AMERICA - June 1962 Situated in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, it was considered by most to be escape proof, including among the inmates. In the 1930s, Alcatraz was already a forbidding place, surrounded by the cold, rough waters of the Pacific. The redesign included tougher iron bars, a series of strategically positioned guard towers, and strict rules, including a dozen checks a day of the prisoners. Escape seemed near impossible. Despite the odds, from 1934 until the prison was closed in 1963, 36 men tried 14 separate escapes. Nearly all were caught or didn’t survive the attempt. However the 11th June 1962, is a day that will forever be forged into the crime history books. Three men, Frank Morris and brothers Clarence Anglin and John Anglin, did the unthinkable, they escaped! Their fate… remains a mystery to this day! Or does it! Alcatraz: The Last Escape written by the brother’s Nephew, Ken Widner alongside award-winning author Mike Lynch takes a deep dive into one of America’s greatest mysteries. Through connections to stories, photos, and information unknown outside the family, Ken Widner and Mike Lynch gives us a real look into who were Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin. IMO this is the best book I have read on Alcatraz’s infamous escape. It gave me a look into the beginnings of the three men, the lead up to how they ended up in Alcatraz, their escape and then their life after it. Working through all the conspiracy theories the authors put forward some solid evidence how the three men survived the escape. Complete with family photos, family letters and historical photos of the escape, you don’t have to be a true crime fan to enjoy this one! Thank you to @netgalley and @kenwidner for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review. Alcatraz: The Last Escape is now available in stores. Police in Austin, Texas had no clue as to who was behind a package bomb that killed a homeowner in March 2018. Ten days later, when two more devices exploded in the city, investigators knew they were dealing with a serial bomber. With each new attack, the devices were more sophisticated. But authorities caught a break when bombs found at a FedEx facility could be traced to a suspicious man who dropped them off. In the newest installment of the series from Campside Media, Pegalo Pictures and Sony Music Entertainment, “Witnessed: 19 Days” recounts the hunt for the Austin serial bomber. Host Sean Flynn describes the shoe leather efforts of law enforcement to stop the attacks and discern the motive behind the terror campaign. Tell us YOUR take on this show! AUSTRALIA - 1984 10th November 1984 Laurie Tanner returns home to his family homestead in Bonnie Doon in Country Victoria to find his wife dead on their lounge room couch with her hand wrapped around the barrel of a bolt-action rifle. Leaving behind a 21-month-old son, who was asleep in his cot in the next room. Originally Jennifer Tanner’s death was ruled as a suicide, however so many questions surrounded the case. Firstly how could Jennifer have shot herself twice in the brain, after shooting both her hands first. Which begs the question straight away, was it suicide or murder? The responding police officers, instantly ruled the death as a suicide. So no photographs were taken, no forensic experts were called, the house was not searched and detectives did not initially check the scene. The original inquest that was held in 1985 returned an open finding. The coroner cleared Laurie and his brother rouge cop Denis Tanner of any involvement however he stated he was unable to determine if the wounds were self-inflicted or otherwise. In 1995 Adele Baily was found down a mineshaft, at the back of the Tanner’s property. Two months after Bailey’s body was found, and weeks after detectives had drawn tentative links between the two deaths, the Tanner Family homestead was destroyed by fire. Preventing it from being forensically re-examined. It wasn’t until 1996 that Australian true crime writer Robin Bowles read a newspaper article about the alleged suicide of Jennifer Tanner, that she began her investigative journalism on the case and wrote Blind Justice. This book is a great read, Robin clearly details the facts, clues, witnesses and evidence. She also notes the police bungles when investigating this case, the cover-ups and family conspiracy. A second coronial inquest held into Jennifer’s death in 1998 found that Denis Tanner had in fact shot her, but he has never been charged. Angie Boggs, the first person I remember loving, it’s all here in these pages. I hope I came close to doing you justice. Damn, I miss you. - Ona Gritz The victims, Ray Boggs, Angie Boggs, and Raymond Boggs Jnr, lived in an apartment at 753 Webster Street in San Francisco. At the time of her death, 25 year old Angie was carrying her 30-week-old unborn daughter. They were brutally murdered. Everywhere I Look by Ona Gritz is a memoir, written in the form of a letter to her sister Angie Boggs, more than thirty years after her death. Ona without a doubt is definitely a wordsmith. Everywhere I Look is honest and raw, nevertheless beautifully written.  