Seeing Portland by Air Photographer Cal Calvert (1875-1930) created an elaborate mockup of an airplane for customers at his studio in Portland, Oregon. In this example of a real photo postcard by Calvert, a man, two women, and three children are pretending to fly over the city of Portland. Mount Hood is visible in the background. The style of Cyko stamp box on the other side dates the card to sometime between 1904 and the 1920s. Banner on the front of the airplane: "The Rose City." Sign on the rudder at the back of the plane: "Seeing Portland." Printed on the other side of the postcard: "Cal Calvert, 10 Minute Postcard Man. City Park Gallery at the Washington St. Entrance, Portland, Oregon. Mazeograph Process." Handwritten note on the other side: "We had this taken for the children's sake. They are in the Catholic School now. Everything was settled May 2nd." #flyinginthestudio #fakeairplane #realphotopostcard #realphotopostcards #rppc #postcard #postcards #foundphoto #foundphotos #foundphotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #vintagephotography #vintage #photography #antiquephoto #antiquephotos #antiquephotography #portland #mounthood #calcalvert #flying #vintagephotocollector #vintagephotocollectors #alanmayscollection #ephemeracollector #ephemeracollectors

Watching from the Window At first glance, this is a typical photo of a woman sitting on a chair. In the background, however, is a girl watching from the window, which seems a little spooky. This is a real photo postcard with a divided back. "R. B. Hunter, LisbellAw" is stamped in ink on the other side, but the card is otherwise unused. Could "LisbellAw" refer to the village of Lisbellaw in Northern Ireland? #realphotopostcard #realphotopostcards #rppc #postcard #postcards #foundphoto #foundphotos #foundphotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #vintagephotography #vintage #photography #antiquephoto #antiquephotos #antiquephotography #watching #watchingfromthewindow #vintagephotocollector #vintagephotocollectors #alanmayscollection #ephemeracollector #ephemeracollectors

Boy with Strunk's Studio Horse, Reading, Pennsylvania On the other side of this real photo postcard is an Azo stamp box (with four corner triangles pointing up) that indicates that the photo may date to sometime between 1904 and 1918. The back of the card also gives its origin: "Strunk's Studio, 750 Penn St., Reading, Pa." At first glance the boy in the photo appears to be posing with a rocking horse, but a closer examination reveals that the horse's legs are attached to a wooden platform. This same toy horse mounted on wheels appears in other real photo postcards and earlier cabinet card photos from Strunk's Studio. #realphotopostcard #realphotopostcards #rppc #postcard #postcards #foundphoto #foundphotos #foundphotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #vintagephotography #vintage #photography #antiquephoto #antiquephotos #antiquephotography #toyhorse #toyhorses #strunk #strunksstudio #vintagephotocollector #vintagephotocollectors #alanmayscollection #ephemeracollector #ephemeracollectors

Midway Diner, July 13, 1950 "Midway Diner, where we ate our dinner. On our trip to Atlantic City. Thursday, July 13, 1950." This was the 1950s -- just barely -- but diners like this have played a significant role in fifties nostalgia. As Wikipedia observes, "In television and cinema (e.g. The Blob, Happy Days, Grease, and Diner), diners and soda fountains have come to symbolize the period of prosperity and optimism in America in the 1950s. They are shown as the place where teenagers meet after school and as an essential part of a date." Based on other photos I purchased along with this one, I believe that the family members who ate their dinner here on July 13 were traveling from their home somewhere in or near Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Atlantic City, New Jersey. This suggests that the Midway Diner was located somewhere in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, but I haven't been able to determine exactly where. #foundphoto #foundphotos #foundphotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #vintagephotography #snapshot #snapshots #vintagesnapshot #vintagesnapshots #vintage #photography #vernacularphoto #vernacularphotos #vernacularphotography #diner #diners #midwaydiner #alanmayscollection #vintagephotocollector #vintagephotocollectors #ephemeracollector #ephemeracollectors

