Writing systems, in their design and aesthetics, are fascinating to me, so I’ve found it interesting to imagine what forms a writing system designed specifically for Yoruba would look like—being that it was a solely oral language, or group of dialects, till it was first supposedly written in Ajami scripts and then in its own variant of the Latin script. The idea that almost everything around us (objects, systems, processes), except those made by nature, is purposefully created by people with the desire to see a slight, immense, positive or negative change in the world is one that came up in my head at several points while thinking about this. For instance, in 1443 CE, King Sejong the Great created the Korean Hangul script, which is still in use today, in an attempt to increase literacy among his people. Another instance to consider, the creation of the Bamum scripts, credited to King Ibrahim Njoya of the Kingdom of Bamum (now western Cameroon), a series of scripts that evolved in seven phases, A-G, which fell out of use following the King’s exile in 1931. In these two instances, we see examples of active, conscious efforts to create writing systems, rather than naturally evolving processes. Now, while the utility and widespread use of the Latin script in today’s world arguably erases the practical need for any Yoruba writing system, creating one for the sake of art is an idea I’ve not been able to get away from. After some research and several experiments, I figured a syllabic logography would be best suited. The Chinese Hanzi script and how it is designed for a tonal language piqued my interest, as well as the theorised evolution from the oracle bone etchings to modern Chinese characters. This made me think of the Yoruba facial marking system, which communicated origin and heritage when it wasn’t being used for beautification. It can be said that these markings, not quite pictographs, are symbols used to communicate ideas similar to the way written words are used. What I’ve ended up with is very different from the mostly straight-line structure of the facial markings, but the system remains a consideration in the development of every new character.

This just about sums up our Winter Forest Day. 🥰❄️🍁 Including a hike, poetry tea time, hymns, memory verses, read alouds, STEM, Art, and Geography immersed in the wonders of nature - we got to enhance life skills and risk taking as we had fun with words with W. Like wisdom, weather, winter, water wheels, weasels, and Winnie the Pooh who’s history is inspired by the real wartime bear Winnie, from Winnipeg, Canada who then became friends with the real Christopher Robin and became the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s books. Canada has the wonderful waterfall which led us to explore concepts of hydro energy while creating our own waterwheels and testing them in the delightfully full and rushing creek all around us. Canada is part of the arctic circle with plenty of snow, and while the snow caps around us here have all but melted, we explored different animal tracks and our own tracks in our faux snow and got to create some of our own snowstorms in a jar. But since we were at it we learned about what really made those water and oil molecules in the jar show us such a good time. Take home explorations were snow anatomy diagrams with formation of snow diagrams. I usually have more planned than we get to but we surely fit in some rope swing time, and that helped some of us conquer some inhibitions with proper risk assessment. Thanks for reading this far. I find it exciting when you go to an exhibition and could add something from your collection, a special kind of dialogue, so to speak... here a drawing by #TheophileAlexandreSteinlen, “Masseida assise”, dessin au fusain et à l’estompe (pic 1, 2, 3). @MuseeDeMontmartre is showing a small but fine retrospective on the centenary of #Steinlen s death. #Masseida plays a major role in the exhibition, a young woman of Bambara ethnicity who is well known in art circles. Félix Vallotton depicted her in 1911 as Négresse drapée de rouge (showing her facial scarifications obviously being #tribalmarks). #ThéophileAlexandreSteinlen took her into his home after his partner’s death (see the whole story on Pic 3/4) and she played an important role in his life in the future. She remained not only the black model (see the 2019 exhibition catalog for Le modèle noir de Géricault à Matisse, Musee d’Orsay, Flammarion) as particularly beautiful examples in the exhibition show (Pic 6/7), but also became part of his life and ultimately inherited a considerable part of his estate. In addition to the topic of the #LeModeleNoir , what I find interesting about my drawing sketch is that the scars no longer appear in the picture, but the person Masseïda is shown in his apparent exhaustion with human dignity and can therefore be interpreted as an expression of a deep connection between the two. It seems that her origin and thus her tribal marks no longer play a role for him. I would therefore date it significantly later than 1911.