I loved this book. I loved how honest Ona was with her emotions and how she processed them for more than thirty years through her memories of her childhood, as she uncovered the family secrets while trying to understand why and how her sister’s life was cut short. In 1988, three months after going missing from a lake in San Angelo, Texas, the bodies of teenagers Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly were discovered - the pair had been shot. Among those in their friend group were a collection of self-styled occultists, and evidence of satanic rituals was found near the park where they vanished. Evidence suggested there was more than one killer and rumors of a falling out between the victims and members of the cult interested investigators. Other possibilities included a drug debt, a random robbery, or police perpetrators and a cover-up. Decades after the murders, new clues keep emerging, but detectives seem no closer to solving this cold case. From Texas Monthly True Crime comes “Shane and Sally.” Hosts Rob D’Amico and Karen Jacobs take a fresh look at the prominent unsolved mystery. They track down past suspects and seek a motive for the killing of the teens. Did they really double-cross a drug dealer, provoke a satanic cult, or were they the latest victims of a stick-up gang prowling the lake? Tell us YOUR take on this show! NETFLIX 🎥🍿 Move over Evan Peters as Dahmer, Baby Reindeer and Richard Gadd have just taken over Netflix. WOW! I feel like at times during this drama series I was left speechless. Baby Reindeer is a Netflix drama series that runs over 7 episodes. It is based on British comedian Richard Gadd’s real life experiences of being stalked by a middle-aged woman. Firstly Richard Gadd… definitely went down the wrong career path. His acting skills were AMAZING, as he played Donny, which is fairly much the character based on himself. Now if you weren’t already aware of that, I will give you a moment to let that sink in as you think about Episode Four. And if you have not yet watched Baby Reindeer, then get off your phone and turn Netflix on now! APRIL🍁 The start of April was quiet on the work front for me, so I spent the spare time reading more. I read nine books during the month of April. Dissident Streets, If You Tell, and Tears of the Silenced being among my favourites. I was lucky to be gifted two ARC, The Next Run and True Crime Trivia 3. Reread two books I purchased and read nearly 25 years ago as I was attending a true crime night where the author was the guest speaker. And I succumbed to buying Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s book Released and was pleasantly surprised. Among the missing persons cases online sleuth Todd Matthews followed were that of two boys from the same family who vanished 25 years apart. He was shocked to receive a call from a man who thought he might be Phillip Steven Brandenburg, the baby who went missing in 1974. Todd determined Steve Patterson was indeed the John Doe they’d been searching for and helped him reconnect with the mother he never knew. Sandi Brandenburgh claimed the underground adoption was brokered by her husband. Soon after, Franklin Floyd disappeared with Sandi’s oldest daughter and lived on the run with her for years. Authorities would not tie all these threads together until three more people were dead or missing. From iHeartMedia, Revelations Entertainment, First and Last Productions, and Neon Hum Media, comes "Hello, John Doe." We hear Todd work with Steve to learn more about where he came from, though the answers are discouraging. It also guides listeners through the connections to the Sharon Marshall and Michael Hughes cases and Todd’s efforts to reunite a family torn apart by tragedy. Tell us YOUR take on this show! AMERICA - 2015 to 2023 Ok I succumbed… the temptation was too much! I paid the $11.99 aud to read Gypsy-Rose’s book, Released. I was torn between not wanting to buy it on principle as I think Gypsy learnt the art of manipulation from her mother. But I am intrigued by her story as she is definitely a product of her environment. Gypsy-Rose Blanchard was a victim of long term child abuse at the hands of her own mother who suffered from Munchausen Syndrome. This abuse led Gypsy to have her mother murdered by her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn. Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom by Gypsy-Rose was written alongside Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani. It gives the reader an inside look at her phone conversations with Melissa and Michele during her time inside prison and as she prepared for an early parole. Her e-book was launched a month after her release from prison and is an introduction to her planned full length memoir she wants to release at a later date. This one was an easy and quick read, around 120 pages long. I read it in one sitting and I actually enjoyed it. It flowed well and gave you a look into Gypsy’s thought processes. Are you interested in true crime facts? Test your knowledge of Serial Killers, Unsolved Mysteries, Infamous Crimes, Hoaxes and more with 250 chilling and fascinating quiz questions. I have been trying to think of a different word other than fun to describe a book that would fall under the True Crime Genre. But Michelle Tooker’s third instalment of her True Crime Trivia Series was a fun book to read. 250 multiple choice or true/false questions are spread over five different topics, in an interactive format allowing you to read the questions and guess your answers without being able to see the correct answer until you read the answers section of the book. However if read on a kindle you can easily choose to jump back and forth between the questions and answers at the end of each question. The answer section not only provides the answers to each question but gives the reader interesting details about each crime.  