One-Minute Churn, L. H. Chambers, Cumberland, Maryland This photo postcard, captioned "One Minute Churn, L. H. Chambers, Cumberland, Md.," shows Lorenzo Hazell Chambers (1877-1958) standing next to a mechanical butter churn. He has a wide grin on his face, and he's resting his left hand on top of the churn. Perhaps Chambers intended to use this card as an advertisement for selling churns (the One-Minute Churn Company solicited sales agents -- see the company's ad below), even though the photo quality is poor and the image seems quite cloudy. This real photo postcard is unused, without any address, message, stamp, or postmark. The Kruxo stamp box design on the other side suggests a possible date that may be as early as 1908 to 1910. Also printed on the verso: "The C. C. Bickert Post Card Co., Hagerstown, Md." The following advertisement for the patented One-Minute Churn appeared in Hardware magazine, April 10, 1905, p. 11. Butter in One Minute The only perfect milk and cream aerator churn in the world, making the best granular butter from sour or sweet cream in a minute -- which we guarantee -- is the One Minute Churn. Protected by 57 patents. Its construction is perfect in every detail. All parts interchangeable and carried in stock. Easy to run, holding 1 quart to 13 gallons. For farm and family use. Who Was That Masked Man? A photo of three young men goofing around in the backyard. I'm not sure if that's a Halloween mask or whether the fellow in the middle is wearing it voluntarily, but the two other guys appear to be having fun. Foursome Flying over Long Beach, California, 1914 Handwritten caption: "Betty -- J.G.R. -- Louise -- Harry. Venice -- 1914." This is a real photo postcard showing two couples -- Betty and J.G.R. along with Louise and Harry -- pretending to ride in an early biplane. The design of the Noko stamp box on the other side of the card indicates a date range of 1907 to 1929, which corresponds to the handwritten year of 1914 on the front. Although the caption indicates the location as "Venice," the structure pictured below the biplane was the pier in Long Beach -- not Venice -- California. The photo, of course, is a montage composed of a studio photo of the plane and its flyers along with the addition of a separate image of the pier. #realphotopostcard #realphotopostcards #rppc #postcard #postcards #foundphoto #foundphotos #foundphotography #vintagephoto #vintagephotos #vintagephotography #vintage #photography #antiquephoto #antiquephotos #antiquephotography #studiophotography #studiophoto #studioprops #comicforeground #flyinginthestudio #fakeairplane #alanmayscollection #vintagephotocollector #vintagephotocollectors #ephemeracollector #ephemeracollectors

Mennonite Couple Arm in Arm on a Farm A Mennonite couple -- notice the woman's plain dress -- stand arm in arm in front of a picket fence as they pose for this photo, which I purchased in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Boy with a Gun Next to the Chicken Run In this photo, four members of a family are posing in front of a fenced-in area for the chickens. It's a little disconcerting to see that the gun that the boy is holding over his shoulder is pointed directly at the man -- his father? -- standing behind him. The faded quality of the upper portion of the photo makes it difficult to see the faces of the man and two women, giving them an almost ghostly appearance. This is an image from a real photo postcard with no address, message, or stamp on the other side. Three of a Kind Printed on the other side of this real photo postcard: "The Automatic Vaudeville Co., 9 Tremont Row, 634 Washington St., Boston, Mass." The "23" on the one hat is a reference to the "23 skidoo" fad that became popular in the United States beginning around 1906 or 1907. Back then, telling someone "23 skidoo" meant "scram" or "beat it," and using "23" in an unexpected place like this was a way to let others in on the joke. On this day in 1942, Philadelphia Athletics shortstop Al Brancato was sworn into the United States Navy by Lieutenant K. B. Emmons (USNR). Athletics owner and manager, Connie Mack was present with his player whom he referred to as "the Italian boy," during the ceremony, standing in for Brancato's father who passed away in 1939. Due to his experience in running his own Sporting Goods store in Philadelphia, Brancato entered the Navy as a storekeeper second-class petty officer. Uncertainty surrounded the baseball world in the first few weeks of the war. By mid-January, only a handful of major league baseball players volunteered for duty and Brancato's enlistment was the second starting position player for the Athletics to join (Sam Chapman joined the Navy in December). Two days after Brancato joined, President Roosevelt penned his famous "Green Light Letter" giving professional baseball the go-ahead to continue playing for the morale and well-being of the American people during the national crisis. #vintagebaseballphotograph #vintagebaseballphotos #VintagePhotoCollectors #militarybaseball #WWII #BaseballInWartime #wwiinavybaseball #PhiladelphiaAthletics #AlBrancato #WW2Induction #BaseballPlayersIntheNavy #chevronsanddiamonds

