Along the Poggiolo road above the town of Badesse, a centuries-old holm oak grows in all the beauty of its broad foliage. The holm oak, in addition to the cork tree, is an evergreen species of the Quercus genus, meaning its foliage does not shed during the winter season of vegetative rest, but if anything the leaves are changed cyclically every 2-3 years. It is a tree species typical of Mediterranean vegetation, in fact its leathery leaves with a layer of waxes allow it to resist periods of drought. Furthermore, in young plants the leaves have a thorny margin to defend themselves from the bite of herbivores. When the traveler finds himself in front of a holm oak with a diameter greater than two meters he must always think of a relevant age because it is a species that grows slowly and the rings between them are very close and not very thick. Its thick dark foliage allows few rays of sunlight to pass through and only shrubs or plants that do not need to be fully exposed to the sun to survive can grow under the holm oaks. Depending on the stress factors, the holm oak can have an arboreal or bushy habit and adapt โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees#

In front of the Pieve di Molli, two specimens of holly root which have a more arboreal appearance... Unusual species in front of a churchyard, but the mind immediately goes to the Christmas holiday. In fact, in addition to mistletoe, more typical of Northern European countries, and spruce, the classic Christmas tree, another species that is used in decorations due to its red fruits that ripen on female plants, is precisely the holly, especially in the form of a garland or crown. Since Celtic times, it was thought to protect against demons and bring good luck due to its red berries representing fertility during the deep darkness of winter, a promise of the return of light and warmth. In the transition between the rites of pagan civilizations and the Christian religion, the celebrations of the Winter Solstice were replaced by Christmas on December 25th and the thorny leaves are associated with the crown of thorns of Jesus, while the red berries recall the his Blood. When found spontaneously in the woods, this species has an importance for biodiversity: its berries are appetizing for birds and it represents a glacial relict of the Tertiary, i.e. a species that was widespread in specific territorial areas in that geological era, yes it then drastically reduced in size having found specific refuge areas. For this reason it can fall within the criterion of botanical rarity, in relation to its potential monumentality, even more so if it is of significant size or particular shape. The fact that in the foliage the leaves with a thorny edge or with more accentuated spines grow especially on the branches of the lower part closest to the ground is a sign that it is a defense mechanism from the bite of herbivores. Its scientific name Ilex aquifolius also bears the mark of this character that distinguishes it: if โ€œilexโ€ refers to the similarity with the leaves of the holm oak, โ€œaquifoliumโ€ to โ€œacusโ€ (needle) โ€œacutusโ€ (acute) and โ€œfoliumโ€ (leaf) #unusualtrees #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualshunters #monumentaltrees# @danielematteucci โœ๐Ÿป

Castello del Bisarno Seeing this photo at first glance, one may recall one of the criteria for including a tree in the list of monumental trees or for being included in particular architectural complexes of historical and cultural importance, such as villas, monasteries, churches, botanical gardens and private historic residences. . The villa in question is the Bisarno Castle, originally owned by the Capponi family whose coat of arms stands out on the gate, then by the botanist explorer Odoardo Beccari. Approaching the tree in question you discover that it has a bark with cork and the leaves, as you can imagine even from afar, are dark and leathery like the evergreen species and it produces some acorns... So you think it could be a cork tree, but a good observer would notice that the edge of the leaf is more wavy and although late in winter it loses almost all the leaves together, more reminiscent of a deciduous oak... How is this possible? Plants, unlike animals, are fertile even between different species and the Quercus genus to which all oaks belong is particularly suitable for generating so-called hybrids, also recognized from a systematic point of view like this specimen of cerrocork tree. The great thing is that no single specimen of cork oak will be the same because it can happen that the expression of the characteristics of the cork oak is sometimes more or less accentuated than those of the oak โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualflorence #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees#