The thing I love most about this book, besides the fact I read about a lot of cases I have never heard of before (considering how much true crime content I read) is that it can be a tool to host a Trivia Night at home with family and friends. It would also make a great gift for that True Crime Buff you have been trying to think of what to buy! Thank you @true.crime.trivia for my ARC in return for my honest review. VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA - 1984 to 1999 Just finished re-reading the second instalment of the Street by Lachlan McCulloch in time for a true crime event I am attending this Saturday night where he is the guest speaker. Lachlan wrote these books not long after he resigned from the police force, and at a time where true crime books written by the source were not exactly humble so to speak. However, in saying that, The Street alongside The Street 2 does give the reader a glimpse inside the police station walls, in an era where it wasn’t unusual for an officer to use a telephone book…. With the nation already on edge after 9/11, envelopes containing deadly anthrax were mailed to journalists and politicians. It killed five postal workers and reporters, and sickened Congressional staffers. Government officials claimed these attacks originated overseas, and used the threat as justification for the invasion of Iraq. The FBI relied on leading experts to decipher the anthrax, and traced the weaponized strain to a particular beaker in a US biolab. VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA - 1984 to 1999 I think that heroin traffickers are one of the worst and lowest form of criminal filth. They actively go out and destroy lives and kill people - kill people quickly by deliberately overdosing them and kill people slowly by addicting them. And they just do it for profit, pure greed. - Lachlan McCulloch The Street by Lachlan McCulloch is a collection of police tales from a police career that spanned two decades. I first read Lachlan’s books over 20 years ago and enjoyed them then as I did rereading them. I dusted them off to reread as I am attending an event this Saturday night where he is the guest speaker, talking about his life inside the police force. If you enjoy listening to the stories about crime from the blue line point of view then this one you will enjoy! VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA Eugene Donnin spent the early part of his life as a member of one of Australia’s most colourful and notorious street gangs, The Collingwood Boys. The streets were his parents. Dissident Streets is where fact meets fiction. Eugene, a natural storyteller used his life experiences to create these thought provoking short stories. I love Eugene’s writing style and when I finished this collection of short stories, I wish there were more! And I have my fingers crossed he will one day write a memoir. 🤞🏻 QOTD: What are you thankful for today? #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict

The 2012 murders of 20 school children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary shocked the nation and shattered their grieving families. But InfoWars host Alex Jones immediately unspooled a series of conspiracy theories accusing the parents of faking their kids’ deaths in an elaborate hoax. For years, the families were harassed by conspiracy theorists and routinely slandered by Jones. Fed up, a group of parents sued the host for libel and asked courts in Texas and Connecticut to hold him accountable in the biggest defamation case in US history. The HBO Original documentary “The Truth vs. Alex Jones” goes behind the scenes of the billion-dollar-plus lawsuit. It also digs into the origins of Jones’s unrepentant personna and his scandal-driven business model, as well as the worldview of the followers he inspired to torment the victims’ loved ones. AMERICA - 1995 to 2003 I loved my mother because I didn’t know I had a choice. I had to love her. - Nikki Knotek Michelle Knotek is an American convicted murderer from Raymond, Washington. She was convicted in 2004 of second degree murder and first degree manslaughter for her role in the torture and deaths of Kathy Loreno and Ronald Woodworth, who were both boarders in Knotek’s home. However Michelle’s need to cause intense suffering was not limited to just her boarders. Nikki, Sami and Tori, her three biological daughters were also victims of Michelle’s endless torture. Where the girls thought at times, the only way out was to take their own lives. If You Tell by Gregg Olsen pulls no punches. It is raw, confronting, heart-rending, disturbing, gut-wrenching, traumatic. The emotions are