The Colossus of Constantine is an ancient Roman statue that was constructed around 312-315 AD. It was commissioned by Emperor Constantine I to celebrate his victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge. The statue originally stood in the Basilica of Maxentius in the Roman Forum. The remains were discovered in the 15th century during excavations in the Roman Forum. Today, the fragments of the Colossus, including parts of the head, hands, and feet, are housed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, part of the Capitoline Museums in Rome. The statue’s head alone measures over 2.5 meters in height, suggesting the original full statue was approximately 12 meters tall. It was made primarily of marble with other materials such as brick and wood used for structural support. #ColossusOfConstantine #AncientRome #RomanStatue #ConstantineI #RomanForum #BasilicaOfMaxentius #RomanEmperors #RomanArt #HistoricalArtifacts #CapitolineMuseums #RenaissanceDiscovery #RomanSculpture #MarbleStatue #RomanVictory #ImperialRome #ClassicalAntiquity #ArchaeologicalFinds #RomanHistory #MonumentalArt #CulturalHeritage

The Colossus of Constantine reconstructed! https://asebastiani.com/2024/05/01/a-colossal-awe/ The experience of encountering the reconstructed Colossus of Constantine, prominently displayed within the verdant environs of Palazzo Caffarelli in Rome, evokes a profound sense of astonishment. Immersed within this setting, one is transported to a realm where the meticulously crafted proportions faithfully capture the essence of the grandeur sought during the 4th century. It is worth noting that the original intent behind its creation was to grace the interior of the Basilica of Maxentius, thereby underscoring its monumental significance. The sheer magnificence of the statue commands awe and reverence, accentuated by the deliberate selection of its placement. Positioned discreetly away from the throngs of tourists, it beckons the discerning observer to engage in a nuanced interplay of perspectives. Initially appearing diminutive in the distance, the Colossus gradually asserts its dominance as one draws near, ultimately dominating the expanse of the garden and captivating the gaze of the beholder. This installation represents a meticulously orchestrated endeavor, underscored by its temporal nature, scheduled to endure until the end of 2025. Notably, the striking resemblance between Constantine and the iconic Zeus of Olympia serves as a poignant reminder of an era characterized by profound ideological upheavals poised to redefine the very fabric of societal norms and structures. #ColossusOfConstantine #PalazzoCaffarelli #RomanSculpture #AncientArt #RomanEmpire #BasilicaOfMaxentius #HistoricalMonument #ArtHistory #AncientRome #ConstantineTheGreat #HistoricalSculpture #RomanArchitecture #SculptureGarden #ArtInstallation #TravelRome #RomanHistory #CulturalHeritage #HistoricalSites #AncientWonders #ArtAppreciation #ZeusOfOlympia #IconicArt #SocietalNorms #HistoricalPerspectives #MonumentalArt #TimelessBeauty #aɴᴄɪᴇɴᴛcᴜʟᴛᴜʀᴇ

#arteromana #costantinoi #sculturaantica #museicapitolini #patrimonioculturale #antichitàromane #storiadellarte #colosso #basilicadimassenzio #culturaclassica #romanart #constantinei #ancientsculpture #capitolinemuseums #culturalheritage #romanantiquities #arthistory #colossus #basilicaofmaxentius #classicalculture

Immediately recognisable thanks to its enormous size, the Basilica of Maxentius in the Roman Forum was begun by the emperor of the same name in 308 AD before being completed by his rival Constantine after the latter’s victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. To leave no doubts as to the building’s new patron, a massive statue of Constantine over 15 metres high was installed within (you can see the massive head, hands and feet in the Capitoline Museums). The surviving part of the structure today features three enormous barrel vaults studded with huge coffers, and lovely floors of precious coloured marbles arranged into geometrical patterns. Although only a small part of the majestic original building, it gives a vivid sense of the awe-inspiring scale of ancient Rome! This is just one of the most impressive things to see in the Roman Forum, check out some of the others by clicking the link above! #RomanForum #AncientRomanForum #AncientRome #RomanHistory #Basilica #BasilicaOfMaxentius #AncientRomanBasilica #MilvianBridge #Constantine #EmperorConstantine #ParcoColosseo