With its large foliage, this black pine grows in the garden of Villa Gamberaia on the hills of Settignano, which probably owes its name to the presence of freshwater prawns that were fished nearby. The main areas of the garden and the ingenious system of water conduits and fountains date back to the seventeenth century. Instead, the predominantly โ€œevergreenโ€ character and the architectural forms of the hedges that we can still observe today date back to around 1925-1935. The black pine of the Villa is the only green element with more sinuous lines that protrudes from the confines of the parterre wall which overlooks the Arno valley and the city of Florence. These green geometries were long cared for by the father of Pietro Porcinai (1910-1986), famous Italian landscape designer, as head gardener, during the ownership of Princess Catherine Jeanne Ghyka. Outside of this garden which no longer has an ornamental function, we find the black pine in the woods, often planted by man to reforest, due to its sun-loving and frugal temperament adaptable to any type of soil. Flowering occurs in spring and, depending on the station, goes from April to June and the cones (strobili) are 5-8 cm long. Very often in the winter period on the branches of pine trees in artificial reforestation you can observe nests of processionary moth, a defoliant moth, whose larvae have stinging hairs. โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees #unusualflorence #unusualtuscany#

When we compare trees to us human beings and think about their beneficial effects, underlining the importance of taking care of them for our well-being, their longevity comes to mind, the difference in life expectancy compared to ours. In fact, under the branches of monumental trees and beyond, generations and generations of human beings have passed and the surrounding landscape has continuously evolved. Specifically, historically, the new generations of various eras have always played around the trunk of the hackberry of San Gimignano which roots in a courtyard that belonged to the Convent of Santa Chiara in the 19th century: in 1897 part of this courtyard of the Principessa Maria nursery school Vittoria, located in the adjacent building which now houses a hostel. Apart from a break in 1934 during the years of Fascism in the 1950s, the nursery school found its premises and its courtyard where there are still games for children today. Now a multifunctional center for the Third Age has been opened in the building next to the hackberry where past generations take care of themselves through the practice of physical activity and socializing. Who knows how much joyful noise of children our hackberry will have fed on...unfortunately, now this specimen has been subjected to a series of treatments and interventions with tie rods to ensure that it does not fall on itself, constituting a danger for different generations who enjoy its shade and contemplation. โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualtuscany #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees #unusualflorence#

Small village near Rapolano Terme, Armaiolo was a lordship of the Berardenghi counts of Asciano until the 14th century, which was replaced by the Sienese Republic. History teaches us that the gunsmiths have always been a tenacious and identitarian people who rejected the power of the invader. In one of its suburbs, Finimondo, in front of an abandoned villa from whose windows you can glimpse grotesques, stands a Ginko biloba plant which turns golden yellow every winter. An arboreal plant of Chinese origin, Ginko biloba is defined as a โ€œliving fossilโ€ because the ancestors of todayโ€™s ginkgo, different from the current ones, appeared on our planet about 245 million years ago, and were thought to be extinct when they became At least two relict stations have been discovered in eastern Chinaโ€™s Zhejiang province. In the eighteenth century it was widely spread in Europe as an ornamental tree due to its shape and characteristic fan-shaped leaves which turn yellow in winter before all falling. There are female plants which then produce fruits with a characteristic acrid odor and male ones which spread pollen via the wind. Like gunsmiths, ginko has enormous resistance and adaptation capabilities: it resists the cold, all kinds of parasites and air pollution. Even, to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima... โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualflorence #unusualaddress#