endless after reading two books in a row this week about child abuse. Without a doubt this book is well researched and you can tell it was pulled together from a large volume of interviews from the people involved, including Michelle Knotek’s husband at the time, David. I highly recommend this book, but maybe directly at the true crime fans, as the child abuse and torture can be very challenging for some to read. A year later, 38-year-old Kristina Carrillo went missing from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. But as host Connie Walker investigates her disappearance, she uncovers an unlikely connection between the two cases. In the final season of “Stolen: Trouble in Sweetwater,” Walker looks at two missing persons cases from the largest Indian reservation in the US and their potential link. NETFLIX 🎥🍿 Lover, Stalker, Killer is a 1 hour and 30 minute true crime documentary on Netflix. It tells the story of a mechanic who tries online dating for the first time and meets a woman who takes romantic obsession to a deadly extreme. I don’t want to give any spoilers away to this documentary, so all I am going to say is, THIS IS A MUST WATCH! Without a doubt this is the best stalker documentary Netflix has produced. AMERICA / MEXICO - 1960s I chose to become a doctor. Even though I was born to be a smuggler. - Tom Jenkins Firstly for reasons I can’t explain I always have higher expectations on a book when it is around 600 plus pages long. I feel there is a knack to writing something that long without losing the reader half way through. The Next Run by Tom Jenkins did not disappoint. What made Tom Jenkins a highly intelligent UC Berkeley student drop out of school and pursue the life of a pot smuggler? Was it for the money, was it for the thrill or was Tom Jenkins seeking some kind of recognition from his peers that he is more than just another UC Berkeley student. Did smuggling pot into the country via Mexico give him some kind of celebrity status? Most stories on smuggling start at the end with all the cash and high life living, but Tom gives the reader a look into what life is really like each step of the way from one run to the next. There were times I wanted to reach into the book and shake Tom, all the red flags and close calls of being caught had me on the edge of my seat so to speak. It was inevitable he would end up in jail….. however you will find yourself surprisingly rooting for Tom in the end. Does the next run get him caught and he does his time? Or does Tom walk away into the sunset, start a new life, looking back on his life as just one giant adventure? Well you will have to read the book to find out! Thank you @bookpublicityservices and @authortomjenkins for my ARC in return for an honest review. The Next Run by Tom Jenkins is a true crime memoir about drug smuggling (however you do not need to be a true crime fan to like this one) hitting the shelves on 20th April 2024 #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict

To engage his sociology students, Elizabethton High School teacher Alex Campbell created a unique lesson plan. The class would research a 1970s cold case known as the Redhead Murders. By semester's end, the students had created a profile of the possible serial killer. Six months after the students released their findings, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified someone who fit their profile. They said DNA linked a now-deceased truck driver to one of the half-dozen murders. But with links to the other victims still missing, a new group of Mr. Campbell’s students pick up the trail to solve the case once and for all. From iHeart True Crime and KT Studios, “Murder 101” traces how a group project turned into a potential break in a 40-year-old mystery. The podcast brings us into the classroom discussions on possible clues and an interview with the one person who might tie the crimes of Jerry Leon Johns together: his one surviving victim. Imogene Scott finds herself aboard a luxury cruise ship chartered by the Collier family. The guest list includes powerful friends, as well as Chinese investors interested in acquiring their clothing factory. But after setting sail, an obnoxious passenger is killed with a harpoon through his chest. Also on board is a figure from Imogene’s childhood: world famous detective Rufus Cotesworth, who tried to solve her mother’s car bombing but abruptly dropped the case. The murdered passenger was actually Rufus’s undercover partner, looking for connections between the Colliers and the enigmatic Viktor Sams. Though she despises him, Imogene agrees to help Rufus investigate when she learns Sams was somehow tied to her mother’s death. Hulu’s high seas whodunnit “Death and Other Details” stars Violett Beane and Mandy Patinkin. The stylized drama takes the locked room murder format and sets it afloat. Can the pair learn what Danny uncovered that got him killed? Why is Viktor Sams targeting the passengers ? And will Imogene discover who was responsible for her mother’s death all those years ago. March! I spent the start of March heading down memory lane by reading some of my childhood favourites by Enid Blyton, because you are never too old! I absolutely loved and still do, reading about