Our special Malanka guest needs no introduction, but, for those that are new to Victoria let me introduce you to Daniel Lapp. Daniel is a world-renowned singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, teacher, archivist, band leader, sideman, producer, promoter and – no kidding – the list goes on. And like the true-blue Canadian he is, Daniel does it all with trademark energy and warmth. As a fiddler, jazz trumpeter and singer/songwriter, Daniel has played on over 100 albums and has toured across Europe, Australia, China, Israel, the USA and Canada, He has performed on a variety of instruments with many recognizable names such as Spirit of the West, Rickie Lee Jones, 54-40, Gord Downie, Barney Bentall, Jim Byrnes, Jim Cuddy, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Stephen Fearing, Hugh Fraser, Ed Robertson, Danny Michel, Broken Social Scene, Lennie Gallant, Jerry Holland and Roy Forbes. In 2012 Daniel received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee "Service" Award and in 2013 was the recipient of the Canadian Folk Music Association "Innovator" Award for his contribution to Canada's fiddle culture. We are honoured and excited that Daniel is able to join us for Malanka this year. On Saturday, Veselka dancers, families and friends came together at Goldstream Park for some outside fun, a BBQ and a walk through a forest with 600 year old Douglas fir trees and western red cedars. Many of the refugees in our region are unfortunately leaving behind the elderly or younger men who are fighting the invaders. In spite of this, There is much joy, and it was a great opportunity to donate to the various charities set up by our local #ukraine communities to benefit the civilians and military fighters.
