I'm finally back fettling bits of my velomobile. Problem is, it's been so long, I can't really remember where I'd got to. After a long break with kitchen fitting and decorating, and general living, Christmas, new year, then a small distraction with a non human powered vehicle, I finally got back on my lathe yesterday and today to continue where I left off many months ago with the new bearing housings for the redesigned front suspension. I've redesigned the shock actuation to be a push rod instead of a top rocking arms as it was. I pulled my books on car suspension design of the shelf and started reading. Almost the first sentence in the section about push and pull rods said 'push and pull rods have largely superseded rocking arms due to the very high bending loads....' wish I'd read that a couple of years ago, it would have saved the catastrophic failure last May of my rocking arms! I wanted to go with pull rods as it would have been a little lighter and the pull rod can effectively be a piece of string as it's in tension, but I couldn't get it to work without a major carve up. So push rods it is. Again I have had to compromise the design a little to avoid too much of a carve up, so there will be little bit of bending between the two bell cranks. I'm using some beefy needle roller bearings so it should be OK. Today Ryan over from @solmobil drove up all the way from North Carolina to deliver my last remaining Organic Transit ELF “the Great Pumpkin 🎃” from my old ELF collection as I wanted to try and take a crack at trying to restore it once as it serviced my charity @computersfortheautistic very well and made so many people happy that I wanted to try and restore it again with what I have learned from doing e-bike conversions. I was also given one of the projects I started doing when I lived in North Carolina which was the ill famous Sinclair C5 which was one of the first electric bikes ever produced with over 17,000 units being produced in the 80’s. These will be long progress projects for me to do with Alan as I’m wanna be able to afford to get parts from our e-bike conversion we do for them.both to work again. You'll all be pleased to know that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.... just our extension build and kitchen fitting has taken a considerable bit longer than we'd originally hoped or planned. The good news is, it's looking lovely, we have a new, massive kitchen with more cupboard space than we could shake a very large stick at. The kitchen is only a couple of weekends away from being done, but the list of other diy projects keeps growing. After the catastrophic failure of the front suspension back in May, I've not done a lot to the velomobile unfortunately. I've redesigned the front suspension and started making some of the new bits, and managed to weld-up/rebuilding and get galvanised, the chassis of the trailer that I'll use to transport the velomobile to races. But since the end of July, I've been decorating and building the kitchen so I've had no time in the garage at all. This post isn’t really about bikes, it’s about doing something different-like recumbent bikes, but bigger! On Saturday, Australian's are being asked to vote in a referendum to change the Constitution, to provide recognition of our First Nations peoples and to undertake a process to provide them with a Voice to our Parliament so that they may have input into decisions and policy regarding their own people. There is nothing sinister or underhand proposed, there is little detail that can be provided, because, largely, we are voting on a concept. A concept that we finally acknowledge the First Nations peoples constitutionally and that we agree to a process that makes provision for those people to have a voice for their own people and their concerns. That is all it is, there is no other agenda despite the noise and misinformation to suggest otherwise. It is something that will have little affect on the lives of the majority of Australians, but may, be a positive change ongoing for the First Nations people of Australia. It is a generous invitation to all of us and a win- win for all Australians. It is very sad to see the politicisation of this referendum, even sadder to see the tarnishing of Australia if it is rejected.