Seventy-nine years ago this month, Marine Corps fighter ace, Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington of VMF-214 was shot down and taken captive by Japanese forces. Five days after the engagement and subsequent loss of the commanding officer of the "Blacksheep," the squadron concluded their second combat tour having tallied nearly 100 enemy aerial kills in the Solomon Islands. Just weeks before, the squadron personnel posed wearing their St. Louis Cardinals caps and holding their bats sent by the 1943 National League Champions. One of our most cherished vintage photographs is this wartime USMC public affairs image showing the pilots of the squadron, posed on the wings sporting their caps while the six aces lined up in front holding their Cardinals game-used bats. Scheib is the youngest player in American League history and pitched parts of three seasons from 1943 to 45. Most Americans born before 1970 would easily summarize what took place on December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. The destruction of a significant portion of the Pacific Fleet during the Japanese sneak attack pulled the United States into four years of brutal fighting in Europe, the Mediterranean, Atlantic, North Africa, Asia and the Pacific. How many Americans remember the first U.S. Navy ship lost in open-water ship-to-ship combat? The story of the heavy cruiser USS Houston was largely forgotten. Author James Hornfischer's fantastic book, "Ship of Ghosts" brought the perilous story of the the ship and her crew to the forefront. Nearly 700 of her crew were killed as a result of the ship's sinking on March 1, 1942 but the story of what happened to the survivors was purely brutal. Of the survivors, 368 men were interred in Japanese slave-labor POW camps and nearly 80 of them were starved, beaten and brutalized or murdered. A handful of the men in this 1940-41 USS Houston team photo are identified. Five of the men seen here, Bain, O'Brien, Parker, Stefanek and Wisecup, were taken captive and survived the POW camps. "Ship's baseball team, circa 1940-41, while she was flagship of the Asiatic Fleet. Men identified include (Standing): Parker (2nd from left); Bain (4th from left); Stefanek (6th from left); O'Brien (8th from left); Dingler (4th from right); and Erler (right). (Kneeling): Jarvis (left); Burger (2nd from left) and Hobush (right). (Seated): Wisecup (right)." This type-1 gelatin-silver image is a fantastic and quite historic addition to our vintage baseball photo collection. #WWII #BaseballInWartime #vintagebaseballphotos #vintagebaseballphotograph #USSHouston #VintagePhotoCollectors #JimHornfischer #prisonerofwar #NavyShipBaseballTeam

Eighty years ago, these four former pro ball players were in the midst of Army flight training at the Waco Army Flying School (WAFS). This photo was captured six days before Thanksgiving. All eight men shown also played for the WAFS "Wolves" baseball team capturing the Semi-pro championship in 1943 winning 49 of 65 games. Sid Hudson was a 17-game winner while field general 2nd Lt. Tebbetts caught every game. "November 20, 1942 - Waco, Texas: These eight baseball players, including five major leaguers, are fulfilling their dream of becoming pilots - but in a different game. They are photographed at the Waco, Texas, Army Flying School, where they are training for the Army Air Corps. Top row, left to right are: Private Walter "Hoot" Evers, Detroit Tigers outfield prospect; Private George "Birdie" Tebbetts, Tigers catcher; Private Bruce Campbell, Washington Senators outfielder; and Private Colonel "Buster" Mills, Cleveland Indians outfielder. Bottom row: Private Mickey Mandjack, East Texas League pitcher; Private Mike Popovich, Tigers catching understudy; Private Nick Popovich, Chicago White Sox farm pitcher; and Private Sid Hudson, Washington pitcher." Some photos just speak to us. Though spring training is less than a 1/4-year away, it seems that so much will happen before pitchers and catchers report to the warm climes of Arizona and Florida. Imagine the long, dark winter that troops endured before spring arrived and baseball could be played once the enemy was pushed out of places like Giovanni, Italy. Had this young Italian boy ever heard of the game before these four 15th Air Force men surrounded him with equipment and dressed him with the tools of ignorance. Was he destined to be the next great Italian backstop in the mold of Ernie Lombardi or the young sailor, Lawrence Berra? "April 18, 1944 - Italy: The Baseball Season Has Opened At A 15Th AF Base Near Giovanni, Italy. Four Men Of The 740Th Bomb Squadron, 455Th Bomb Group, Held Their Little Italian 'Bat Boy' Adjust His Equipment. 20 March 1944. Members of a Mediterranean Allied Air Forces bomb group stationed in Southern Italy take time out to give their Italian batboy a few baseball pointers. Left to right: Sgt. Joseph Maccarone, Long Island, N.Y.; Cpl. Maurice Wiles, Nelson, Pa.; Pfc. Leonard Newcomb, Boston; Sgt. Verne Browner, Duluth, MN. Now the gunners, mechanics, and pilots know it's spring." At the age of 36, Yankees catching great Bill Dickey followed many of his former Bronx Bomber teammates into the Armed Forces during WWII. Dickey was given a commission in the U.S. Navy at the rank of lieutenant junior grade and served from 1944-1945. Dickey joined his younger brother George "Skeets" Dickey in Hawaii where he managed the 1944 Navy All-Stars team in the Servicemen's World Series. He assumed duties as the Navy's Athletics and Physical Fitness director on Oahu and was responsible for organizing league play in 1945. Wartime baseball down under saw Navy stars establish and participate in baseball leagues for service personnel including Charlie Wagner, Benny McCoy, Dom DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto. Two scorecards were used for service games including the 1943 U.S. Army League Championship and a 1945 game between a U.S. Navy club and a local Victoria baseball team. With baseball having been played in Australia since the 1850s, the game enjoyed a modicum of popularity on the continent though was not as common as in the States. This photo from our collection depicts the very reason that major and minor league baseball held benefit games or competed against star-studded service teams. Baseball equipment was purchased through fundraising organizations including the Professional Base Ball Fund and Comedian Joe E. Brown's All Pacific Recreational Fund and distributed throughout all combat theaters. This B-17 flight crew plays a form of baseball between missions. This photo is a 9x6 gelatin silver type-1 press photo produced by the Army Signal Corps. "American Bomber Pilots Relax with Baseball Somewhere in Australia. If it is the post season, New York fans all too often have reason to celebrate. In 1943, the Yankees made it to the World Series with the opening game commencing four days after the Cardinals were dispatched on October 11 by the Bronx Bomber's. This isn't The Bronx nor is the above venue Yankee Stadium but the Yankees (of the U.S. Army) faced off in Algiers for the North African World Series. "1943, October 15: A view of the stands in Eugene Stadium, Algiers, during the first game of the North African World Series. The U.S. Army M.P.s played the 'Yankees'; and came our very much second best to the tune of 9-0." "Baseball Follows the Yanks - Even in North Africa the spirit of the World Series blooms. On June 6, 1944, US, British and Candian forces landed on French beaches in Normandy as part of the largest amphibious an airborne assault in history. The day before at Sampson Naval Training Station, the Boston Red Sox were pommelled 20-5 by the Seaman Johnny Vander Meer-led Navy team. This game program was signed by Red Sox manager and Hall of Famer, Joe Cronin. Our silver gelatin type-1 Navy public relations captures the pregame handshake between managers. June 5, 1944 - U.S. Naval Training Center, Sampson, New York: "You really have your men in shape," said Manager Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox to Captain Harry A. Badt, USN, Commandant of this Naval Training Center. 'This Navy League is tough. I hope we do better than we did against Great Lakes.' But they didn't. Sampson's undefeated Bluejackets trounced the Red Sox, 20-7, for their ninth straight. Johnny Vander Meer, right, did the Sampson hurling and coasted to victory behind a 25-hit assault. Great Lakes defeated the Bosox two weeks before, 3-1." #WWIIbaseball #type1vintagephoto #collectingvintagephotography #wwiinavybaseball #vintagebaseballmemorabilia #vintagebaseballphotos #VintagePhotoCollectors #collectingvintagephotos #vintagebaseballphotograph #navybaseball #wwiimilitarybaseball #Baseballinwartime #sampsonnavaltrainingcenter #sampsonnavybase #redsox #bobbydoerr #joecronin #johnnyvandeemeer #Chevronsanddiamonds

