24 - A Cover Without People On It Elizabeth Is Missing - Emma Healey I had watched this mini series before I knew about the book so I wasn't sure how the book was going to be wrote.... it's a bit messy. The main character has alzheimers or dementia so the story is all jumbled and jumps from when she was in her late teens to her 80s and she can't keep track of things, which might be accurate for how one thinks when suffering/going through alzheimers/dementia. As the book progresses her condition worsens so the story gets more jumbled. It's interesting because it's kinda shows how these conditions may evolve from a first person point of view but it tells a horrible storyline of her life. Today in 2024, Nova Scotia still operates one underground coal mine, and the world's only subsea coal mine: the Donkin coal mine. Located on the eastern shore of Cape Breton, the Donkin coal mine is polluting the environment with greenhouse gas emissions, destroying local wetlands, and negatively affecting the health of local residents. People living in the communities surrounding the coal mine can't sleep and are experiencing deteriorating health from the noise coming from the ventilation fans. These fans run 24/7 and are in place to dilute the levels of the most potent greenhouse gas - methane, which is being released unabated from this mine. The government acknowledges that the Donkin coal mine is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the province. In fact, it is estimated to release 1 million tonnes annually, which is equivalent to the total emissions of all the cars in a city the size of Quebec City. Despite this, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change has approved the mine’s operation until 2030. This situation is detrimental to the environment, community health, and efforts to combat climate change. We need to accelerate the phaseout of coal mining, eliminate coal from our energy grid, and transition to clean, renewable power. Additionally, we must ensure a fair and just transition to sustainable jobs for our workers. The Donkin mine has been forced to close repeatedly since its reopening due to safety hazards and violations.
