Toxoplasma gondii is a parasitic protozoan that infects cats as the ideal host. It is able to infect any mammal and bird, but can only finish its life cycle in cats. Wild felids and domestic cats can carry this parasite and be asymptomatic, meaning that they may not show any signs that they are infected. Since it has evolved to infect cats, when it finds a dog, human, or another animal, this parasite damages tissues as it moves through the body looking for cat tissue. They can cause rashes, swelling, seizures, blindness, lung damage, and damage to unborn fetuses. Keeping cats indoors, good hand hygiene, and cleaning cat feces before 24 hours have passed helps prevent the spread. My friend found this little guy crawling on their dog this morning after a walk around the Keswick neighborhood. Just a reminder that while ticks are more commonly found in grassy bushy areas, they can reside anywhere. If you find one, consider dropping it off at the clinic, or submitting it online at etick.ca for identification. The government pays for Lyme disease testing of the tick if it’s a carrier species. There are other diseases that ticks can carry as well, so if it has bitten you pup make sure to monitor for vague symptoms like skin rashes, fever, lethargy, or aches. This guy doesn’t look engorged so he likely hasn’t bitten anything yet. Did you know cats can adjust to a three-legged lifestyle remarkably well and many disabled cats live a full and happy life? What am I???? Ear MITE! Mites are a common ectoparasite that live on and around the ears of our pets. They are among the most common sources of ear disease and infection. Ear mites may cause scratching, irritation, dark and crusty wax, rash, hair loss, and blood blisters in the ear. To prevent mites we can keep our pets out of contact with unknown animals and keep our cats indoors. It is also important to regularly wash bedding. We can also frequently check and clean our pets ears. Treatment of ear mites comes in many forms ranging from oral, topical, to injectable medications. The treatment of ear mites targets the adult mites, in some cases multiple treatments will be needed to ensure any eggs have hatched and been treated. PSA: Previously the only requirement to go to the states with your pup was a valid rabies vaccine. Now there’s more requirements. Be sure to check with your vet before you travel to make sure you’re not stuck at the border. Call it animal safety, disease prevention, safety, red tape, PITA, or whatever you would like. But just be aware it’s not as easy as it has been previously 🙂 You will now need to be 1) healthy on arrival 2) microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccine given at the time of or after the microchip 3) be 6+months old 4) have a CDC dog import form filled out 5) additional requirements depending on your travel history and where your vaccines were administered. Meet Jasper! Jasper came to see us because he wasn’t acting like himself and was vomiting. Jasper’s owner also noticed he was missing a compression sock and suspected Jasper ate it. After some diagnostics, we determined he had a foreign body and recommended we do surgery asap to get what what’s blocking his intestinal tract out. Dr Hanna preformed the surgery and once he was in he discovered part of the intestine where the blockage was had turned necrotic. Dr Hanna took out the foreign body (which did turn out to be his owners missing sock) and the necrotic section and performed a anastomosis. What is an Anastomosis? It is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the large bowel or colon is removed and the remaining ends are then connected. This surgery is used in emergency settings when a blockage or a severe perforation is present in the digestive tract. What am I??? I am a louce! Lice are small parasites that live in the fur and skin of our pets. Luckily for us we cannot get lice from our four legged friends! A good indication that your pet needs to be checked is excessive licking, biting, and scratching followed by small patches of hair loss of the affected area. There are two common types of lice known as biting and sucking. These lice will feed from blood, skin cells, and other fluids that come from our pets. When our pets come into contact with another animal of their same breed, with lice they are at risk of contracting the parasite. From there the female will lay eggs in the fur which will then hatch and multiply. (Yes lice are species specific, so Fido wont be sharing his lice with you!) Lice can be prevented with broad spectrum oral or topical monthly treatments. It is also important to check your pet on a regular basis as well as washing all bedding and grooming supplies. Puppies are separated by play style to ensure a successful playtime experience. Initially, if your puppy is uncertain about playing, they will be given an opportunity to watch from behind a baby gate where they can feel safe until they gain the confidence to join in. Mind Your Manners classes are not set up for dogs to interact with one another. We will work on foundation behaviours (sit, down, touch, place, recall, loose leash walking, calmly through the door, etc.) in a minimally distracting environment.