While many of the wartime games spotlighted by Chevrons and Diamonds are played in ballparks and feature former major, minor and negro leaguers, semi-pros and collegiate players, ballgames were often players by regular Joes within earshot of the front lines, like this game somewhere in France just weeks before Operation Market Garden commenced. "Infantrymen enjoy a game of baseball in a field 'somewhere in France' during a rest period between action in the front lines. 19 August 1944." When a 104 year old photo of a Navy chief petty officer surfaced, we were surprised to find the sailor was a former major and minor leaguer prompting deep research that lead to an interesting story. While (our) Jack Ryan possessed many skills he is not to be confused with Tom Clancy's character. Being one of two pitchers wanted in exchange for the great Cy Young is certainly a claim to fame, but Ryan was a decent pitcher who saw several outstanding years with the Pacific Coast League's Angels. With few exceptions, all of the photos used on Chevronsanddiamonds.org, Facebook and Instagram are part of our growing vintage photography library. Each photograph that arrives is evaluated, scanned and placed into proper storage for preservation. The captured digital image is painstakingly edited to remove blemishes, damage and to correct exposure to provide an optimal visual to accompany our articles and research. Some photos in our collection were prepared for publishing more than seven decades ago and require significant efforts to bring them up to our standards. This January, 1945 photo of former Dodgers and Cubs outfielder Charlie Gilbert (with bat) and former journeyman catcher Rollie Hemsley) required substantial work to remove the 1945 photo editor's marks. Salvaging a veteran's group of snapshots cut from a wartime photo album, these images capture visuals from the last game of the 1945 Hawaii baseball season as the NAS Kaneohe Bay ball club hosted an extravaganza; Klipper Day. With thousands of GIs in attendance, the Klippers hosted the NAS Honolulu Crossroaders, featuring Johnny Pesky, Dale Jones, Dick West, Dee Miles, and Ned Harris for the game. Captured by a servicemember seated behind the Crossroaders bench, it is fortunate that the images were cut along with their captions preserving the identifications of the players. Along with the photos, we shared the cover from one of our Klipper Day programs/scorecards.
