With Air Max Day coming up, here’s one of my ultimate favourites. The Air Max Light from 1989 currently being exhibited at the @nrwforum. I always had a special place in my heart for all those models that release inbetween iconic silhouettes, like the Nike Air Support for example. Even though much lesser known and celebrated, they do not lack of great design and style compared to their famous relatives. The Nike Air Max Light is no different. Also called the Air Max II in junior sizing ( see the Air Max II Junior on the second slide) and not to be confused with the Air Max II Light (which came years later). I love the Air Max Light, because it is just a little bit bolder and more extravagant with its big plastic applications than the Air Max 1. Also it gives us a nice preview of what was to come by paving the way for the Air Max 90. I have been a bit obsessed with the Nike Air Digs since forever and the model still hasn’t lost any of its charm to me in the past 20+ years. As you can see I accumulated quite a few pairs over the past decades and even though they are all deteriorating, I still love them and will hold on to them as long as I can. Originally released in 1991 as a volleyball shoe in a high and and low (slide 2) version, the Nike Air Digs Hi was retroed in a few CWs in 2008. Not the worst retro I have seen since then, but definitely not the best either. My packing process to move house is slowly coming to an end, but I want to share some more pairs I ‘unearthed’ in the process with you. So todays vintage-with-no-retro pair is this old beauty from 1991. The Nike Command Force or Air Flight Lite are probably the morst talked about models when in the 1992 movie ‘White Men cant jump’ but this pair of LA Gear Catapults can also be found amongst the many hot sneaker appearance. The model shares its screen time with many top Basketball shoes from the pre 92 era like the Nike AJ VI infrareds, AJ V fire reds, Air Force V lows, Ultra Force mids, Solo Flights, Converse Pro Conquest and adidas Arillery, just to name a few of the kicks which make up many of today’s ’classics’. The Catapult is probably the least mentioned in this list of prominence, but when it comes to crumbling, this pair is just as diligent as it’s contemporaries. One of my favourite ideas for my F&F Conductor is the orange heel flex zone. As a reference to the high-tech performance sports shoe the model debuted as, I assigned this little piece the texture and colour of a basketball. Still can’t believe nobody ever thought of doing that, but I really love it. Another detail is the two slogans I put on the inside of the tongue: ‚Don’t believe the hype‘ the famous public enemy song starts with „caught you lookin’ for the same thing It’s a new thing, check out this I bring’ and is not only a great poetic introduction to my pair, but the slogan has been part of my communication for a long time when it come to talking about my passion for sneakers. Because I don’t see sneakers as an investment and I certainly have little interest in shoes because of their common hype. #vintageVSretro represents my way of looking at today’s sneaker industry, the mass productions, the created hype and at all the remakes aka retros of sneakers. Another vintage vs retro about a special pair. To say I am happy with these is an understatement! I think this is one of the best Nike retros since the Nike Air Pressure and Command Force. Of course not all details are identical (that toebox has some leading to do from @thinkingdifferent._ ), but I appreciate how many of them where considered. The slim vintage like nylon tongue (even though it is not grey) the butter leather and the tongue logo are my favourite features on these remakes. The mesh was chosen so well and the overall feel of the shoe when you wear it is quite close to my vintage pairs. I am sad these where not released in Europe so far but seeing first pairs in other CWs pop up at stores like @43einhalb (I like that special edition bag you created!) I am hoping many will follow. Ok, so now I get why it’s still worth going for vintage over a reissue! Before comparing the latest reissue storage shell turtles, I was just happy to have a complete set. They are now on my shelf with my vintage ones, and even though it doesn’t really matter, it kind of bothers me that the colours are so off. Leo and mikey are close enough, but Donnie and Ralph look abit out of place. As tmnt isn’t my main toy line I collect, I’m just glad to get a representation of them without having to spend a fortune. Tomorrow the Jordan II will be rereleased and since I have been a fan of the silhouette for decades here’s a vintage vs. retro, although it is actually a retro vs. retro since none of the depict pairs is the OG. From top to bottom: Nike Air Jordan II 2022 (US 7) 2010 (US 7) 2004 (US 7Y) The first obvious difference between the previous retros and this one is the missing red outline on the side as well as the little tag in the back of the tongue piping with a ‘23’ on it. So already a nice step towards the original. The Jordan on the bottom sole was replaced by Nike and the heel tag is back to black also like on the original pair. The winged basketball logo tag on the tongue is much softer and out of all retros this 2022 pair is definitely the one with the best leather although overall it seems a bit wider than it’s predecessors. I am very satisfied with this 2022 version and although I haven’t put it on yet I am convinced this one will wear, crease and age the best out of them all. A big thank you to @bstn.wmns for the plug! Vintage vs Retro 1985 OG Nike Terminator vs 2022 retro Nike Terminator high In 1985 the most popular and successful basketball college teams where equipped with their own colourway in Nike’s “be true to your school” campaign, except the Georgetown Stonewalls aka Hoyas. They had just won the national Championship the year before and where on top of their game so Nike honoured this special team with a new show inspired by the Nike Legend but in their team colours blue and grey. As a special make up for the team Nike added the ‘Hoyas’ lettering on the heel. The shoes released to the public featured Nike lettering on the heel instead. BTW the name Hoyas stems from the term “Hoya Sexa” which translates to “what Rocks”. A cheer that was started from Latin students and stuck with the team. Over all this 2022 retro of one of my most favourite shoes could have been excellent with a better choice of leather and a bit more concern for original shapes, but is a good alternative for anyone not owning the OG in my opinion. Retro is the style that 'looks' old, based on past trends, whereas Vintage 'is' old, belonging to the era it represents. Eg: A dress that was made in a boutique today that looks like a French ballgown from the 1800s is Retro, while a hand-me-down ball gown from 19th century France that has been passed from generation to generation is Vintage. I had the pleasure to get a visit from adidas at my place to show you some of my favourite trefoil. In the front you can see a nerd who‘d rather be behind than infront of the camera, but in the back you can see some models that did not make the cut. For example a pair of black adidas Americana 2 from marocco peeking out behind my elbow. Below a pair of New Jabbars and on the other side a classic made in France red on white Attitude. Also one of my favourite kids models the adidas Paff below a pair of Jabbars from the late 70s on the top left. What else can you spot? I worked in #vintageclothing for 15 years so this topic is important to me. Let’s educate ourselves and label our goods appropriately, thus educating the consumer! 👍 Fashion items must be AT LEAST 20 years old to be considered #vintagefashion so, sorry but your 2010 Harley Davidson t-shirt is NOT vintage. Typically, a vintage item is not retro and a retro item is never vintage…unless it survives 20 years or more, then it becomes #vintageretro 🤓 Any questions?!