Reconstruction of the Basilica of Maxentius (Constantine, Nova) in Rome with the colosal statue of Emperor Constantinos I. The Great. The basilica was built from 307 to 313 on an area of 70 metres × 100 metres. The builder, Emperor Maxentius, rejected the traditional type of columned basilica and based his new plan on the model of the large thermal halls, such as the Baths of Diocletian. He had this basilica built as a monumental reception hall. The building was intended to intimidate his visitors, who could only approach it from the front and thus had to walk along the longitudinal axis of the enormous structure. The emperor himself, however, did not live to see the completion of his basilica, as he fell in 312 in the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, in which he was defeated by his rival Constantinos I. It was thus Constantinos who was the first to build the basilica. So it was Constantinos to whom the Roman Senate consecrated the building. Before that, however, he made some changes. He had a colossal statue of himself built in acrolith technique in the apse, moreover, another entrance was opened towards the Via Sacra and opposite, in the central arcade of the right side aisle, a niche apse was added, which created a new perspective axis transverse to the original one. From 354 onwards, the building was called Basilica Constantini, Constantine's Basilica. It was mainly used for the judicial activities of the praefectus urbi. The Basilica of Maxentius once had a colossal statue of Constantine. It was a composite structure with the clothed parts being made of bronze or gilded metals and the unclothed parts made of marble. The marble fragments survive in the courtyard of the Capitoline Museum where they were placed shortly after (re)discovery in 1486. It is an unusual collection with two right hands suggesting the statue had been reworked at some point. The metal was likely looted in the early medieval period. _________ #basilicaofmaxentius #constantine #constantinethegreat #lateantiquity #maxentius #lateroman #4thcentury #romanstatue #colossalstatue #romanforum #fororomano #romanmarble #romanemperors #romanemperor #romanruins #romanartifacts #romanworld #romanempire #ancientworld #historyofrome #historyblogger #historyblog #publichistory #collage #layout #canadianbackpacker #capitolinemuseums #romecity #romeitaly

#roma #basilicadimassenzio #palazzodeiconservatori #campidoglio #statuadicostantino #museiincomuneroma #museidiroma #imperatorecostantino #marforio #museicapitolini #fororomano #rionecampitelli #buongiornoroma #noidiroma #igersroma #igerslazio #visitrome #repromagram #vivoroma #archeologia #anticaroma #colossusofconstantine #basilicaofmaxentius #archeology #ancientrome #romanforum #emperorconstantine #rome

#roma #basilicadimassenzio #palazzodeiconservatori #campidoglio #statuadicostantino #museiincomuneroma #museidiroma #medioevo #imperatorecostantino #massenzio #museicapitolini #paludamentum #fororomano #gioveottimomassimo #innocenzoviii #rionecampitelli #buongiornoroma #noidiroma #igersroma #igerslazio #visitrome #vivoroma #archeologia #anticaroma #colossusofconstantine #basilicaofmaxentius #archeology #ancientrome #romanforum #rome

#roma #basilicadimassenzio #statuadicostantino #imperatorecostantino #massenzio #viasacra #fororomano #viadeiforiimperiali #collinavelia #rionecampitelli #buongiornoroma #noidiroma #igersroma #igerslazio #repromagram #visitrome #vivoroma #archeologia #anticaroma #colossusofconstantine #basilicaofmaxentius #archeology #ancientrome #romanforum #emperorconstantine #rome

We would realise that the landscape around him, in around 35 BC, was very different from what we see and from what we usually see in reconstructions. We would see that the #ArchofTitus wasn’t there yet, as well as the monumental #TempleofVenusandRome and the imposing #BasilicaofMaxentius. The #RomanForum valley was being transformed: the Temple of the Divine Julius, built by Augustus in honour of his adoptive father, was under construction. Work on the renovation of the #BasilicaAemilia was nearing completion while the Basilica Julia, begun by Caesar but finished by Augustus, was under construction. The Curia Julia was also nearing completion; the Temple of the Beavers and the Temple of Saturn were there, but both had an older architectural appearance than the one that has been partly preserved to us; the great backdrop of the Arch of Septimius Severus, which would be built almost 250 years later, was completely missing.

This picture in the Foro Romano was taken by my father in the late 1950s or 1960s. Notice the three bersaglieri in the picture. After eight patent applications and three years of research and development, @bulgari is finally revealing their innovative, record-breaking timepiece: The Octo Finnissimo Ultra. Conceptualized by Bvlgari’s Creative Director, @FabrizioBuonomassaStigliani, the long-awaited, highly-anticipated timepiece stands as the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. The watch’s eight-sided geometry is inspired by Rome’s Basilica of Maxentius, and showcases Bvlgari’s Italian heritage. Viewed in profile, the ultra-thin 1.80mm thick timepiece appears be 2D. However, when observed from the front, the intricate, octagonal dial reveals a clear attention to detail and craftsmanship. One of the most interesting aspects of the timepiece is the QR code engraved in the barrel’s ratchet-wheel, which links to one of ten exclusive NFT artworks.