@caterina_mouji The Crystal Sound Academy a/a 2023/2025 has reached its final form. She has grown and matured, this daughter. Shiny just the way I like it. True, alive and vibrant. More self-confident, free from the fear of having to be as others would like. Challenging because it is dizzying to go all the way to the end, where to get there it is essential to let go of ballast. Bottom and top are, after all, the same thing " to "know" how to hit the crystal bells you need just three days, or even nothing at all. The Academy is not for those who want this. Thank you. Narrow in the plain, between the interport and the Bisenzio, stands the church of San Martino a Gonfienti with its small village, a place full of witnesses of the time. First of all, the archaeological area of โ€‹โ€‹Gonfienti from the Etruscan era emerged in the mid-nineties during the construction of the Interport characterized by residential buildings, center of past commercial exchanges. Closer to our times is the proud downy oak (Quercus pubescens) which overlooks the little-traveled street of Gonfienti. The oak in question roots between the street and the bank of the Bisenzio river, where you would expect more of an English oak. Its scientific name derives from the hair that is present on the underside of the leaf, on the buds and on the young twigs. Its foliage takes on the appearance of a crest due to the pruning of the branches which cascade onto the road, attacked by the oak beetle, a species belonging to a family of insects of the Coleoptera order, which in the larval stage feeds of wood, digging tunnels in the trunk and branches. Cerambycides are protected at European level for their important role in the cycle of organic substance which takes advantage of the state of weakness of the host plant. โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci ๐ŸŒณ #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees#

The two most important and majestic cypresses of Villa Le Corti in San Casciano Val di Pesa, belonging to the Corsini Princes since 1363, are not part, as one might think, of the double row that flanks the main access avenue to the Villa, but rather they are the "vegetable columns" of the gate that allows access to the raised parterre from which the entire estate is dominated. The cypress (scientific name Cupressus sempervirens), native to the eastern Mediterranean, was spread in central Italy by the Etruscan populations and subsequently by the Romans, who cultivated it mainly for ornamental reasons, but also for the quality of its wood and no less as a religious symbol . In the 15th century, the cypress experienced a new phase of widespread diffusion: noble families and large landowners encouraged its diffusion in gardens and on their land properties. In fact, due to its longevity, it was also a useful property limit. In its fastigiate shape, with its dark color and height, it constitutes a true landmark of the Tuscan rural landscape: it is no coincidence that it is found as a sign of roads, crossroads, churches, cemeteries or tabernacles. Its religious symbolism in the Christian world follows the Persian belief, whereby the shape of its hair recalls that of the flame of a living fire, attributing to it the value of the tree of life and eternity. It is no coincidence that the great poet Giosuรจ Carducci defined them in one of his most famous lyrics as "tall and frank". โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees #alberimonumentalitoscana #alberimonumentalifirenze #alberimonumentaliitalia#

The Mexican taxodium (Taxodium mucronatum) from the Botanical Garden of Florence is dated 1884 and comes from a seed donated by the Botanical Garden of Palermo. The yew tree is native to Mexico and southwestern Texas and loses its leaves in autumn in areas where the climate is harsher. It is a species that grows along the banks of rivers, but also near wetlands such as springs or swamps. It is no coincidence that the Aztecs called him ahuehuete, "the elder of the swamp". These trees were used by these people to create artificial islands called chinampas by filling the space between one taxodium and another with earth and then cultivating on them. When this species grows in perpetually flooded places they present pneumatophores, particular structures that are generated in the root system to resist the absence of oxygen which introduce the necessary oxygen through particular openings. The most famous specimen in the world is that of Tule, about 15 km from Oxaca with its circumference of 36 m โœ๐Ÿป Daniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #alberimonumentalifirenze #alberimonumentalitoscana #alberimonumentaliitalia#

