like Icelandic or the Sámi languages. Back in school I tried to learn the elvish languages Sindarin and Quenya by J.R.R. Tolkien and translated a song into Sindarin, which I then performed at my presentation. Later I studied Japanese for some time. Before Daggy showed me a few demos in 2021, I had never really had an idea of Estonian language, other than it sounding like „funny Finnish“ and wasn’t yet aware of the beauty of it, especially in this old poetic style used in Kalevipoeg. I’ve fallen deeply in love with Estonian language and can’t wait to explore more of the culture one day. It really brought up my passion for languages again. On 30.03. / easter night I will sing a capella in both Finnish language and Northern Sámi at @galerienorbertarns where you can dive into a world of feminine drawings by @die_olga_pfeffer_ Opening: 19:00 All lyrics are taken from the original book „Kalevipoeg“ by F.R. Time-space of Vasks Vasks' music is a particular sense of time. And it is also, as Glass says, a place. Somewhere between the beaches of Jurmala and Liepaja during the dead season. A time-place where Barber's melody, Pärt's discipline, Mahler's drama are. Virtuosity and meditation. Vasks' music is a special form of Latvian despair and silence. A timid flock of sandpipers rises in the pre-dawn twilight over the Kemeri marshes, disappearing towards the sea. My favourite Baltic composers: Pärt, Vasks, Thuur, Tulve, Janulytė... (there are more) have something in common: special attention to detail in the soundscape, unison counterpoint, special rhythm, pauses, ethnography and melodies rooted somewhere deep, maybe in the Mesolithic.... But they are also all very different. Vasks is as different from Pärt as Jarmusch is from Lynch. Both have the ecstatic nature of a sound prayer or meditation, but different in form and content. Like if Coppola's Dracula soundtrack wasn't written by Killar, I'd ask for Vasks. With Pärt I usually walk quietly, talking to myself through the forest in dusk.