3D reconstruction of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome. In this model, I tried to give my own interpretation of the proposed appearance of the architectural design of the interior and exterior decoration on the basis of archeological data, and partly graphic reconstructions of the early 20th century (Giuseppe Gatteschi). The work is not finished, and so far depicts only the volumetric-spatial structure of the interior and exterior without the use of textures and facing materials. Perhaps the model will be supplemented and expanded in the future. The Colonna della Pace stands outside the ancient Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Its name, meaning the column of peace, comes from an incorrect association with the pagan Temple of Peace. The column is in actuality the only survivor of a set of eight that once adorned the massive Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine in the Roman Forum. Its ruins are still imposing today and provide something of a hint of what it may have looked like when it was constructed in the 4th century CE. Today's monument was erected in 1614 by the order of Pope Paul V Borghese. It is more than 15 meters tall and is topped by a bronze statue of the Virgin and Child which alludes to another name it has, the Column of the Virgin. Ref. Steven F. 📷🇫🇮Maxentiuksen basilika oli aikoinaan Forum Romanumin suurin rakennus, josta nykyään on jäljellä kolme suurta ja vaikuttavan näköistä holvia. Forumin pohjoispuolella sijaitsevan Velia-kukkulan rinteessä sijaitsi antiikin aikana maustekauppahalli, Horrea Piperatia. Sen paikalle keisari Maxentius ( Rooman keisarina vuosina 306–312 jKr.) alkoi rakennuttamaan suurta basilikaa vuonna 308 jKr. Keisari Konstantinuksen syrjäyttäessä Maxentiuksen Mulviuksen sillan taistelun jälkeen vuonna 312 jKr. rakennustöitä jatkettiin uuden keisarin määräyksestä. Bailikan rakennustyöt saatiin päätökseen vuonna 313 jKr.

Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine It is the largest structure on-site and it still has its roof and three of its spectacular arches and vaults. “Basilica” originates from the Greek word “basileus” meaning King. Originally, basilica was an ancient Roman public buildings, where courts were held and other governmental and public functions were performed. The construction of this structure began in 308 AD, during the reign of Roman Emperor Maxentius, and was completed in 312-313 AD, during Constantine the Great's reign. This is a digital reconstruction of the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine - the substantial ruins of which we can still visit in the Roman Forum. The basilica was completed in 312 AD. The 12-metre colossal statue of Constantine used to stand here. Fragments of this statue are displayed in the Capitoline Museums. The statue used to sit in the west apse of the basilica. It was the largest building in the Forum, and the last Roman basilica built in the city. The grand structure was constructed from moulded Roman concrete and decorated internally with revetted marble panels which created very opulent effects. As you can see - only the northern part of the building survives. The south and central sections were probably destroyed by the earthquake of 847. In 1349 the vault of the nave collapsed in another earthquake. The only one of the eight 20-metre (66 ft) high columns that survived the earthquake was brought by Pope Paul V to Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore in 1614. All that remains of the basilica today is the north aisle with its three concrete barrel vaults. I’ve been trying to find out what the Basilica was used for under Constantine and later emperors. Basilicas were multi-purpose spaces which often served as law courts. They sometimes housed shops and government offices. However, the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine did not have shops and offices and we do not hear of courts meeting here. It remains something of a mystery. (Digital reconstructions by Benoit Schille).

Fragments of the Colossus of Constantine statue from 315 AD whichever are now displayed in the Courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori at the Capitoline Museums in Rome. They were discovered in the Basilica of Maxentius on the northern boundary of the Roman Forum in 1486. The seated figure would have been about 12 meters (40 feet) height. The head is about 2½ meters in height and each foot is over 2 meters long.

The hand of Constantine (315 AD) from a colossal statue found in 1486 in the Basilica on the northern boundary of the Roman Forum - now at the entrance courtyard at the Capitoline Museums. Judging by the size of the remaining pieces, the seated, enthroned figure would have been about 12 meters (40 feet) high. The head is about 2½ meters high and each foot is over 2 meters.