the adventures to be had in the lands at the top of the Faraway Tree. Enid Blyton had an amazing imagination. I also reread Murder on Easey Street by Helen Thomas to coincide with the release of Casefile’s The Easey Street Murders Podcast. This case is one that stems from my love of true crime. COLLINGWOOD, AUSTRALIA 1977 To coincide with the release of Casefile’s The Easey Street Murders Podcast, I reread slash read the updated version of Murder on Easey Street by Helen Thomas. On a quiet night in January, long-time friends Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett were brutally stabbed to death in their rented house in Collingwood, an inner-city suburb of Melbourne. Suzanne’s 16 month son was in his cot, just metres away from the frenzied attack. Shedding new light on this 46 year old unsolved case, Helen Thomas after extensive research tries to find answers to how someone got away with a double murder. Is there such a thing as A Perfect Crime, or do some homicides go unsolved because mistakes were made from the get go by law enforcement? For an extensive look inside what possibly now haunts the walls of 147 Easey Street, Collingwood, you can’t go past Helen Thomas work on the case. I recommend both this book and the Casefile Podcast she hosts, The Easey Street Murders. #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict #easeystreet #easeystreetmurders #helenthomas #unsolvedmurders

After profiling lawyer Shane Correia years ago for her podcast, part of his story stuck with host Amory Sivertson. He grew up under the cloud that his sister Sophia had been arrested for murdering her mother-in-law. And it was his brother Sean who said he witnessed Sophia commit the crime. But something about the story bothered Sivertson. Did the six-month pregnant 23-year-old really beat Marlyne Johnson with fireplace tongs just to steal some money? Why does the blood evidence only point to Sean, who was given a deal to testify against his sister? But her own investigation takes several turns, and Sivertson wonders if she’ll ever know who’s telling the truth. In “Beyond All Repair” from WBUR, Sivertson offers up a classic murder mystery with an enthralling cast of characters. She brings a vibrant narrative style and leaves no stone unturned in her quest to find out who killed Marlyne . Tell us YOUR take on this show! Link in the bio ☝ Subscribe/follow. Listen. Share. NEW BOOK ADDED TO THE COLLECTION 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 The best kind of surprise is when my husband comes home from work bearing gifts from the bookstore he popped into while on his lunch break! THE BALLROOM MURDER SYNOPSIS In August, 1925, Audrey Jacob shot dead her former finance, Cyril Gidley, in full view of hundreds of guests at a charity ball in Perth’s Government House. When Audrey was arrested, she still held the gun in her hand. It was an open and shut case of wilful murder - that is, until lawyer Arthur Haynes took the case with a unique defence. His ability to play both the press and the jury for sympathy led to one of the most extraordinary outcomes the judiciary system has ever seen. #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict

NEW BOOK ADDED TO THE COLLECTION 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 The best kind of surprise is when my husband comes home from work bearing gifts from the bookstore he popped into while on his lunch break! THE SATIN MAN SYNOPSIS On Australia Day 1966, the Beaumont children - Jane, Arnna and Grant - disappeared from an Adelaide beach. Despite a large-scale police investigation and extensive media coverage, the case remains unsolved, bogged down by false leads and dead ends, and the Beaumont children were never seen again. In 2006, author Alan Whiticker, assisted by researcher Stuart Mullins, wrote the definitive account of the sibling’s disappearance in Searching for the Beaumont Children. Since the publication of that book, fresh leads have been sceptically received, until one family in particular presented a remarkable possibility - that their family patriarch, a man with a peculiar predilection for satin, might have been involved. This book, The Satin Man, is the result of the ten years that followed, in which Whiticket and Mullins continued their hunt for the truth. It details everything uncovered about the new potential suspect, a man of wealth and position, and sheds incredible new light on this decades-old mystery with vital additional information on the unsolved case. This fully revised and updated edition of the bestselling book brings the still unsolved case full circle. #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict

