Mayapple - Podophyllum peltatum - at Wade Mountain Landtrust Preserve in Huntsville, Alabama on March 24, 2024. A native plant of Berberidaceae (the Barberry Family), Mayapple colonizes by rhizomes, forming dense mats in damp, open woods throughout the eastern U.S. Leaves are umbrella-like, 8-15 inches across, divided into 5-9 segments. Flowering plants have a forked stem with one leaf on each branch while juvenile and nonflowering plants have one leaf on an unforked stem. The common name refers to the May blooming of its apple-blossom-like flower though often blooms in April too. This one was a little early. Flowers are solitary, nodding, white, about 1.5 inch wide, and have 6-9 petals. Although the leaves, roots, and seeds are poisonous if ingested in large quantities, the roots were used as a cathartic by Native Americans. The edible, ripe, golden-yellow fruits can be used in jellies, though some websites say they can only be eaten in limited quantities and may be mildly toxic. The flavor is bland and resembles an overripe melon. Bomarea lancifolia (Alstroemeriaceae) Ecuador . The astounding biodiversity of the Neotropics is difficult to put into words and each time I visit the tropics I am awe struck by how many new plants I see. Even visiting the same locations repeatedly 3 or 4 times can still yield new and interesting plants. It's fairly easy to get a grasp on most Neotropical plant families, and even most of the genera, but within each genus the species diversity seems endless. And it is endlessly exciting to see so much variety! . Many hypotheses have been suggested to account for the extremely high tropical diversity including long term climatic stability, inter-species competition, water availability, and geological activity. Likely all of these factors are at play driving speciation but a recent article published by @ctribble09 neatly demonstrates that the Andean orogeny was the primary factor that drove the speciation of Bomarea. "The rapid radiation of Bomarea (Alstroemeriaceae:Liliales), driven by the rise of the Andes" (Tribble et. al) contains the results of a massive sequencing effort for Bomarea showing that the Genus originated in southern South America and underwent a series of radiations correlated with the formation of the Andes as it moved North, resulting in approximately 120 known species of Bomarea today. It's a great read and I'll share the article in my story for anyone who is interested! My biggest male Litoria caerulea tree frog, but still a cuty. They are ver, easy to keep, as they tolerate room temperature in a big terrarium and furthermore do not need a higher humidity. I currently feed them 2-3 times a week with crickets, but they will eat everything what they can swallow, even smaller frogs! So my baby tree frogs still are in a seperate terrarium, until they are big enough. For my adults I will soon try to breed them. The setup (rain tank) is almost ready. But I still need to identify, if one of my frogs really is a female, or if its a male who just rarely is croaching.
Carolina Reaper came out smaller than expected. Must have caught something during their growth. The seasons and weather here has been pretty stressful for them. I noticed the leaves have started to grow much smaller once I noticed some spottings. Trillium grandiflorum — white trilliumt To my mind, one of the easiest plants to identify: One terminal pedicellate flower with 3 leaves (actually bracts), 3 sepals, 3 petals, 6 stamens in two whorls of 3. Trillium flowers remain open and fertile for two to three weeks which increases the probability of visitation by the large long-tongued bees. This is an exceptionally long blooming period for a spring ephemeral. Trillium is in the native to Northern Hemisphere family Melanthiaceae. It's not a very well known family of plants, however there is one other species that belongs to it that my fellow Europeans might know. This species is Paris quadrifolia or true lover's knot (вороняче око). Extremely toxic but extensively used as an ethnopharmaceutical. Interrupting the recent running posts for a return to the roots of my insta handle!! Today was a very special day indeed! This gorgeous sapphire blue bloom is one of the UK's rarest flowers; Gentiana verna (Spring gentian) , found only in Upper Teesdale! Even in Teesdale it's uncommon and declining. It's a plant I've occasionally looked for, but it's fiendishly difficult to spot when it's not in flower as the leaves are so small. I couldn't believe it when I spotted it out of the corner of my eye growing alongside the Tees on a craggy limestone wall. Perfection! I'm so happy to have seen this beauty in flower, absolutely could not believe my luck, I'm super fortunate to live so close to such a floral hotspot too. There are so many gorgeous plants around at this time of year, always keep your eyes peeled for the little gems wherever you are! Carnivorous common butterwort growing at Parsonage Moor nature reserve. Common butterwort is an insectivorous plant. Its bright yellow-green leaves excrete a sticky fluid that attracts unsuspecting insects; once trapped, the leaves slowly curl around their prey and digest it. The acidic bogs, fens and damp heaths that common butterwort lives in do not provide it with enough nutrients, so it has evolved this carnivorous way of life to supplement its diet. Gardening is all about the long game. This is our front bed at our Michigan property, and it was just all weeds when we bought it years ago. Slowly we have been adding natives and cultivars to make a mix of color- fun and texture. It's still in progress, and it is taking a lot longer to get to where I want it because we are not at the cottage full-time. But we keep chipping away! The flag announces to our neighbors what we are trying to do in our gardens, and helps educate the neighborhood in a pretty way. Some of my red eyed tree frogs (Agalychnis callidryas). 😍 They are so adorable and really easy to care for, but relatively shy. It is very hard to get an awesome picture, while they are posing, as they instantly try to act like they are simply not there, with closed eyes etc., as soon as they notice me comming. 😂 I currently feed them some crickets fed with calcium and vitamin pearls every two or three days. Two times a week they will get fresh water and once a week I have to clean the glasses. That's pretty much it for caring. I am furthermore only spraying, as relative humidity drops below 60%. Red eyed tree frogs are native in southern america. Around Mexico and Venezuela... So they will feel happy with temperatures around 20-27°C all year in a slightly moist and not to bright environment. They tend to take sunbathes and like it warm, but they prefer to have the opportunity to hide under leafs or in smaller/hidden corners. So while designing your terrarium, make sure to seal all gaps perfectly!
(private projects) flowering time on my x "Apple fritter" auto Cannabis plant. It is a real joy to see them growing bigger and bigger. I am very curious about the further development of the inflorescences. Cannabis is a really suitable beginner plant, as it combines lots of horticultural growing aspects. So you are able to learn quite a lot about plants in general, while growing Cannabis babies. :-)
