This item is marked with the V and USA logo, and measures 4 ¼” high. The exact condition is as follows: The colors are exceedingly bright and rich and without fading. There are two short slices to the back, and three tiny holes to the back. There is one tiny hole to a side seam. A similar example can be seen on page 110 of the outstanding reference book entitled “Vintage Halloween Collectibles: Third Edition” by esteemed collector, expert and author Mark B. Ledenbach. Mark’s example has different coloring and does not have the roly-poly base. Using his relative scarcity index, Mark has assigned the number “2” to his example, which means RARE. In my opinion, this rare toy and decoration simply has it all! It features a pirate veggie man with a Jack o' Lantern head and a pumpkin body pulling a cart carrying his lifelong shrouded JOL ghoul friend as he has done for approximately 100 years. Notice the incredibly rich colors used here. They are exceedingly bright, and I am particularly drawn to the use of metallic silver at the pirate’s sword. Both icons are smiling in anticipation of All Hallows Eve. This decoration measures 3 ½” long X 2 ¼” high. The Viscoloid logo, featuring a V and USA, can be found on the back of the pirate’s cape. One like this – although in a different color variant – can be seen on page 115 of the outstanding reference book entitled “Vintage Halloween Collectibles: Third Edition” by esteemed collector, expert and author Mark B. Ledenbach. Using his relative scarcity index, Mark has assigned the number “2” for this piece, which means RARE. We are honored that a few pieces from our collection appear in this book! There are NO cracks or repairs. There is NO fading. As mentioned earlier, the colors are bright and eye catching. There are two small, dented areas. One near each back wheel. Here is a very merry grouping of authentic vintage Christmas celluloid decorations featuring a charming Santa Claus and four reindeer. All five pieces were made in the USA, and two of the smaller reindeer have Viscoloid mark. Hailing from circa 1930s, Santa Claus stands proudly carrying a sack on his back with two sweet dolls inside. He also carries gifts of fruit and more. Jolly Old Saint Nick measures 7 ¼” high. He is in excellent condition for his elderly age with no dents; his hand-painted colors are bright and cheerful. There is a short, closed separation at the mold line on one foot. There are beans or the like inside to help him stand upright, and they make him sound like a rattle. The larger reindeer measures 4 ¾” long. This fine fellow is in MINT condition. The three smaller reindeer measure about 2 ¾” long, and all three are also in MINT condition. He has a pumpkin for a head, carrots or parsnips for legs, and turnips for feet. As you might know, fruit and vegetable imagery was used as an early nod to the autumn harvest. This GHOULish guy wears a smiling and happy expression on one side, and a sad or angry expression on the other. He has wonderful hand-painted features and air-brushed stars, crescent moons, a perched owl, and flying black bat as well. This FRIGHTfully fabulous fellow is a rattle! He has beans or some other items inside so that he is a noisemaker as well as a super-rare decoration. He measures 4 ¼” high and is marked with the logo of the Viscoloid company on a foot. The colors are bright and without issue. There is a tiny dent to each nose, and one tiny dent to a turnip foot. I find NO cracks or repairs. He stands BOOOtifully – even with his large and imposing head. Hallowe'en celluloid memorabilia produced by the Viscoloid Company is very desirable, especially given the delicate nature of celluloid material. Here is a brief history of the Viscoloid Company: The Dupont Viscoloid Company, Inc. is a former plastics manufacturer based in Leominster, Massachusetts. The company was founded by Alexander Paton, Ludwig Stross and Bernard W. Doyle in 1901 as the Sterling Comb Company. In 1912, the three men consolidated a number of smaller plastics manufacturers under the name Viscoloid Company. The company pioneered the use of pyroxylin plastic in hair combs, toilet articles, and a number of different products. In 1914, the Viscoloid Company began marketing pyroxylin plastic toys. The toy industry quickly became the company’s most profitable, and the Viscoloid was soon the leading pyroxylin plastic toy manufacturer in America. By 1923, Bernard Doyle had taken over the company and “The Viscoloid” spanned 106 buildings and was the largest employer in Leominster. In 1925, the company was sold to the Dupont Company of Leominster and was renamed the Dupont Viscoloid Company, Inc.
