Thank you to the amazing community volunteers who came out this weekend to kick start our new "red osier whip farm" project! We worked to clear the blackberries and dead branches so we can coppice the red-osier dogwood. And we salvaged ideal whips throughout the process. Coppicing is an old world (over 5000 years) method used to create easily accessible wood that can be used for buildings, furniture, fuel wood, even tree hay! This is a long term project, creating a more efficient means of obtaining red-osier dogwood live stakes for enhancing our parks and reducing shoreline erosion at Brae Island in our wattle walls. We stake red osier and willow whips each spring to build up the living retaining walls. We also use willow branches to build the retaining walls. Whips will also be shared with other regional parks when they really start taking off. We're so excited! At DRBIPA we work hard to provide the public with environmental stewardship opportunities at Derby Reach Regional Park and Brae Island Regional Park. We organize and host volunteer events in the parks. Help protect our lovely green mossy trails and natural environment – all are welcome to become a DRBIPA Park Ambassador or Member or Donor! Our nonprofit association is run by a dedicated group of volunteers on our Board of Directors. As a nonprofit we cannot operate without our volunteer Board and we are so thankful for all our Board Members who each volunteer between 4-10 hours per month. Park Ambassadors work on special projects such as planting new shrubs to stop erosion on Brae Island and pull out ivy that is climbing trees and smothering native plants on the forest floor. Volunteers help out at events, contribute to our nature blog, complete environmental conservation projects, and so much more! DRBIPA also hosts free community events such as guided nature walks in the parks and nature-themed webinars. Check our events page for more information. Donations to support our community-based programs can be made through Metro Vancouver Regional Parks Foundation. Enrolling as a DRBIPA Member helps the park association provide environmental restoration and conservation in the parks. Membership fees and donations directly support our community-based education, conservation, and recreation programming.