When Guangcheng escaped house arrest and fled to the US in 2012, he was held up as a symbol of freedom and democracy. But in the subsequent years, observers were puzzled when Guangcheng re-entered the public sphere as a Trump supporter, repeating right-wing talking points. And the humble dissident who stood up to China’s authoritarian government was spotted in Washington on January 6th. The podcast “Dissident at the Doorstep” from Crooked Media looks at Guangcheng’s story, tracing his early advocacy for reproductive freedoms and disability rights, to the diplomatic crisis caused by his flight from captivity, and his latter day emergence as a right wing darling. Hosts Alison Klayman, Colin Jones, and Yangyang Cheng ask if the man known as “the barefoot lawyer” changed his political stripes…or was he misunderstood from the beginning? PRIME VIDEO 🎥🍿 On October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of more than 20,000 concertgoers from his hotel room at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. In a matter of minutes, Paddock killed 58 people and wounded more than 400. It was the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States. Yet, just a couple of years later, Vegas seems to have forgotten it completely. Money Machine is a 1 hour and 25 minute documentary on Prime Video, highlighting the aftermath of the 2017 mass shooting that took place in Las Vegas. I am not a hundred percent sure what I expected from this documentary, but I was hoping to get a greater insight into Stephen Paddock. Without the interviews with his brother, this may not have been covered throughout this program. It mainly focuses on how a mass shooting is not good for business and that Las Vegas is nothing but a Money Machine that will do anything to keep the wheels turning so to speak. Every year, millions of people lose billions of dollars in Vegas and the mass shooting that took place put this billion dollar business at risk. The interviews with the victims were powerful. However I felt their interviews were cut and pasted to suit the narrative of the documentary. And what I found most perplexing is how the director and producer acted like they had lifted the lid on how all Vegas cares about is making money…. with people’s lives and livelihoods last. It is a city based on gambling, that was once run by the mob… If this topic interests you, then the documentary is worth watching. Otherwise IMO give it a miss. #truecrime #truecrimejunkie #truecrimeobsessed #truecrimefan #truecrimes #truecrimelover #truecrimecommunity #truecrimeaddict #truecrimebooks #truecrimestories #truecrimeallthetime #truecrimebook #truecrimereviews #truecrimebookreviews #nonfiction #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookaholic #readingaddict #vegasstrong

“Twin Peaks” actor Kyle MacLachlan had a crazy story for his friend. In the 1980s, kingpin Pablo Escobar bribed an entire North Carolina town to let him land airplanes and smuggle cocaine into the US. The little-known story happened in Varnamtown, population 300. They found that residents, many with the last name of Varnam, got rich as a cog in the cartel's trafficking operation. But one fisherman who refused to be intimidated took on the town in a quixotic effort to stop the smuggling. It took a spate of bad luck and double crosses to bring the whole thing down. In the podcast “Varnamtown,” MacLachlan and war correspondent Joshua Davis revisit this drug war footnote in a tale that features REO Speedwagon, lawn mowing Playboy bunnies, and an attack turkey. We hear from residents, investigators and drug smugglers while the actor and the journalist banter with each other about the story’s quirky twists and turns. Tell us YOUR take on this show! Concerned by her adolescent behavior, Katherine Daniel’s parents sent the teenager to the Academy at Ivy Ridge, a school that promised to set her straight through a rigorous program. But within its walls, Ivy Ridge’s students were subjected to humiliation and violence at the hands of its staff. Years later, Katherine and her former classmates returned to the now-closed school. Riffling through its abandoned files and surveillance tape, they put together the pieces of their traumatic experiences, hoping to prove to an unconvinced world they were abused by so-called educators more interested in collecting tuition than in their well being. The Netflix documentary series “The Program: Cons, Cults and Kidnapping” is a unique view of the troubled teen industry told through the eyes of a former student. Katherine Kubler retraces the academy’s history while confronting former workers and pursuing current owners. She also attempts to come to terms with her own experience at the school and her strained relationship with the parent who put her there. Tell us YOUR take on this show! Journalist Jess Shane had become disillusioned with the documentary industry and its effects on people profiled. She set off to create a new paradigm and craft stories with input from the people whose lives she’s covering. Shane reveals her process of creating a new kind of storytelling, featuring four people who’ll receive compensation and editorial input. But after months of collaboration, the subjects are unable to offer meaningful contributions to Shane’s presentation of their life stories. And the documentarian must confront what happens when subjects want more of the control she offered. From PRX’s Radiotopia Presents comes “Shocking, Heartbreaking, Transformative.” Shane lets listeners into her earnest project to create stories that do right by their subjects, only to learn what is lost by doing so. It also asks questions about the commoditization of nonfiction programs by the companies that supply them and the audiences that demand them. Tell us YOUR take on this show!
