Day 239 of the ongoing genocide. #sumud I felt this poem in my bones this morning — against all odds, a shiver of happiness. Raymond Carver HAPPINESS So early it’s still almost dark out. I’m near the window with coffee, and the usual early morning stuff that passes for thought. When I see the boy and his friend walking up the road to deliver the newspaper. They have on caps and sweaters, and the one boy has a bag over his shoulder. They are so happy they aren’t saying anything, these boys. I think if they could, they would take each other’s arm. It’s early in the morning, and they are doing this thing together. They come on, slowly. The sky is taking on light, though the moon still hangs palely over the water. Such beauty that for a minute death and ambition, even love doesn’t enter into this. Happiness. It comes on unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really, any early morning talk about it.
We have these two stunning still life paintings by Scottish artist @jeanbmartin available. Jean was a graduate of Glasgow School of Art in its hey day and is steeped in the tradition of the Scottish Colourists. She has developed a unique painting technique. She loves the freedom of combining layers of translucent watercolour with the rich textural properties of mixed media. Often incorporating collage and gold leaf into her work, she works in layers, building up iridescent and translucent surfaces to capture her fascination with colour, light and texture. ‘My work is inspired by new and re-visited places which I find creatively invigorating. Bought some pretty stone planters online several months back, but when they arrived and I had fought my way through 6 million layers of bubble wrap, and rescued the dog from under it, I found they had no drainage holes... 🙈 I couldn't face re-packing & posting them, so kept them & planted two pond plants, a tiny creeper called Mazus reptans & Water Forget-me-not (myosotis scorpioides). The former is looking quite effective, but the latter (like an awful lot of other young plants) has blown flat in the freezing wind we've had for the past two days. Welcome to 20/24. #7: Porsche 962C (chassis #010) Chosen by: Andy Blackmore Best finish: 2nd, 1988 Team: Porsche AG Driven by: Klaus Ludwig, Hans-Joachim Stuck, Derek Bell How often is the loser of a race as famous in the collective consciousness as the winner? It's rare, but even in a race won by a cult hero – the Silk Cut Jaguar – the Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962C sticks in the mind like few others. "It's the most influential livery for me," says Andy Blackmore, one of motor racing busiest livery designers, whose graphics adorn dozens of cars around the globe. "Asymmetric liveries were very unusual back in the day, and it was a big inspiration for me personally on some of my favourite projects. It was designed by Rob Powell, who also designed the Rothmans livery, and it's such a clean and well-resolved livery." Stuck had placed the #17 962 on pole, with the sister #18 and #19 also right at the front, but each had technical issues. #17 finished just a handful of seconds behind the winning Jaguar, despite Ludwig running the car dry of fuel a few hours into the race. But for once, it wasn't the result that mattered, but that gorgeous livery. "It helps that Shell and Dunlop use similar red and yellow, which creates perfect synergy," continues Blackmore. "The details are so good: the number panels are integrated into the design, particularly on the sides; and the black top, section, which cleans up the lines." It all started with the broken stem of a pink lupin, snapped by my overzealous pest control! The purple lupin next to it is suffering from an infestation of aphids that I hosed off with the pressure washer. I did it with a much gentler water spray bottle the other day but the little blighters are back with a vengeance so I thought I needed something more powerful to dislodge them. The flower spikes of the purple lupin, a strong and well established plant, coped well with my heavy-handed approach; for the pink one, young and still tender, the jet of water proved a little too forceful. Houghton Hall is a beautiful stately home in Norfolk and both the house and grounds are currently playing host to two exhibitions of sculpture – with Magdalene Odundo’s vessels inside the house and its staterooms, in contrast to Gomley's sculpture outside - see my earlier post about those. Over the course of 20 days, I'm illustrating a car from the 24 Hours of Le Mans, nominated by someone from the world of sportscar racing. I'm calling it "20/24". #6: Audi R18 TDI (chassis #106) Chosen by: Leena Gade Best finish: 1st, 2011 Team: Audi Sport Team Joest Driven by: Benoit Tréluyer, Marcel Fässler, Andre Lotterer Winning Le Mans is hard. It's really, really hard. But if you're Benoit Tréluyer, Marcel Fässler, or Andre Lotterer, it's apparently not as hard as you think. The trio won three out of four Le Mans from 2011 to 2014, and in the process became Le Mans legends. Quietly, from a little plastic shed on the pit wall, a British woman played a large part in orchestrating each of those victories. "If I was to nominate one car, it would be the 2011 Audi R18," says Leena Gade, race engineer for each of the trio's wins. "It was Audi's first closed-top car, which opened up the aerodynamic development and set the tone for the evolution into hybrids in FIA WEC. But above all, it brought us that first win together. Hard to beat that!" Gade has good reason to like the Audi R18. All three wins were achieved with various iterations of the car, with the non-hybrid 2011 version – the car's debut – being their first. 2011 was particularly trying. By the ninth hour, theirs was the only Audi still in the race. In the early 2000s, it partnered with MG to produce a flyweight LMP675 entry, which was fast, but fragile. That 675 became, through various iterations, a mainstay of the LMP2 class over the following years, particularly in the care of RML. “I raced at Le Mans 13 times, in all sorts of cars,” says Thomas Erdos, then racing said RML entry, and now the driver steward for McLaren’s Trophy one-make series. “My very first entry was a Marcos, and that thing was a beast. That was special, because it was my first Le Mans. But the MG Lola sticks out for me.” The RML entry, snappily-named “MG EX264 (Lola)”, was resplendent in the white, blue and red livery of gentleman driver, and main backer, Mike Newton. Newton had developed a very strong relationship with Erdos over the years, and the pair found great success in LMP2 competition. At Le Mans, where they were joined by Warren Hughes, they won back-to-back class titles in 2005 and 2006. “The car was really fast,” he enthuses. Erdos has lost little of his joy for motor racing since his move to the steward’s chair. “It was only a two-litre engine, but it was producing close to 600 horsepower. In those days the cars were so light, and when you put qualifying tyres on a car like that, a lap around Le Mans is special. I really enjoyed doing a lap of Le Mans absolutely full chat, and putting it on pole. That’s what gave me the most satisfaction.
