The Vedic perspective explains that within every living body there is a soul. Not only is there a soul, but there is the Supersoul. Now, the soul means yourself and myself. We are all individual souls. But the Supersoul means that God is actually present within the heart of all living beings. Like in most religions they say, “God is in the heart.” So, the Vedic perspective says, “It is not good to undergo severe fasting.” Because, if one undergoes severe fasting, and in that way torments one's body, one is tormenting the Supersoul who’s living within the body. So he made his point very strongly - the best intelligence is to serve the spiritual master and by doing so all perfections in life can be attained. So Srila Prabhupada became convinced at that time.