Until three years ago, the tallest native tree in Italy was Avez del Prinzep with its 52.15 m height, a silver fir in the municipality of Longarone which was soon hit by a wind storm. Recently in the search for a potential heir who would re-establish this record after the Douglasia del Metato in Vallombrosa, a friar from La Verna called the same technicians who had measured it, to verify the height of some majestic silver firs (Abies alba Mill., 1759) present in the forest behind the Sanctuary. The tree was measured in the valley located a short distance from the Sasso di Frate Lupo of Franciscan memory, at approximately 1100 m above sea level and was found to be 51.85 meters high. Furthermore, the fir tree in question has a remarkable shape. At 33 meters high the trunk divides into two large main branches which in turn, above 45 meters, divide into other tops to form what looks like a large " stork's nest" in the terminal part. This structure together with the color of the bark and the shape of the scales, the direction of development of the pine cones and their falling to the ground whole or crumbling into large scales and the appearance of the needles allows it to be distinguished from the spruce (Picea abies (L. ) H.Karst., 1881). The two species of fir are equally divided in our Alpine arc, in the easternmost areas the red fir prevails, while this decreases in favor of the white as you move eastwards, while only the fir is found spontaneously in the Apennines white โœ๐Ÿป Daniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees #unusualaddress #unusualplace #unusualverna #alberimonumentalitoscana #alberimonumentalifirenze #alberimonumentaliitalia#

Among all the oak species present in Italy, the cork tree is one of the most particular with its characteristic bark from which a woody product different from firewood and construction wood is obtained. This species mainly characterizes the agroforestry landscape of Sardinia, it cannot tolerate large temperature changes and requires a certain humidity. Cork protects the plant from bad weather and possible fires: it has heat and sound insulating properties which are also exploited by man. There are two types of cork: the male one, extracted for the first time (25 -30 years of age), very hard and irregular, the female or gentle one extracted after 43 years from the "demasking", used for the most valuable workmanship In Tuscany it can only be extracted in the period between 15 May - 31 August and for plants that have reached 60 cm in circumference, being careful to take it from a small portion of the stem determined by law. This beautiful specimen is located in the Botanical Garden of Florence, planted in 1805 by Ottaviano Targioni Tozzetti, former director of the Botanical Garden @museostorianaturale @registrodeglialberi โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualflorence #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #monumentaltreesflorence #museostorianaturalefirenze #monumetaltresstuscany #monumetaltreesitaly#

The ancient Egyptians revered Nile water lilies, or lotuses as they are also called. N. caerulea opens its flowers in the morning and sinks them into the water at sunset, while N. lotus flowers at night and closes its flowers in the morning. Remains of both flowers were found in the burial chamber of Ramses II. The Egyptians, who in choosing the symbols used in their hieroglyphics drew on the reality that surrounded them, had represented the water lily in some signs. #unusualplace #unusualgardens #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualtrees#

The gardeners of the Certosa di Maggiano say it is the oldest plant in the Garden, and Tuscany, in its list of 122 monumental trees, had counted a specimen more than 7 m tall. Camellia is an origaria plant of the Asian tropical regions. It has the appearance of an evergreen shrub or small tree, introduced in Italy for the first time in the Royal Palace of Caserta at the end of the 18th century as Camelia japonica and has spread in the gardens of the villas of the pre-Alpine lakes. The Italian homeland par excellence of the Camellia is Lucchesia with Sant'Andera di Compito and its Camelietum which contains about 800 plants of 650 different cultivars. The only type of entirely Italian tea from the raw material to the transformation is produced from the Camellia. Attracted by these plants, she was also a literary character such as the well-known Lady of the camellias who came to life from the fingers of Alexandre Dumas fils, later inspiring with her story another worldwide masterpiece, namely Giuseppe Verdi's Traviata. โœ๐ŸปDaniele Matteucci #unusualaddressbotanicaltheme #unusualmonumentaltrees #unusualmaggiano #unusualsiena#

Parasitism or coexistence? There are various types of relationships between living beings. One of these is parasitism or a relationship in which one organism takes advantage of the other, even causing its death. In this interaction, one organism (parasite) settles on another (host) with the aim of feeding on its resources. The parasite can install itself in its host both externally and internally. In this photo, contrary to what many might imagine, there is an example of adaptation for which the Glicine species with its liana-like habit exploits a natural support, such as a cypress, for the search for the only light resource, useful in natural conditions such as woods with a high coverage of the foliage or a high vertical development of its structure. The two living beings are independent both have their own radical apart but neither of them lives at the expense of the other.
