We have a garden bed next to the mud kitchen which has gone crazy with a beautiful bright green weed in the recent rain. The year 1s have been so excited to add this green goodness to their culinary creations. I have had green tea, pea soup, green cordial, decorated cupcakes and all manner of recipes made for me this week. They have been crushed, poured, stirred, whisked, strained and delivered with a smile and a recipe explanation. You will notice that everything in the mud kitchen is a real life object - no toys or “child sized” replicas. Obviously, from a safety perspective, there are no glass or ceramic items used outside but plastic and metal are sufficient. @walkerlearning @walkerlearningclassrooms

“Small World” can also be looked at as small “dramatic play” ... it is the same imaginative role play just in miniature! 😊 A few of the year ones have shown an interest in pirates so I have linked it loosely to our phonics focus (short oo) by way of Captain Hook! 🤣 Small World area obviously has a theme with figures and props but is also always heavily littered with literature - picture books and word cards. It has paper available for writing, drawing and recording. When possible it links to maths - in this case map making is an easy link. Looking forward to seeing what plays out in the area next week. This year my class is so invested in the dramatic play area. Last year - no one went there. It’s so funny how different cohorts of students respond differently - it’s what makes teaching so fun. One of my year 1’s had a reporter task last week of last term to report a list of requests from the class for what we should have in dramatic play. Top of the list - a Vet! So I’m hoping this will be a win! 😊 @walkerlearning - giving students a voice and agency over their learning.
